Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sea and the Jungle Though it is easier, and perhaps far better, not to begin at all, yet if a beginning is made it is there that most care is needed. Everything is inherent in the genesis. So I have to record the simple genesis of this affair as a winter morning after rain. There was more rain to come. The sky was waterlogged and the grey ceiling, overstrained, had sagged and dropped to the level of the chimneys. If one of them had pierced it The danger was imminent. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mowgli movie fans will fall in love with this beautifully illustrated classic! Since its inception in 1894, The Jungle Book has enchanted readers—both young and old—with its invaluable moral lessons. By bestowing the animals in the stories with human traits, famed writer Rudyard Kipling gives readers timeless parables that teach family values and the importance of community. The most popular of these tales center on Mowgli, a young boy who lives in the jungle amongst a community of animals. All before reaching his teenage years, he is brought up by wolves, trained by a bear, kidnapped by monkeys, and much more. This collection also features other classic stories, most notably “Rikki Tikki Tavi,” a story of a young mongoose named Rikki, who serves as a protector from dangerous cobras for a British family residing in India. In this masterful tale, the young mongoose is forced into a ferocious battle with Nagaina, a large venomous cobra threatening Rikki’s family and seeking revenge for the death of her counterpart, Nag. These stories, with their vibrant characters and important moral lessons, have stood the test of time, having been reprinted in hundreds of different versions and languages around the world. Between the First and Second Jungle Books, this volume contains every single original Mowgli story. Featuring stunning, all-new illustrations by renowned artist Ángel Domínguez, this version of Kipling’s masterpiece is a beautiful edition sure to continue to educate and inspire readers for decades to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the collection of Rudyard Kipling short stories known as The Jungle Book. The most famous of these are about Mowgli the wolf boy, and have been adapted for comics, stage, film and television many times. Mowgli's adventures in the forest and battles with the tiger Shere Khan are exciting and should be a part of any child's reading material. The other stories are shorter, but just as entertaining. Rikki-tikki-tavi, about a brave mongoose and his battle against snakes, is a particular favourite of many and The White Seal and Toomi of the Elephants are well loved and enjoyable too. After each story comes a poem or song about the same topic. These are highly moral stories, which have lead some to conclude that they were based on current events of the times, but there is no evidence of that from the author himself and they were probably written for his daughter. Rudyard Kipling knew a great deal about the animals of which he wrote and this comes through in the details of their lives in these tales. This book thoroughly deserves the devotion it receives from its fans. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In an infantry regiment, grilling on the plains of India, and working for my daily bread, Algy has run out for one cold weather, merely in search of variety and amusement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Treasure Hunters: A Story of Tropical Seas As a mere child I must have knocked around quite a bit, for 1 was born near Suva, in the Fiji Islands, and when things went all wrong there with the planting. And my dear old dad thought it necessary to shift camp, we came to Australia. There for several years we followed the usual nomadic life that most families live whose head has got to pick up a living somehow. It is unlikely that my father would have minded these vicissitudes of fortune much, had it not been for my mother, myself - the eldest of the family and my two sisters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rover Boys on Land and Sea: Or the Crusoes of Seven Islands MY dear Boys: The Rover Boys on Land and Sea, is a complete story in itself, but forms the seventh volume of the Rover Boys Series for Young Americans. As I mentioned in a previous volume of this series, when I began this set of books I had in mind to write no more than three volumes, te lating the adventures of Dick, Tom, and Sam Rover, at home, at school, and elsewhere. But the publication of The Rover Boys at School, The Rover Boys on the Ocean, and The Rover Boys in the Jungle, immediately called for more stories of the same sort, so year after year I have followed With The Rover Boys out West, The Rover Boys on the Great Lakes, The Rover Boys in the Mountains, and now the volume before you, which relates the adventures O'f the three brothers, and some of their friends and enemies, on the sea and on a number of far away islands, where, for a time, all lead a sort of Robinson Crusoe life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Years in the Jungle: The Experiences of a Hunter and Naturalist in India, Ceylon, the Malay Peninsula and Borneo As a matter of simple justice to myself, I must inform the reader that the journey of which this book is a record was one of action rather than observation, and opportunities for study were few and far between. Owing to the circumstances under which the trip was carried out, all my waking hours were occupied in a ceaseless warfare for specimens, and my only regret comes when I think what "it might have been," for me at least, had I not been obliged to shoot, preserve, care for and pack up nearly every specimen with my own hands. From first to last I had no other assistance than such as could be rendered by ignorant and maladroit native servants. Even in the preparation of these pages the demon of Work has still pursued me, and the task has been accomplished only by the aid of "midnight oil," when wearied by the labors of the day. What follows is offered merely as a faithful pen-picture of what may be seen and done by almost any healthy young man in two year 9 of ups and downs in the East Indies. He, at least, who loves the green woods and rippling waters, and has felt the mystic spell of life in "a vast wilderness," will appreciate the record of my experiences. I love nature and all her works, but one day in an East Indian jungle, among strange men and beasts, is worth more to me than a year among dry and musty "study specimens." The green forest, the any mountain, the plain, the river, and the sea-shore are to me a perpetual delight, and the pursuit, for a good purpose, of the living creatures that inhabit them adds an element of buoyant excitement to the enjoyment of natural scenery, which at best can be but feebly portrayed in words.
