Book excerpt: "To the economist and ballet enthusiast John Maynard Keynes he was potentially the most brilliant man he'd ever met; to Dame Ninette de Valois he was the greatest ballet conductor and advisor this country has ever had; to the composer Denis ApIvor he was the greatest, mostr lovable, and most entertaining personality of the musical world; whilst to the dance critic Clement Crisp he was quite simply a musician of genius. Yet sixty years after his ... death Constant Lambert is little known today. As a composer he is remembered for his jazz-inspired The Rio Grande but little more, and for a man who ... devoted the graeter part of his life to the establishment of English ballet his work is largely unrecognized today. [This book] looks not only at his music but at his journalism, his talks for the BBC, his championing of jazz (in particular, Duke Ellington), and, more privately - his longstanding affair with Margot Fonteyn. ..."--Book jacket.

Book Synopsis The Lives of Sumerian Sculpture by : Jean M. Evans
Download or read book The Lives of Sumerian Sculpture written by Jean M. Evans and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-08 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the sculptures created during the Early Dynastic period (2900-2350 BC) of Sumer, a region corresponding to present-day southern Iraq. Featured almost exclusively in temple complexes, some 550 Early Dynastic stone statues of human figures carved in an abstract style have survived. Chronicling the intellectual history of ancient Near Eastern art history and archaeology at the intersection of sculpture and aesthetics, this book argues that the early modern reception of Sumer still influences ideas about these sculptures. Engaging also with the archaeology of the Early Dynastic temple, the book ultimately considers what a stone statue of a human figure has signified, both in modern times and in antiquity.

Book Synopsis The Sculpture of Gertrude Hermes by : Jane Hill
Download or read book The Sculpture of Gertrude Hermes written by Jane Hill and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2011 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A graduate of Leon Underwood's Brook Green School of Art in London, Gertrude Hermes (1901-83) trained as a painter and sculptor. Hermes and her husband, Blair Hughes-Stanton, who she met at Brook Green, went on to become leading lights in the early twentieth-century's wood-engraving revival. Although their marriage was short-lived, their exuberant visual inventions for Bunyan;s 'The Pilgrim's Progress' and T.E. Lawrence's 'Seven Pillars of Wisdom' Brought them critical acclaim. Much has been written about Hermes' career as a wood engraver. In contrast, her contribution as a sculptor has been somewhat eclipsed--until now. 'The Sculpture of Gertrude Hermes' presents for the first time a full analysis of the artist's entire sculptural oeuvre. Along with a comprehensive catalogue of Hermes' sculpture, Jane Hill provides a full account of the artist's life in the context of her career as a sculptor. What results is a picture of a pioneering spirit who created busts and heads, functional designs, decorative work and reliefs that are dynamic and unpredictable. Featuring over 140 images, 'The Sculpture of Gertrude Hermes' is a groundbreaking study of an artist so long associated with one art form. This book redresses the imbalance and creates a new and fresh perspective on an important female artist of the twentieth century."--Publisher's website.
Book Synopsis Designing Liners by : Anne Wealleans
Download or read book Designing Liners written by Anne Wealleans and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-09-27 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This in-depth history of the interior design of ocean liners surveys the transient history of interior design in relation to the development of passenger shipping, from commissioning by the line owners, methods and sources for the original creation of designs through to its construction, use and influence. It is a short-lived branch of architecture and design, lasting an average of fifteen years. As the design and taste mirrors and reinforces cultural assumptions about national identity, gender, class and race, not only did the interiors of ocean going liners reflect the changing hierarchies of society and shifting patterns in globalization, but the glamour and styling of the liners were reflected back into the design of interiors on land. Combining design history, architecture history, material and visual cultures, Designing Liners is a richly multidisciplinary work for those studying or researching this application of interior design.
Download or read book Designing Liners written by Anne Massey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-29 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designing Liners: A History of Interior Design Afloat covers the interior design of these floating palaces from the mid-nineteenth century to the twenty-first century. In this new edition, the design heritage of the ocean liner is also explored in this age of a growing holiday cruise market. The book offers the first history and analysis of this highly significant aspect of the design of interiors, which mirrors and reinforces cultural assumptions about national identity, gender, class, and ethnicity. The interiors of ocean liners reflect the changing hierarchies of society and shifting patterns of globalization. The trajectory of the professionalization of interior design is the connecting narrative of the book, from the local decorating firm to the internationally renowned architect. It is an important addition to interior design research and takes this transitory building type as its subject. This book provides the first survey of the transient history of interior design in relation to the development of passenger shipping. The history of these great ship interiors is tracked, from their commissioning by the line owners; the materials, methods, and sources for the initial creation; their construction; their use; and their reception. The demise and re-purposing of the interiors is also covered in this new edition, with additional material on the South African Union Castle and P & O Lines. Drawing on a broad range of original research, Anne Massey’s approach combines interior design studies, design history, architectural history, and maritime studies. The new edition has been carefully designed to include black and white and colour illustrations.
Book Synopsis Modernism and Modernity in British Women’s Magazines by : Alice Wood
Download or read book Modernism and Modernity in British Women’s Magazines written by Alice Wood and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-12 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores responses to the strangeness and pleasures of modernism and modernity in four commercial British women’s magazines of the interwar period. Through extensive study of interwar Vogue (UK), Eve, Good Housekeeping (UK), and Harper’s Bazaar (UK), Wood uncovers how modernism was received and disseminated by these fashion and domestic periodicals and recovers experimental journalism and fiction within them by an array of canonical and marginalized writers, including Storm Jameson, Rose Macaulay, Gertrude Stein, and Virginia Woolf. The book’s analysis is attentive to text and image and to interactions between editorial, feature, and advertising material. Its detailed survey of these largely neglected magazines reveals how they situated radical aesthetics in relation to modernity’s broader new challenges, diversions, and opportunities for women, and how they approached high modernist art and literature through discourses of fashion and celebrity. Modernism and Modernity in British Women’s Magazines extends recent research into modernism’s circulation through diverse markets and publication outlets and adds to the substantial body of scholarship concerned with the relationship between modernism and popular culture. It demonstrates that commercial women’s magazines subversively disrupted and sustained contemporary hierarchies of high and low culture as well as actively participating in the construction of modernism’s public profile.

Book Synopsis George Lambert, 1873-1930 by : Anne Gray
Download or read book George Lambert, 1873-1930 written by Anne Gray and published by Fine Art Publishing. This book was released on 1996 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this long-awaited monograph art historian Anne Gray draws upon a mass of documents to reveal Lambert's considerable achievements in his art and his life. Biographical information is integrated with detailed analysis of the works of art, many of which are now regarded as major examples of early twentieth-century art. Gray traces Lambert's emergence from a rural environment and recounts how Lambert's exposure to Paris, and to the art of the British moderns, ran parallel to an increasingly complex personal life. A sympathetic account is given of his marriage to Amy Lambert, his relationship with Thea Proctor, and his many friendships with artists and local eccentrics. Above all, Lambert is revealed as an artist who worked at his art with unfailing dedication, frequently pushing himself to the point of exhaustion, and finally to death.
