Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Reid Dick (1878-1961) was one of a generation of British sculptors air-brushed out of art history by the Modernist critics of the late twentieth century. This long-overdue monograph adds to the recent revival of interest in this group of forgotten sculptors, by describing the life and work of arguably the leading figure of the group in unprecedented depth. The facts of Reid Dick's life and his most important works are presented against a backdrop of the historical, social and aesthetic changes taking place during his lifetime. Dennis Wardleworth elucidates why Reid Dick's reputation plummeted so quickly, and why his position in the history of British art deserves to be restored. This study draws upon a wealth of previously unpublished material, including over 2000 letters, and press cuttings and photographs in the Tate Archive, as well as letters and photographs held by Reid Dick's family. It traces the sculptor's story from his birth in the Gorbals in Glasgow, to his election to the Royal Academy and knighting by George V, to the decline of his career and his late-life connection with American millionaire and art collector Huntington Hartford. The first monograph on Reid Dick since 1945, the book also includes images of over 40 of his works and a listing of over 200 works identified by the author.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the significant growth of sculpture as an artistic form in Europe and America from 1900-1945. Using a clearly-defined thematic structure it identifies key issues and developments throughout this important period in the history of art. Individualchapters cover: public sculpture, the monument, the object, image-making, the built environment, the figurative ideal, and different materials. These themes broadly reflect the changing cultural and political climate of a turbulent period which included two world wars, each preceded by widespreadrising nationalism. The practice of sculpture is considered within the wider artistic context of painting and architecture and the development of international art markets. Auguste Rodin, whose ground-breaking exhibition opened in Paris in 1900, serves as the book's point of departure, and as arecurrent point of reference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The streets and public spaces of London are rich with statues and monuments commemorating the city's great figures and events – from Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square and Sir Christopher Wren's Great Fire Monument to the charming Peter Pan statue in Kensington Gardens, the range is glorious. Some commemorate events, while others celebrate people real or fictional; some take the form of small reliefs, while others are huge bronzes on pedestals, larger than life-size. Executed in stone, bronze and a range of other materials, London's statues and monuments include work by some of the world's greatest sculptors, and this book is a fully illustrated guide to the pieces and their stories: sometimes surprising and occasionally controversial, but always fascinating.

Book excerpt: In recent years the intersections between art history and archaeology have become the focus of critical analysis by both disciplines. Contemporary sculpture has played a key role in this dialogue. The essays in this volume, by art historians, archaeologists and artists, take the intersection between sculpture and archaeology as the prelude for analysis, examining the metaphorical and conceptual role of archaeology as subject matter for sculptors, and the significance of sculpture as a three-dimensional medium for exploring historical attitudes to archaeology.

Book excerpt: The Victoria Memorial in front of Buckingham Palace is a national icon, yet few have heard of its sculptor, Thomas Brock. He left school at 12 to be an apprentice at the Worcester Royal Porcelain Works, then joined the London studio of John Henry Foley. He completed the figure of the Prince Consort for the Albert Memorial after Foleys death. One of the young sculptors encouraged by Sir Frederic Leighton, he became famous for his lifelike portrait statues of Queen Victoria, Edward VII, Gladstone, Millais and other public figures. Chosen in 1901 as sole sculptor of the Victoria Memorial, he was knighted by King George V at its unveiling in 1911. Brocks remarkable story is told by his son Frederick in this entertaining biography, written in the 1920s and now published by permission of the Victoria and Albert Museum. A highly readable and intriguing perspective on a sculptors life in the late 19th and early 20th century, one which reveals as much about the art world of his time as about the individual whose life forms its subject. John Sankey has worked extensively on Brock and his edition of these memoirs is exemplary. Dr Marjorie Trusted (Senior Curator of Sculpture, Victoria & Albert Museum) An astonishingly thorough record of the life of a sculptor who, a hundred years back, distilled from European traditions an idiom which now seems to be the appropriate indeed almost the only imaginable backdrop to royal ceremonial. In bringing this record to a wider readership, John Sankey reveals some of the less well-known facets of Brocks extensive sculptural oeuvre, disseminated around the globe from Copenhagen to Wellington (NZ) Philip Ward-Jackson (formerly Conway Librarian, Courtauld Institute of Art)
