Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terrier-breed expert Bardi McLennan unveils the mystery of the Irish Terrier, whose "heedless, reckless pluck" has made him the indisputable "daredevil" of the dog world. Fiery, protective, friendly, and affectionate, the Irish Terrier possesses an intense personality that is only exceeded by his loyalty to his owner and family. In the history chapter that opens this Comprehensive Owner's Guide, McLennan retells the origins of the terriers of the Emerald Isle, how various terrier types evolved, and how the Irish Terrier;as a purebred dog;came to fame and favor among farmers, dog breeders, military personnel, and peasants, especially as a children's companion. In the chapter on the breed's characteristics, the author offers sound advice for all potential owners of the Irish Terrier. Recognizing the breed's bold and boisterous nature, the Irish Terrier "is not a breed for the timid, the weak-willed or those who merely wish to pamper a pet and be pampered in return." Today's Irish Terriers, though not as "reckless" as his forebears, "should not be thought of anything more than assertive. He is not aggressive toward people, but he is a dog who likes who he is and doesn't mind letting others know it."New owners will welcome the well-prepared chapter on finding a reputable breeder and selecting a healthy, sound puppy. Chapters on puppy-proofing the home and yard, purchasing the right supplies for the puppy as well as house-training, feeding, and grooming are illustrated with photographs of handsome adults and puppies. In all, there are over 135 full-color photographs in this useful and reliable volume. The author's advice on obedience training will help the reader better mold and train into the most well-mannered dog in the neighborhood. The extensive and lavishly illustrated chapter on healthcare provides up-to-date detailed information on selecting a qualified veterinarian, vaccinations, preventing and dealing with parasites, infectious diseases, and more. Sidebars throughout the text offer helpful hints, covering topics as diverse as historical dogs, breeders, or kennels, toxic plants, first aid, crate training, carsickness, fussy eaters, and parasite control. Fully indexed.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scottish and Irish Terriers The perfect Scottie's head is long, but broad across the skull, with a stout muzzle and a large black nose that sticks out beyond the line of the lips, making him look pig-jawed, though in reality his lower teeth are even with the upper. His head looks a size too big for his body to the novice, but he has plenty of brain room and the biggest, strongest, whitest teeth of any terrier, barring the giant of the race, the Aire dale. His ears should be small, V-shaped, and erect. The Standard allows semi-prick cars, like those of the Collie, but Fashion has fav ored the erect, and the semi-pricked ears are never seen in the show ring. His eyes should be like shoe-buttons, bright as live coals, set wide apart, and deep sunk, for a large, light, pop eye ruins his clever, varmity expression. This book was released on 2015-01-23 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book ( Irish Terriers ) provides you with a through description and positive attributes of this breed including origin, purpose, history, normal heights and weights, acceptable colors and behavioral traits. Our books differ from most books on dog breeds because this book also provides you with a comprehensive and authoritative source of all the known predisposed hereditary health syndromes for the breed. You will find extensive references for each problem described. We also provide the breed club address for this breed and a list of laboratories and organizations that can provide professional help and information. As a small animal veterinarian, I have always been intrigued by the way dogs have been bred to fill a purpose in life and further impressed that they also tend to love performing that service. Greyhounds and other sight hounds are built for speed with aerodynamic bodies consisting of small head, deep chest, narrow waist and large leg muscles. On the other hand Dachshunds take their name from German words meaning badger dog and they use their long nose, long body and short legs to both track, enter and dig into badger dens. After developing a practice that catered to clients with show dogs, my interest in each breed continued to grow as I studied and observed more and more about the unique predisposition and incidence of health problems in each breed. Breeders of purebred dogs for show were a challenge and inspirational for me to research and help them with their unique health problems. Historically references to hereditary problems are scattered throughout various Veterinary medical texts and journals such as ophthalmology, neurology, gastroenterology, cardiovascular and dermatology. This book, as well as the other books and articles I have written, is researched and compiled with the intention to provide both veterinarians and dog owners with comprehensive and authoritative predisposition information under the breed name. At the date of this publication, The American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation and the The Kennel Club of England reports over 400 known hereditary health syndromes throughout the dog kingdom. At the writing of my first book in 1983, less than 50 hereditary issues are able to be predicted and or diagnosed. Sequencing of the canine genome, DNA tests, metabolic testing including blood tests and urine testing; plus, phenotypic examinations such as radiographs, ultrasound, and CERF or OFA eye registry exams by a Board Certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist have advanced the science of breed related health and behavioral problems. This book will provide veterinarians, researchers, pet owners and breeders with a comprehensive guide to all the known problems veterinarians and dog owners should consider during pet selection and throughout each life stage of our canine friends.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Irish Terrier is a breed of dog that is a member of the Terrier typing. The breed originates from Ireland and is considered to be one of the oldest breeds of terrier. The Irish Terrier was originally developed for its gameness, as it has a great innate instinct to hunt and kill vermin. The Irish Terrier was famously described as 'the poor man's sentinel, the farmer's friend, and the gentleman's favorite, ' by F. M. Jowett in their work 'The Irish Terrier.' Breed standards describe the Irish Terrier as racy, rectangular shaped and of a red coloration. The breed is powerful without being overly heavy. The breed's double coat comes in a variety of red colorations and its one of its most unique features. The outer coat is wiry in texture and should never been silky, woolly or wavy. The inner part of the breed's coat, called the 'underwood, ' should be densely packed and also of a red coloration. The temperament of dogs is normally affected by the following factors: individual personality, heredity, training and socialization. It is therefore important to make sure that you meet the puppy's mother before purchasing a Irish Terrier. It is also important to make sure to thoroughly socialize your Irish Terrier with strangers, children and other animals during its puppyhood. Generally speaking, the Irish Terrier is very good with people and has a high sense of loyalty towards their family unit. The Irish Terrier is a great choice for families with young children, as the Irish Terrier is an extremely tolerant breed and can handle a fair deal of 'rough housing.' However it is important to note that the Irish Terrier has a high prey drive, due to their hunting history. It is therefore not recommend to keep an Irish Terrier in the same household as a smaller pet (such as a cat) - although it is possible to socialize your Irish Terrier with small animals during its puppyhood which could lead to the Irish Terrier living peacefully with smaller household pets. It is important to note that as a working breed, the Irish Terrier has a high amount of energy which needs to be expended. If the Irish Terrier has a buildup of energy it is likely to develop destructive behaviors due to boredom or hyperactivity. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. It is important to try and learn as much as you can about the animal you are considering to keep as a pet to make sure that your lifestyle, household and financial status are suited to provide your pet with the best possible care. This guide has been designed to provide you with both precise and concise information about a Irish Terrier's basic needs to help you provide your pet with the best quality care practices. This guide will give an in-depth explanation on training your Irish Terrier, raising your Irish Terrier from a puppy, grooming, health care and everything in between! "The Irish Terrier: A Complete and Comprehensive Owners Guide to: Buying, Owning, Health, Grooming, Training, Obedience, Understanding and Caring for Your Irish Terrier," by Michael Stonewood is the perfect purchase or gift for a first time Irish Terrier owner. This guide includes sections on caring for a puppy, breeding, health care, training, the basic cost of owning an Irish Terrier and much more. This book is the second edition - the first edition was published by 'Dog Care Professionals.'
