Download or read book Scottish Coins written by Donald Bateson and published by Shire Publications. This book was released on 1987 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thistle on the modern British five pence piece is a reminder of what was once a separate Scottish coinage. For over two hundred years only silver pennies were minted but from the fourteenth century a succession of new types and values appeared, including gold nobles, unicorns, ducats, unites, silver ryals, merks and dollars. The Scottish coinage was one of endless change and variety and was only brought to an end following the Act of Union in 1707. About the author Born in Belfast, Donald Bateson took charge of the Numismatics section in the Ulser Museum and in 1978 moved to Glasgow to become Curator of the Hunter coin cabinet at Glasgow University.

Book Synopsis The Coinage of Scotland, Vol. 1 of 3 (Classic Reprint) by : Edward Burns
Download or read book The Coinage of Scotland, Vol. 1 of 3 (Classic Reprint) written by Edward Burns and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Coinage of Scotland, Vol. 1 of 3 Every coin described has been examined by the author, with the exception of those in the British Museum and Hunterian collections, of which casts were kindly forwarded to him. The Scottish coinage has thus been dealt with in the same manner as if the several examples of the different reigns had all been brought together in one great collection. Owing to the exceptional advantages thus enjoyed, it has been possible for the first time to treat the coinage of Scotland as a whole, and, while giving a more comprehensive view of this great national subject than has ever hitherto been attempted, to enter with greater minuteness into the details. The plates have been executed by M. P. Dujardin of Paris, by the helio-gravure process, and their arrangement has been generally to place together the several pieces related to and illustrative of each other. This has necessarily been done irrespective of the positions of the coins as de scribed in the body of the work. In each case the number of the coin, as it appears in the descriptive list and in the plates, has been given.
