Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science and Prayer: And Other Papers The essays contained in this volume are chosen from among many on account of the permanent and vital importance of the themes discussed in them. Some Of them have never before been pub lished, but a part of them have appeared from time to time in periodicals or in pamphlet form. The first, which furnishes the leading title Of this book, was prepared, at the request of the edi tor, for The North American Review. At the time not a few scientists were stoutly contending, Since the laws of nature are immutable, that the belief that God answers prayer for rain or the re covery of the sick is not only untenable but even preposterous. And some such scientists still lin ger among us. The second paper, written only a few months ago, is an efiort to free the doctrine of the atone ment of all arbitrary elements and to interpret on natural and scientific grounds what the Scrip tures say of the sufferings of Christ. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relation Between Religion, and Science The attempt is made in this thesis to examine the age long problem of the interrelationship of religion and science from a new angle, namely that of psychology considered as a biological science. There is a general recognition today that the elements common to the religions and those common to the sciences are psychological. The facts of religious experience and the facts Of scientific experi ence are so multiform that the only place to discover a common basis is in the attitudes of consciousness giving rise to these variant concrete expressions. Furthermore there is a general recognition among psychologists that the genesis of all the attitudes, including the religious and the scientific, is localizable in the instinctive behaviors of the psycho-physical organism. It seems only fair that psychologists should recognize that those best equipped to define instinctive behavior are the biolo gists. On the basis of a biologically acceptable definition, a sound theory of the origin of religion and science is possible. The theory proposed is that these attitudes have their roots in behavior which, while instinctive, is multiple. In proof Of the contention, refer ence is made to many of the rites and practices of primitive peoples which are recorded in the source books on anthropology. It is the hope of the author that this effort may contribute in some small measure to the solution of a great problem. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Science Against Itself There probably has not sprung up In the last two thousand years a popular her esy that has so widely fastened itself in the public mind, and so seriously threatened the life Of the Churches, as that recent fanatical movement known as Christian Science. No fanaticism, perhaps, in Six thousand years, has been built on more absurd and self-con tradictory tenets than this same system of so-called Science and Health, promulgated by one Mrs. Eddy, who lays claim to having discovered the secret Of perpetual youth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This vintage book comprises three famous Malinowski essays on the subject of religion. Malinowski is one of the most important and influential anthropologists of all time. He is particularly renowned for his ability to combine the reality of human experience, with the cold calculations of science. An important collection of three of his most famous essays, "Magic, Science and Religion" provides its reader with a series of concepts concerning religion, magic, science, rite and myth. This is undertaken in an attempt to form a definite impression and understanding of the Trobrianders of New Guinea. The chapters of this book include: "Magic, Science and Religion", "Primitive Man and his Religion", "Rational Mastery by Man of his Surroundings", "Faith and Cult", "The Creative Acts of Religion", "Providence in Primitive Life", "Man's Selective Interest in Nature", etcetera. This book is being republished now in an affordable, modern edition - complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.
