Wattles was a writer best known for his literature on the New Thought Movement that was developed in the 1800s. This was a spiritual movement in the United States that followed the teachings of a spiritual teacher named Phineas Quimby. His "New Thought" ideas had to do with God being everywhere in our lives and that everything we do are divine. If we were to endure hardship, like develop an illness, then we must open our minds to God's wisdom in order to overcome it. This same concept can be applied to mental barriers that hold us back from being successful. In the book "The Science of Getting Rich," Wattles explains how to overcome these mental barriers and how creating something new will attract more wealth than simply trying to compete with others. In the book "The Science of Getting Rich", Wattles describes certain mental concepts and strategies that will help become wealthier in your life. For example, someone with a negative mindset who is always cynical will never be able to create wealth because they will be too afraid to try anything new. Wallace motivates people to have a positive mindset and take a chance on their ideas in order to create wealth for themselves. Wattles based the concepts of "The Science of Getting Rich" on a set of Hindu philosophies where "one is all" and "all is one." Wattles described these concepts as the "Certain Way of Thinking." According to the editor-in-chief of Penguin Books Michael Horowitz, the "Certain Way" idea was a descendent of the mental healing movement that was started by Phineas P. Quimby towards the late 1800s. Quimby taught that having a positive attitude towards the physical symptoms of discomfort in your life will cause you to feel relief from them. This proper mindset involves conducting numerous mental strategies developed by Quimby. As for Wattles, he took these ideas and built on them in his book "The Science of Getting Rich" and wrote about topics such as mind training, business prosperity and succeeding in the material world.

Book excerpt: "The Science of Getting Rich" by Wallace D. Wattles is a seminal work in the self-help and personal development genre, originally published in 1910. In this book, Wattles outlines a philosophy and a set of principles for achieving wealth and success through a systematic approach grounded in the power of thought and action. Key themes and concepts explored in the book include: The Power of Thought: Wattles argues that the primary driver of success is one's mindset. He emphasizes the importance of cultivating a positive mental attitude, believing in one's ability to achieve wealth, and maintaining a clear and focused vision of one's goals. The Creative Process: Wattles introduces the concept of the "creative process," suggesting that the universe operates according to certain laws, including the law of attraction. By aligning one's thoughts, beliefs, and actions with these laws, individuals can attract wealth and abundance into their lives. Taking Action: While thoughts are essential, Wattles emphasizes that action is equally important. He encourages readers to take decisive action towards their goals, guided by faith and confidence in their ability to succeed. The Right to Be Rich: Contrary to some prevailing beliefs, Wattles asserts that it is not only acceptable but also desirable to desire wealth and abundance. He argues that everyone has the right to be rich and that achieving financial success can lead to personal fulfillment and contribute to the greater good. Gratitude and Abundance: Wattles emphasizes the importance of gratitude and appreciation for what one already has as a key component of attracting more abundance into one's life. "The Science of Getting Rich" provides practical guidance and exercises for applying these principles in daily life. While the language and examples used may reflect the time in which it was written, the core principles of the book remain relevant and applicable to readers seeking to improve their financial situation and overall well-being.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Policymakers, medical practitioners, and the public alike face an increasingly bewildering flood of new and often contradictory scientific studies on almost every topic. Whether the issue is the the best treatment for breast cancer, the need for prenatal food programs to improve the health of poor infants and mothers, or the ability of women to succeed in scientific professions, the healthy growth of modern science has at times done more to stir up controversy than to establish reliable knowledge. But now scientists in several fields have developed a sophisticated new methodology called meta-analysis to address this problem. By numerically combining diverse research findings on a single question, meta-analysis can be used to identify their central tendency and reach conclusions far more reliable than those of any single investigation. How Science Takes Stock vividly tells the story of meta-analysis through the eyes of its architects and champions, and chronicles its history, techniques, achievements, and controversies. Noted science author Morton Hunt visits key practitioners and recounts their use of meta-analysis to resolve important scientific puzzles and longstanding debates. Does psychotherapy work, and if so what form works best? Does spending federal money on education really improve student performance? Can a single enzyme significantly decrease the risk of heart attack? Do boot camps reduce juvenile delinquency? With each account, Hunt illustrates the major components of the meta-analytic method, reveals strategies for resolving practical and theoretical problems, and discusses the impact of meta-analysis on the science and policy communities. In many cases, he demonstrates how meta-analysts have gone a step further to determine the causes of earlier discrepancies. In this way they not only identify successful approaches to the question at hand, but also clarify the conditions under which they will work best. Hunt also portrays the important but frequently controversial business of doing meta-analysis for legislators and government agencies, particularly in sensitive areas of social policy. How Science Takes Stock demonstrates how the statistical techniques of meta-analysis produce more accurate data than the standard literature review or the old-fashioned process of tallying up the results of each scientific study as if they were votes in an election to decide the truth. Hunt also addresses issues of quality control in each phase of the meta-analytic process, and answers skeptics who claim that the dissimilarities between studies are often too significant for meta-analysis to be any more than an apples and oranges approach. This volume conveys the power of meta-analysis to help social policymakers and health professionals resolve their most pressing problems. How Science Takes Stock concludes with a discussion of the future of meta-analysis that examines its potential for further refinements, its growth in the scientific literature, and exciting new possibilities for its future use. An appendix by meta-analysis expert Harris Cooper offers some finer points on the mechanics of conducting a meta-analytic investigation.
