Book excerpt: The Fifth Edition of Greenfield's Surgery has been thoroughly revised, updated, and refocused to conform to changes in surgical education and practice. Reflecting the increasingly clinical emphasis of residency programs, this edition features expanded coverage of clinical material and increased use of clinical algorithms. Key Points open each chapter, and icons in the text indicate where Key Points are fully discussed. Many of the black-and-white images from the previous edition have been replaced by full-color images. This edition has new chapters on quality assessment, surgical education, and surgical processes in the hospital. Coverage of surgical subspecialty areas is more sharply focused on topics that are encountered by general surgeons and included in the current general surgery curriculum and ABSITE exam. The vascular section has been further consolidated. A new editor, Diane M. Simeone, MD, PhD, has joined the editorial team. This edition is available either in one hardbound volume or in a four-volume softbound set. The lightweight four-volume option offers easy portability and quick access. Each volume is organized by organ system so you can find the facts you need within seconds. The companion website presents the fully searchable text, an instant-feedback test bank featuring over 800 questions and answers, and a comprehensive image bank. Unique to this new edition's website are 100 "Morbidity and Mortality" case discussions. Each case reviews a specific surgical complication, how the complication was addressed, and reviews the literature on approaches and outcomes.

Download or read book Surgery written by Cohn and published by PMPH-USA. This book was released on 2012 with total page 1020 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to "when to" and "what to" rather than "how to," this book provides evidence-based surgical reviews to provide credible answers to age-old surgical management questions. The management issues presented are oriented toward interventions and use evidence-based techniques to assess the safety and efficacy of new treatments and rehabilitative or preventative interventions. Each chapter is organized around the key questions essential to delineating the current status of evidence related to the subject reviewed. Publications from the past decade are cited that provide Level I and II evidence using the Oxford scale. Throughout Elective General Surgery, careful assessment of the validity of intervention studies and the strength of the evidence that they provide underlies the choices of cited publications. The information presented in this volume guides the scientific surgeon in providing state-of-the-art care and in optimizing the use of medical resources without losing sight of the need to address the unique needs of individual patients.

This book was released on 2010-03-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ambroise Paré (1510–1590) was a French surgeon who specialized in battlefield medicine, especially wound treatment. He was the official royal surgeon for the kings Henry II, Francis II, Charles IX and Henry III. A humane and dedicated physician, Paré was intensely concerned with the dissemination of knowledge about medicine. He contributed to the development of artificial limbs and also spawned several significant advancements in obstetrics. His medical achievements led Paré to be regarded as the “Father of Modern Surgery.” This edition, published in 1969, is the first English translation of Ten Books of Surgery, and it contains records of many of the most advanced medical practices of the time. Paré describes procedures for the treatment of battle wounds and gangrene, and also deals with ordinary ailments such as bone fractures, contusions, and kidney stones. Paré's work provides valuable insight into an age when the practice of medicine was moved towards the discipline and order of science but was still considerably affected by superstition.

Book Synopsis Principles and Practice of Geriatric Surgery by : Ronnie Ann Rosenthal
Download or read book Principles and Practice of Geriatric Surgery written by Ronnie Ann Rosenthal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-12 with total page 1364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the preface to this impressive and well-produced book, the editors state that their aim is not to describe a new surgical specialty, since most surgeons will soon need to be "geriatric surgeons," but to assemble a comprehensive account that will allow "all providers of healthcare to the elderly to understand the issues involved in choosing surgery as a treatment option for their patients." This is a useful book that deserves to do well. I hope that the editors and their publisher will have the stamina to make this the first of several editions, as it is clear that updated information about surgery in the elderly will be required to keep pace with this important field." Book Synopsis Surgery, the Ultimate Placebo by : Ian Harris
Download or read book Surgery, the Ultimate Placebo written by Ian Harris and published by NewSouth. This book was released on 2016-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A senior surgeon suggests that many commonly performed operations are not necessary and that any benefits they offer are a placebo. For many complaints and conditions the benefits from surgery are lower, and the risks higher, than you or your surgeon think. In this book you will see how commonly performed operations can be found to be useless or even harmful when properly evaluated. Of course no surgeon is recommending invasive surgery in bad faith, but Ian Harris argues that the evidence for the success for many common operations, including knee arthroscopies, back fusion or cardiac stenting, become current accepted practice without full examination of the evidence. The placebo effect may be real, but is it worth the recovery time, expense and discomfort?
