Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Without Walls is Milton’s Toubkin’s unique memoir, which begins with an impoverished, but generally happy, early childhood in South Africa and ends with Milton’s retirement. Like most people, Milton faced many difficulties throughout his life, ranging from the divorce of his parents, his mother’s suicide attempt and the death of his daughter at the age of just nineteen. But Without Walls also records the happiest moments of the author’s life, including meeting and marrying his wife Marj, becoming a father to two children and becoming a grandfather. The book also explores the huge impact that Milton had on the international educational system in London as a result of his founding Southbank International School with his colleagues. Milton describes the school’s modest beginnings, surviving with little money and no external support, before growing to become an outstanding educational institution with a unique programme. The story of this ‘school without walls’ forms a significant part of Milton’s life story. Inspired by The School without Walls by John Bremer and Michael von Moschzisker and Peter Godwin’s A White Boy in Africa, Without Walls is a unique biography that will appeal to readers interested in education, as well as those that enjoy memoirs. It will also be enjoyed by former pupils and associates of Southbank International School.

Book Synopsis Alternative Schools by : Brenda Edgerton Conley
Download or read book Alternative Schools written by Brenda Edgerton Conley and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-11-22 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of the growth and development of alternative schools in American society and their role in the public school environment. In Alternative Schools: A Reference Handbook, educator Brenda Edgerton Conley surveys the emerging alternatives to our conventional educational system—a system that is not only costly, but ineffective for many children. In a resource aimed at a broad audience—school administrators, politicians, and, most important, parents—Conley offers both a historical and a present-day perspective on alternative educational programs. What sets the alternative education movement apart, she argues, is its acknowledgment that we all learn differently. That knowledge has given rise to an explosion of exciting alternatives—from open schools to home schooling, from charter schools to church schools. These alternative schools are smaller and less bureaucratic, more responsive to the community, and more receptive to change.

Download or read book Schools on Trial written by Nikhil Goyal and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2017-01-10 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A devastating critique of the American way of education and a hopeful blueprint for change which can unlock the creativity and joy of learning inherent in all students. In this book Nikhil Goyal—a journalist and activist, whom The Washington Post has dubbed a “future education secretary” and Forbes has named to its 30 Under 30 list—both offers a scathing indictment of our teach-to-the-test-while-killing-the-spirit educational assembly line and maps out a path for all of our schools to harness children’s natural aptitude for learning by creating an atmosphere conducive to freedom and creativity. He prescribes an inspiring educational future that is thoroughly democratic and experiential, and one that utilizes the entire community as a classroom.

Book Synopsis Alternative Schools in British Columbia 1960-1975 by : Harley Rothstein
Download or read book Alternative Schools in British Columbia 1960-1975 written by Harley Rothstein and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2024-08-09 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tumultuous 1960s was an era of the counterculture, political activism, and resistance to authority. Conventions and values were challenged and new approaches to education captured the imaginations of parents, teachers, and students. Reacting against the one-size-fits-all nature of the traditional public school system, groups of parents and teachers in Canada and the United States established alternative schools or “free schools” based on the Progressive, child-centred philosophy of John Dewey and the Romantic ideas of Summerhill founder A.S. Neill. In Alternative Schools in British Columbia, 1960-1975, Harley Rothstein tells the story of ten such schools that arose in the province of British Columbia. Drawing on 350 self-conducted interviews, newspaper articles, personal journals, and school records, Dr. Rothstein invites readers to experience the early days of alternative schools. He describes the educational philosophy, curriculum, and governance of these institutions, and introduces readers to the people who were at the heart of alternative communities. Tracing the evolution, successes, and challenges of each school, he presents the day-to-day experience and brings to life the ethos of the 1960s era. Historians, educators, and all curious readers will become immersed in this engaging account of a group of educational pioneers on Canada’s west coast, and how they inspired the liberalization of the public school system that would come in the 1970s.
Book Synopsis Excellence for All by : Jack Schneider
Download or read book Excellence for All written by Jack Schneider and published by Vanderbilt University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the early twenty-first century, a startling consensus had emerged about the overall aim of American school reform. In an era of political discord, and in a field historically known for contentiousness, the notion of promoting educational excellence for all students was a distinct point of bipartisan agreement. Shaped by a corps of entrepreneurial reformers intent on finding "what works" and taking it to scale, this hybrid vision won over the nation's most ambitious and well-resourced policy leaders at foundations and nonprofits, in state and federal government, and in urban school districts from coast to coast. "Excellence for all" might, at first glance, appear to be nothing more than a rhetorical flourish. Who, after all, would oppose the idea of a great education for every student? Yet it is hardly a throwaway phrase. Rather, it represents a surprising fusion of educational policy approaches that had been in tense opposition throughout the twentieth century--those on the right favoring social efficiency, and those on the left supporting social justice. This book seeks to understand why the "excellence for all" vision took hold at the time it did, unpacks the particular beliefs and assumptions embedded in it, and details the often informal coalition building that produced this period of consensus. Examining the nation's largest urban school districts (Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York), the author details three major reform efforts in chapters titled "The Right Space: The Small Schools Movement"; "The Right Teachers: Teach for America"; and "The Right Curriculum: Expanding Advanced Placement."
