Book excerpt: When Liz Courtney uncovers the remains of a Spitfire in Haggard's Copse, her discovery triggers a chain of supernatural events which evoke the summer of 1940 when Fitzdeverall Field was a fighter station and the Battle of Britain a few short weeks away. Liz finds herself drawn compulsively towards the men and women of Fitzdeverall whose poignant story is played out against the perilous backdrop of England's war-torn skies. Their lives are changed irrevocably by the fateful posting of the young South African pilot, Joel de Vries, from the bleak moors of Cornwall to the sunlit apple orchards of Kent.

His own quest for enlightenment through exhausting bouts of deep thought has given him liberating insight, and many of the poems in this collection probe the mysteries of man's existence. Others are based on a great diversity of subjects, from childhood memories (‘First Confession’) to environmental issues (‘The Death of a Tree’), relationships (‘Love Assassination’) and nature (‘The Mysterious Hare’). They all reveal something of the great diversity of human experience on this endlessly fascinating planet we call Earth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like their penchant for clubs, cricket, and hunting, the planting of English gardens by the British in India reflected an understandable need on the part of expatriates to replicate home as much as possible in an alien environment. In Flora's Empire, Eugenia W. Herbert argues that more than simple nostalgia or homesickness lay at the root of this "garden imperialism," however. Drawing on a wealth of period illustrations and personal accounts, many of them little known, she traces the significance of gardens in the long history of British relations with the subcontinent. To British eyes, she demonstrates, India was an untamed land that needed the visible stamp of civilization that gardens in their many guises could convey. Colonial gardens changed over time, from the "garden houses" of eighteenth-century nabobs modeled on English country estates to the herbaceous borders, gravel walks, and well-trimmed lawns of Victorian civil servants. As the British extended their rule, they found that hill stations like Simla offered an ideal retreat from the unbearable heat of the plains and a place to coax English flowers into bloom. Furthermore, India was part of the global network of botanical exploration and collecting that gathered up the world's plants for transport to great imperial centers such as Kew. And it is through colonial gardens that one may track the evolution of imperial ideas of governance. Every Government House and Residency was carefully landscaped to reflect current ideals of an ordered society. At Independence in 1947 the British left behind a lasting legacy in their gardens, one still reflected in the design of parks and information technology campuses and in the horticultural practices of home gardeners who continue to send away to England for seeds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the eve of battle, passions are running high... IN THE SUMMER OF 1815, with Napolean Bonaparte marching down from the north, Brussels is a whirlwind of parties, balls and soirees. In the swirling social scene surrounding the Duke of Wellington and his noble aides de camp, no one attracts more attention than the beautiful, outrageous young widow Lady Barbara Childe. On their first meeting, dashing Colonel Charles Audley proposes to her, but even their betrothal doesn't calm her wild behavior. Finally, with the Battle of Waterloo raging just miles away, civilians fleeing and the wounded pouring back into the town, Lady Barbara discovers where her heart really lies, and like a true noblewoman, she rises to the occasion, and to the demands of love, life and war... "Wonderful characters, elegant, witty writing, perfect period detail, and rapturously romantic. Georgette Heyer achieves what the rest of us only aspire to."—Katie Fforde "A brilliant achievement...vivid, accurate, dramatic...the description of Waterloo is magnificent."—Daily Mail "My favorite historical novelist."—Margaret Drabble
