Book Synopsis The Royal Entomological Society Book of British Insects by : Peter C. Barnard
Download or read book The Royal Entomological Society Book of British Insects written by Peter C. Barnard and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-10-24 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Royal Entomological Society (RES) and Wiley-Blackwell are proud to present this landmark publication, celebrating the wonderful diversity of the insects of the British Isles, and the work of the RES (founded 1833). This book is the only modern systematic account of all 558 families of British insects, covering not just the large and familiar groups that are included in popular books, but even the smallest and least known. It is beautifully illustrated throughout in full colour with photographs by experienced wildlife photographers to show the range of diversity, both morphological and behavioural, among the 24,000 species. All of the 6,000 genera of British insects are listed and indexed, along with all the family names and higher groups. There is a summary of the classification, biology and economic importance of each family together with further references for detailed identification. All species currently subject to legal protection in the United Kingdom are also listed. The Royal Entomological Society is one of the oldest and most prestigious of its kind in the world. It is the leading organisation for professional entomologists and its main aim has always been the promotion of knowledge about insects. The RES began its famous Handbooks for the Identification of British Insects in 1949, and new works in that series continue to be published. The Royal Entomological Society Book of British Insects has been produced to demonstrate the on-going commitment of the RES to educate and encourage each generation to study these fascinating creatures. This is a key reference work for serious students of entomology and amateur entomologists, as well as for professionals who need a comprehensive source of information about the insect groups of the British Isles they may be less familiar with.

Book Synopsis Forests and Insects by : Allan D. Watt
Download or read book Forests and Insects written by Allan D. Watt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1997-09-30 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the full breadth of forest entomology. It combines the work of forest entomologists working on the impact and management of forest pests with those involved in diversity assessment and conservation of insects in forests. Forests and Insects demonstrates that both these disciplines demand an understanding of population and community biology. The book covers such topics as colonization of trees by insects, population dynamics of forest insects, insect natural enemies, the effects of climate change and pollution on forest pests, spatial variation in the abundance of insects, the mineralization of carbon by termites, the impact of herbivorous insects, and the conservation of forest insect diversity, including the effects of forest fragmentation and deforestation. This Royal Entomological Society Symposium volume will be of great interest to all agricultural and forest entomologists, population and community biologists, pest management specialists and anyone concerned with the conservation of forest biodiversity.
Book Synopsis Arthropods of Economic Importance by : G. W. Watson
Download or read book Arthropods of Economic Importance written by G. W. Watson and published by UNESCO. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique computer-based information system comprising easy-to-understand, user-friendly interactive cd-roms for specialists and the general public. Provides an important thesaurus for scientific research, monitoring studies, nature conservation and environmental projects, as well as marine and agricultural activities. It has been elaborated by specialists and co-ordinated by the Expert-Center for Taxonomic Identification (ETI) of the University of Amsterdam and UNESCO. Armoured scale insects are important agricultural, horticultural and forestry pests that are difficult to identify. This CD-ROM holds an interactive identification guide and information source on economically important diaspidids of the world. It aims to enable agricultural entomologists working in agriculture, horticulture and forestry and plant quarantine inspectors to identify the most important species for themselves. The CD-ROM contains a pictorial key to adult females of 100 species in 48 genera, detailed information on their taxonomy, and information on their host-plants, biology and ecology, economic impact, natural enemies, distribution and common names. Diagnostic characters, distribution and hostplant information are provided on a further 85 similar species. This work was composed using the most recent literature from the best experts in the field and illustrations provided by numerous scientists, institutes and publishers around the world.
Book Synopsis Diaspididae (Insecta by : Rosa Constance Henderson
Download or read book Diaspididae (Insecta written by Rosa Constance Henderson and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The armoured scale insect family Diaspididae is one of ten families of plant-sucking scale insects present in New Zealand, and this family has three unique features. The first feature is that the stomach of armoured scale insects is not directly connected to the hind gut, so they do not produce honeydew; the second is their armour or scale cover, in which they incorporate the cast skins of their juvenile moults; and the third feature is the fused segments of the posterior part of the abdomen called the pygidium. In this Fauna the adult females of all 49 species of Diaspididae known from New Zealand, except the Leucaspidini, are described and illustrated. Four new genera and seven new species are described, and nomenclatural changes are noted. The 1st- and 2nd-instar nymphs of all the endemic species and of four Australian species that are of systematic interest are also described and illustrated. Keys to allow separation of adult females of all genera and species are included.Additional features of this Fauna include: a brief review of earlier work on the Diaspididae in New Zealand; discussion of the biology and life cycle, scale cover formation, natural enemies, distribution, host plant associations including galls, and economic importance; a guide to methods for slide-mounting Diaspididae as used in the NZ Arthropod Collection.

Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of Scale Insect Pests by : Takumasa Kondo
Download or read book Encyclopedia of Scale Insect Pests written by Takumasa Kondo and published by CABI. This book was released on 2022-06-15 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scale insects feed on plant juices and can easily be transported to new countries on live plants. They sometimes become invasive pests, costing billions of dollars in damage to crops worldwide annually, and farmers try to control them with toxic pesticides, risking environmental damage. Fortunately, scale insects are highly susceptible to control by natural enemies so biological control is possible. They have unique genetic systems, unusual metamorphosis, a broad spectrum of essential symbionts, and some are sources of commercial products like red dyes, shellac and wax. There is, therefore, wide interest in these unusual, destructive, beneficial, and abundant insects. The Encyclopedia of Scale Insect Pests is the most comprehensive work on worldwide scale insect pests, providing detailed coverage of the most important species (230 species in 26 families, 36% of the scale insect pest species known). Advice is provided on collection, preservation, slide-mounting, vouchering, and labelling of specimens, fully illustrated with colour photographs, diagrams and drawings.
