Book excerpt: An above-average high school student at Spring Palms High, Scott Kane lives a daily routine which few envy. Poised to be valedictorian of his class and almost assured of his entrance to the prestigious Southwood University, Scott only has one major problem: all-star bully Jack Williams. Jack has tormented Scott for the last seven years, and even though Scott has the moral support of his best friends Mark, Joseph, and Henry, he avoids Jack whenever possible. But the status quo is about to be upset. When Henry suffers a life-threatening accident apparently due to Jack, a furious Scott confronts his arch nemesis in the school's parking lot with every intention of beating him to a pulp. Just as Scott is about to deliver the final blow, their surroundings begin to shift violently, and the asphalt under their feet shatters like glass, tumbling Scott, his friends, and Jack into a mystical portal. Now inside the strange world of Dourren, the boys find themselves on a journey filled with danger, excitement, and incredible adventure beyond their wildest imaginations. As they learn about this new land, they become involved in a quest to obtain three swords of immense power, one that will culminate in a battle against an incredible evil...and teach them the meaning of true friendship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faith has lost something in the twenty-first century. In a drive to market Christianity to the world, churches have sacrificed the depth and riches of theology. Faith is bought and sold in American churches, but it is a faith without substance. Martin Recio, an Augustinian with decades of experience in ministry, shows us what it is that we've lost. Christianity is a revealed religion of redemption and reconciliation with the Lord God, through faith in his son, Jesus Christ. It is also an eschatological religion. It points to a victorious and triumphant conclusion, when Christ shall come in his second advent. Recio presents the teachings of our religion in their near-classical form, from creation through salvation to the end of time. This retelling of the Gospel of grace as it was known in the ancient world has the power to transform our modern society and beckon the coming of the kingdom of God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Threshold Phenomena reexamines Jacques Derrida’s thinking of hospitality, from his well-known writings of the 1990s to his recently-published seminars on the same topic. The book follows Derrida’s rereading of several central figures and texts on hospitality (Sophocles’ Oedipus at Colonus, Kant’s Perpetual Peace, Levinas’s Totality and Infinity) and his attempt to rethink questions surrounding not only private but also public hospitality in the form of immigration law, the contemporary treatment of migrants or stateless peoples, and the establishment of cities of asylum. Naas develops many of the central themes of Derrida’s seminar—the relationship between hospitality and teletechnology (telephone, internet, cyberspace, etc.), the role of fatherlands and mother tongues in hospitality, questions of purity, immunity, and xenophobia, and the possibility of extending hospitality beyond the human—to animals, plants, gods, and clones. Reframing Derrida’s approach to ethics, Naas reconsiders the relationship between hospitality and deconstruction, concluding that hospitality is not merely a theme to be treated by deconstruction but one of the best ways of describing its work. Naas’s book turns around a figure that Derrida himself returns to several times throughout the seminar: the threshold—a figure of hospitality par excellence, but also, in his seminars, another name for what Derrida in the 1960s began calling différance. Threshold Phenomena concludes that Derrida’s seminar on hospitality is one of the best introductions we have to Derrida’s work in general and one of the surest signs of its continuing relevance, a seminar that is at once fascinating and engaging in its own right and necessary for analyzing today’s increasingly nationalistic and xenophobic political climate.

Book excerpt: Basing his study on Jung's archetypal theory-especially that of initiation-Thresholds of Initiation represents thirty years of testing the theory in analytical practice. Joseph Henderson considers archetypes to be predictable patterns of inner conditioning that lead to certain essential changes and shows the parallels between individual psychological self-development and the rites that marked initiation in the past. Dr. Henderson's topics include the uninitiated; return of the mother; remaking a man; trial by strength; the rite of vision; thresholds of initiation; initiation and the principle of ego-development in adolescence; and initiation in the process of individuation. This is essential reading for an understanding of the universal nature of initiation, especially as it relates traditional initiatory practices to Jung's theory of archetypes.

In the venerable history of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, only one male has ever been expelled—but Murhder’s insanity gave the Brothers no choice. Book excerpt: “Wealth without work Pleasure without conscience Science without humanity Knowledge without character Politics without principle Commerce without morality Worship without sacrifice. https://vidjambov.blogspot.com/2023/01/book-inventory-vladimir-djambov-talmach.html Self-consciousness is the very objective being in its very essence, completely cleansed of everything particular and left only with itself. Consequently, there can be no illusions in him, there is nothing solely subjective in him: what is subjective in him is at the same time objective in him, because subjectivity itself is also objectivity, but in relation to itself. Thus, our self-awareness is as objective as the rest of our spiritual forces, in which all our unconscious mental changes take place. Meanwhile, the only difference is that the life of the unconscious soul consists of the relationship between it and the private objects surrounding it, and the life of self-consciousness consists of the attitude towards oneself. Unconscious being, subject to extraneous influence, can incorrectly reflect it in itself, changing it in accordance with its individual nature. Self-conscious being, entering into itself, cannot be wrong. If the relations between particular, influencing each other and reflected in each other objects can only be relations of a greater or lesser likeness, then the relation to oneself can only be identity. If similarity can have different degrees and, therefore, can change, then identity can only be one and, therefore, by its nature is unchanged absolutely authentic in the consciousness of its objective nature, being only the self-discovery of this latter.

Book excerpt: “Wealth without work Pleasure without conscience Science without humanity Knowledge without character Politics without principle Commerce without morality Worship without sacrifice. https://vidjambov.blogspot.com/2023/01/book-inventory-vladimir-djambov-talmach.html The goal and purpose of the Christian writer is to be a servant of the Word, to contribute to the disclosure in Him of the unified truth in its infinitely diverse manifestations in the earthly life of a Christian, and thereby lead the Christian soul along the path of Orthodoxy from temporary life to eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. After the publication of this book, I sent it as a gift to Bishop Theophan of Poltava. In response to this, Vladika wrote me the following on November 24, 1915: “Honorable Sergey Alexandrovich! I sincerely thank you for your attention to me, expressed in sending me your book “On the Bank of the River of God”. I read all your books with great interest and completely share your views on recent events. People of this world live by faith in progress and lull themselves into unrealizable dreams. Stubbornly and with some bitterness, they persecute the very idea of the demise of the world and the coming of Antichrist. Their eyes are spiritually blinded. Seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not understand. But the meaning of these events is not hidden from the truly believing children of God, and even more so: on whoever the favor of God rests, they will be open to the time of the coming of Antichrist and the end of the world for sure. When the Lord speaks out His formidable Judgment over the sinful world: My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh (Gen. 6:3); then He will say to His faithful servants: Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate ... and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you (2 Cor. 6:17; cf. Isa. 52:11). And hide them from the eyes of the world, sighing in fear of impending disasters. Therefore, the great merit of those who remind people of this world about the coming great times and events. May the Lord help you to Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. (2 Tim. 4:2). Your sincere admirer and worshiper, Bishop Theophanes.” “God help you to say this in the [preaching the word] hearing of the world of everything” - these words of the bishop came true in all accuracy during the years of the revolution. Such is the significance of the episcopal blessing, and moreover of such a bishop as Theophan.

After following the rules and wrestling with the temptations, nearly all dieters regain what they have lost–and then some. What’s worse, the anger and frustration of constant dieting just make us want to eat more! If only we could turn off the drive to overeat. But that’s impossible, right? Wrong! Based on the amazingly effective method developed by weight-loss expert Laurel Mellin, The 3-Day Solution Plan will give you a powerful, step-by-step plan to turn off the drive to overeat while shedding up to six pounds! A proven program for lasting weight loss without dieting, The Solution Method was developed by Mellin at the University of California, San Francisco’s School of Medicine. Health magazine named it one of the 10 top medical advances of 2000. But this is the first time The Solution Method has been made accessible to everyone as a results-oriented jumpstart to the program–and it only takes three days. The life-changing potential of The Solution Method is that it directly addresses the feeling brain, the home of our most primitive urges, like eating. But as Solution participants attest: this program works. Two- and six-year follow-up studies have shown The Solution to produce weight loss without dieting and unparalleled results in terms of keeping it off. In just three days you will get started with the method and • Lose up to six pounds without dieting • Learn how to turn off the drive to overeat • Follow the simple and healthy 1-2-3 Eating Plan • Find out how fantastic you can feel every day! As children sleeping on the rooftop of their ancestral family home in Raqqa on warm summer nights, Joumane and her sisters imagine the sky is so close they can almost touch it. Years later, Joumane lives as an expatriate in Jordan, working for a humanitarian agency, while her sisters remain trapped in war-torn Syria. Living alone as she fights her own battle with cancer, she contemplates the closeness of the same sky, despite the sharply delineated borders that now separate her from her family. Her only close confidant is another exile, a charming, divorced Palestinian man with whom she develops a warm relationship—later discovering that their relatives were neighbors in Syria. As Joumane undergoes painful chemotherapy treatments, Nasser slides into the role of her caretaker and partner. She comes to depend on him utterly, at the same time fearing that her vulnerability and need will ultimately drive him away. Interspersed with Joumane’s story is a sweeping historical narrative that moves from nineteenth-century Aleppo, Raqqa, and Damascus, to Palestine before and after the 1948 Nakba, to Iraq before and after the American occupation, and beyond to the United States, Serbia, and Vietnam. Each character in the book is revealed, and linked, through the stories of their ancestors, showing the intergenerational inheritance of trauma and identity. Ujayli’s attention to detail and evocative prose brings to life worlds forgotten and ignored, reminding us of the devastation of war and the beauty that people create wherever they go. Series: International Theological Commentary This commentary presents an Indonesian theologian's contemporary interpretation of Isaiah 1-39. According to S. H. Widyapranawa, in Isaiah we see the dynamics of faith in a turbulent world and we hear the prophetic admonition to uphold faith in the Lord and to oppose secularism, false prophecies, and sinful cultic practices. Indeed, this teaching from the eighth century B.C. is of paramount importance for the preaching of God's truth and justice in today's world.
