Book Synopsis Power of Popular Piety by : Ambrose Mong
Download or read book Power of Popular Piety written by Ambrose Mong and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-03-04 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the ambivalence of folk Catholicism as a resource to fight against injustice, exploitation, and oppression. Cases are cited to illuminate the value and potential trespasses of popular religious beliefs and practices. Over centuries, representatives of the powerful middle and upper middle classes did not hesitate to manipulate popular piety to protect their power and privileges. In fact, much of popular religion still reflects the dominant ideology. Popular piety has the potential for liberation against unjust social and economic structures. When properly guided, this practice can broaden and deepen political consciousness and mobilize people to act. Without a strong level of political consciousness as well as liberative evangelization, popular religion will be alienating to the poor while strengthening the status quo of the rich and the powerful. This study argues that it will be the elites, the well-educated and committed Christians, not the masses, who would foster the transformation of society.

Download or read book Baby Krishna, Infant Christ written by Kristin Johnston Largen and published by Orbis Books. This book was released on 2011 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A ground-breaking work in comparative theology. This stimulating work of comparative theology brings into conversation the stories of the infancy and youth Jesus with that of Krishna in the Hindu tradition. The early chapters tell the stories, first of Krishna and then of Jesus, and then describe the role each plays as savior for the faithful of that tradition. Chapter 1: Comparative Theology and Learning about Jesus Chapter 2: A Savior in Disguise the Stories Chapter 3: Krishna and His Followers How He Saves Chapter 4: Immanuel the Stories Chapter 5: Jesus and His Disciples How He Saves Chapter 6: All Grown Up Krishna and Jesus as Adults The text is not only readable but engaging, particularly when it explores the playfulness of the young Krishna and compares Krishna's early years with those of Jesus as described in such non-canonical writings as the Infancy Gospel of Thomas. Through this comparison Largen demonstrates the unique role Jesus' nature as both human and divine has in our Christian understanding of salvation.

Download or read book Journeys written by Tito Alquizola and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-12-08 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes, it only takes the actions of a few to make a positive impact on many. For Filipino native Tito Alquizola and his friends, it began in 1989 with a desire to pray with each other. What started as a small group of Filipino emigrants and friends meeting in a humble home soon turned into something much bigger than anyone could have imagined. Journeys tells the story of how a small prayer group became a large, Catholic devotional organization for the Santo Nio (Child Jesus), a countrywide devotion in the Philippines. Alquizola shares the history of the statue of the Santo Nio, which started in the late sixteenth century in the Philippines. This image has become a sense of home for Filipinos around the world. In addition, Alquiziola shares the personal stories of emigrants who, in their search for home, not only founded an organization, but also created a devotional family. Their dedication led to the opening of the Santo Nio Shrine at St. Paul Church in Tampa, Florida, and created peace and hope for many. An inspiring tale of faith and commitment, Journeys seeks to speak to your heart.

Book Synopsis Body, Movement, and Culture by : Sally Ann Ness
Download or read book Body, Movement, and Culture written by Sally Ann Ness and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-03-07 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Body, Movement, and Culture, Sally Ann Ness provides an original interpretive account of three forms of sinulog dancing practiced in Cebu City in the Philippines: a healing ritual, a dance drama, and a "cultural" exhibition dance. Ness's examination of these dance forms yields rich insights into the cultural predicament of this Philippine city and the way in which kinesthetic and visual symbols interact to create meaning. Ness scrutinizes the patterns of movement, the use of the body and of objects, and the shaping of space common to all three versions of the sinulog. She then relates these elements to the fundamental ways the culture bearers of Cebu City experience their world. For example, she shows how each of the dance forms functions to reinforce class distinctions and to establish a code of authenticated "cultural" action. At the same time, Ness demonstrates, the dances manifest and actualize widely applied notions about the nature of "devotion," "sincerity," "naturalness," and "beauty." Throughout the text, Ness provides a close analysis of movement that is all too often missing from anthropological studies of dance. Most significantly, she works to relate the movements used in dance to everyday movement and to interpret the attitudes and values that are embodied in both choreographed and quotidian movement. Important and illuminating, Body, Movement, and Culture is of particular interest to students and scholars of anthropology, folklore, dance, and Asian studies.
