Book Synopsis After the Gold Rush by : John Stuart Clark
Download or read book After the Gold Rush written by John Stuart Clark and published by Five Leaves Publications. This book was released on 2004 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1849, several hundred thousand Europeans and Americans trekked across the country for the gold fields of California - the Gold Rush being a defining moment in this country's short (European) history. John Clark followed the same historic roads and trails, retracing that journey through history. His travels took him through violent ghettos and even more violent hurricanes, desert sandstorms and blazing heat - cycling in areas where no sane person would choose to cycle. Along the way, Clark meets crazed war veterans, failing farmers, unemployed Mexican migrants, the washed up and those left over from the American Dream, which the Gold Rush had done so much to form. His journey also takes him through the wildest, the most beautiful and remotest parts of America. Part travelogue, part political history, all incredibly well-written.

Book Synopsis Re-riding History by : Curtiss Frank
Download or read book Re-riding History written by Curtiss Frank and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1970s, Curtiss Frank and Jack Underhill, a pair of mismatched thirty-somethings who had been chums since boyhood, decided to ride horeseback over the old Santa Fe Trail, or at least over a several-hundred-mile section of the far end of it. And the motive for the trip? Curtiss Frank says that reading the many firsthand accounts of the earliest trail travelers stirred up his blood and got him to wondering what it would be like to retrace the original pioneer route, with the aim of reliving the experience and also discovering what physical evidence of the past remained. As the author notes, other adventurers had recently undertaken the same journey, going by foot, horseback, or even wagon. But uniformly, they had used public roads, which today in many places are at a considerable distance from the original Santa Fe Trail. What Frank and Underhill proposed was to find the actual historical ruts and stay in them across private ranchland and open country, so as to make a faithful retracing of the authentic route followed by the nineteenth-century freight caravans. This is their story -- Back cover.
