Since startup of the reactors, oscilloscope traces have been used to record (by camera) the pulse (power) shape while log N systems have measured initial reactor period. Virtually no other pulse information is available. A decision was made to build a system that could collect the basic input data available from the reactor - fission chambers, photodiodes, and thermocouples - condition the signals and output the various parameters such as power, energy, temperature, period and lifetime on hard copy that would provide a record for operations personnel as well as the experimenter. Because the reactors operate in short time frames - pulse operation - it is convenient to utilize the classical Nordheim-Fuchs approximation of the diffusion equation to describe reactor behavior. This report describes the work performed to date in developing the calculator system and analytical models for computing the desired parameters.

Book excerpt: A wide variety of space-based system components have been qualified for use through neutron irradiation testing performed at the Sandia Pulsed Reactor (SPR) Facility. The SPR Facility is the operating location for two fast burst reactors, SPR II and SPR III, which have been used to induce neutron and gamma damage in electronic components and other materials for customers in the Department of Energy, Department of Defense, NASA, and the private sector. In addition to the pulse mode of operation, during which peak fluxes of up to lel9 n/cm2-s are achieved, the steady state mode allows for the long term irradiation of components and systems in a fast neutron environment at a flux of up to 5e11 n/cm2-s. The SPR reactors are operated in a 9.2 meter diameter exposure cell, or Kiva, suitable for the irradiation of large test articles external to the reactors. Currently, a new upgraded version of SPR Ill (SPR IIIM) is in fabrication; a unique feature of SPR IIIM is its 19 cm (usable diameter) central irradiation cavity, the largest of any US fast burst reactor. An improved cooling system permits continuous operation at power levels in excess of 20 kW{sub t}. The SPR Facility is also the operating site for a critical assembly which was used to characterize prototypic fuels in arrays appropriate for the Space Nuclear Thermal Propulsion Program. Work continues on use of the facility to design, build, and operate critical assemblies for a diverse customer base.

Book excerpt: Neutron flux measurements were made in the reactor building of the Sandia Pulsed Reactor Facility using threshold detectors for the neutrons with energies greater than 10 kev. Bare and cadmium-covered gold were used for measurement of the thermal neutron fluxes. Midplane measurements were made as a function of distance outward from the reactor vertical centerline in several different directions within the building. In addition, detailed measurements were made on a midplane traverse around the circumference and a vertical traverse from the base of the safety screen over the domed top and to the base on the opposite side. All measurements were free field'' in the sense that no spectrum-perturbing experiments were near the reactor during these measurements. The fluxes above 10 kev follow a (1/r)/sup 2/ attenuation, whereas the thermal fluxes show very little attenuation with distance. The reactor is, to a good approximation, a point isotropic neutron emitter. (auth).

Book excerpt: The Sandia Pulsed Reactor III (SPR III) is a fast-pulse research reactor which was designed and built at Sandia Laboratories and achieved criticality in August 1975. The reactor is now characterized and is in an operational configuration. The core consists of 18 fuel plates (258 kg fuel mass) of fully enriched uranium alloyed with 10 wt.% molybdenum. It is arranged in an annular configuration with an inside diameter of 17.78 cm, an outside diameter of 29.72 cm, and a height of 35.9 cm. The reactor core uses reflectors of copper and aluminum for control and an external bolting arrangement to secure the fuel plates. SPR III and SPR II are operated on an interchangeable basis using the same facility and control system. As of June 1977, SPR III has had over 240 operations with core temperatures up to 541°C.
