Book Synopsis When the Gospel Came to Superior by : Bernice Jarnagin
Download or read book When the Gospel Came to Superior written by Bernice Jarnagin and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-06-08 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WHEN THE GOSPEL CAME TO SUPERIOR is a first person record of the saga of the early ministry of Bernice Davis Jarnagin and Lucile Darrah Farmer. Without the commitment of these then young ladies to doing the will of God regardless of the cost, it is highly unlikely that those then living in such obscurity would have ever received a witness concerning the true gospel of Jesus Christ. As one reads this narrative, he will come to realize the depth of their dedication and commitment, willingness to endure physical hardship, sacrifice of many of the common amenities of life and not counting the cost while doing so. They counted it all joy to be doing the will of their Heavenly Father. While most would find little desirable about Superior, the reader will note that "beauty was in the eyes of the beholder" and the author found significant beauty in her natural surroundings while serving in the will of God. "Where Jesus is, 'tis heaven there." -Edwin E. Judd

Book Synopsis The Gospel of Climate Skepticism by : Robin Globus Veldman
Download or read book The Gospel of Climate Skepticism written by Robin Globus Veldman and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2019-10-22 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are white evangelicals the most skeptical major religious group in America regarding climate change? Previous scholarship has pointed to cognitive factors such as conservative politics, anti-science attitudes, aversion to big government, and theology. Drawing on qualitative fieldwork, The Gospel of Climate Skepticism reveals the extent to which climate skepticism and anti-environmentalism have in fact become embedded in the social world of many conservative evangelicals. Rejecting the common assumption that evangelicals’ skepticism is simply a side effect of political or theological conservatism, the book further shows that between 2006 and 2015, leaders and pundits associated with the Christian Right widely promoted skepticism as the biblical position on climate change. The Gospel of Climate Skepticism offers a compelling portrait of how during a critical period of recent history, political and religious interests intersected to prevent evangelicals from offering a unified voice in support of legislative action to address climate change.

Book Synopsis The Sagebrush Trail by : Richard Aquila
Download or read book The Sagebrush Trail written by Richard Aquila and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2015-04-16 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sagebrush Trail is a history of Western movies but also a history of twentieth-century America. Richard Aquila’s fast-paced narrative covers both the silent and sound eras, and includes classic westerns such as Stagecoach, A Fistful of Dollars, and Unforgiven, as well as B-Westerns that starred film cowboys like Tom Mix, Gene Autry, and Hopalong Cassidy. The book is divided into three parts. Part 1 traces the birth and growth of Westerns from 1900 through the end of World War II. Part 2 focuses on a transitional period in Western movie history during the two decades following World War II. Finally, part 3 shows how Western movies reflected the rapid political, social, and cultural changes that transformed America in the 1960s and the last decades of the twentieth century. The Sagebrush Trail explains how Westerns evolved throughout the twentieth century in response to changing times, and it provides new evidence and fresh interpretations about both Westerns and American history. These films offer perspectives on the past that historians might otherwise miss. They reveal how Americans reacted to political and social movements, war, and cultural change. The result is the definitive story of Western movies, which contributes to our understanding of not just movie history but also the mythic West and American history. Because of its subject matter and unique approach that blends movies and history, The Sagebrush Trail should appeal to anyone interested in Western movies, pop culture, the American West, and recent American history and culture. The mythic West beckons but eludes. Yet glimpses of its utopian potential can always be found, even if just for a few hours in the realm of Western movies. There on the silver screen, the mythic West continues to ride tall in the saddle along a “sagebrush trail” that reveals valuable clues about American life and thought.
Book Synopsis Archetypes and the Fourth Gospel by : Brian Larsen
Download or read book Archetypes and the Fourth Gospel written by Brian Larsen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-06-14 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Employing Northrop Frye's system of archetypal literary criticism - the use of romance, tragedy, irony and satire, and comedy - Brian Larsen offers a compelling summary of the essential governing framework and means of exchange between literature and theology. Characters in the Fourth Gospel are examined through a specific archetype, and, reciprocally, these characters illuminate and inform important theological aspects of their respective archetypes: Jesus and romance (hero story); Pilate and tragedy; the Jews and Thomas and irony; and Peter and comedy. This volume further clarifies the understanding of Frye's archetypesand identifies the key variable between each one: the relationship between (1) a belief or ideal and (2) experience or reality. Helping to advance dialogue between literature, biblical studies and theology, and providing insightful readings for a number of Fourth Gospel characters and texts, Larsen's examination will appeal to those seeking a new perspective on the themes of the New Testament or those seeking theological insights into literature.

Download or read book Post-Traumatic Public Theology written by Stephanie N. Arel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-02 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book imagines new modes of religious response to trauma, moving beyond simple answers to the ‘why’ of human suffering toward discussions of profound expressions of faith in the aftermath of trauma. Engaging current realities such as war, race, and climate change, chapters feature specific locations from which theology is done and draw on the resources of Christian faith in order to respond. This volume recognizes religious leaders as first-responders to trauma and offers theological reflections that can stand up in the current realities of violence and its aftermath. The writings provide models for how to integrate the language of faith with the literature of trauma.
