Book excerpt: Urban studies are comparatively a recent field of discipline, though cities and towns have been in existence for centuries. Very few scholars in India have shown interest in the study of the complex process of urbanisation in ancient India. The present study is primarily aimed at removing this desideratum. Here, apart from theoretical considerations, an attempt has been made to highlight the manifold manifestations of urbanisation in the past-a totally new field of ancient Indian studies. Answers have been sought for such questions as: What was the class structure of urbanism? What was the cultural milieu of different urban social groups? How did the emerging patterns of successive periods affects urban administration? The origin as well as the decline of towns has been fully discussed. The phase of de-urbanisation in the Gupta and post-Gupta times points to the emerging feudal formation. The monograph on the whole reflects a recent perspective in enquiries of historians of ancient India.

Download or read book Urban Decay in India, C. 300-c. 1000 written by Ram Sharan Sharma and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrations: 2 maps and 23 line drawings Description: The book focuses on the decline of the towns and their desertion in late ancient and early medieval India on the basis of archaeological evidence. The author has material remains to study crafts, commerce and coinage, and identifies and illustrates signs of growth and decay for more than 130 excavated sites. The strata with poor remains are taken to indicate decrease in construction, manufacturing and commercial activities, and are hence associated with de-urbanization. The reasons for the urban eclipse are sought not only in the fall of empires but also in social disorder and the loss of long-distance trade. The disintegration of the town life is seen not as social regression but as part of the social transformation which generated classical feudalism and promoted rural expansion. The book explores the link between urban decay and land grants to officials, priests, temples and monasteries. It shows how the landed elements collected surplus and services directly from the peasants, and remunerated artisan servicing castes through land grants and grain supply. The monograph should interest students of pre-modern urban history and those who study processes of change in economy and society in Gupta and post-Gupta times. It may also provide basic information on the urban horizons of excavated sites during the second half of the first millennium BC and the following six centuries AD.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses urban planning and regional development practices in the twentieth century, and ways in which they are currently being transformed. It addresses questions such as: What are the factors affecting planning dynamics at local, regional, national and global scales? With the push to adopt a market paradigm in land development and infrastructure, the relationship between resource management, sustainable development and the role of governance has been transformed. Centralized planning is giving way to privatization, not only in the traditional regions but also in newly emerging regions of Asia, Africa and Latin America. Further, attempts are being made to bring planning related decision-making closer to the people who are most affected by it. Presenting a collection of studies from scholars around the world and highlighting recent advances in the field, the book is a valuable reference guide for those engaged in urban transformations, whether as graduate students, researchers, practitioners or policymakers.
