Book excerpt: The job is dead in the water. One bolt, often the last, seized solid. You thought you'd finish in a day, but this has occupied your entire afternoon. You're cold, tired, bruised and frustrated. For me, it was a seized brake on my wife's hatchback. We didn't have the money for a garage bill, let alone a tow truck to take it there. I had to fix it, or sell at a loss. Then I'd have to face the second-hand car market and open a fresh can of worms. Road level components have a harsh life. Constantly caked with dust, mud, grit and road salt while exposed to water and enormous temperature changes. I'd bought a longer spanner (wrench), but I couldn't use the ring end because it fouled on other parts. All I'd done with the open crescent was remove 4 of the 6 corners from the bolt head. I had one chance left... No pressure. It was a toss-up between the pub and the Internet. Fortunately for me, I chose Internet. Use a long lever and a heavy friend: been there, and didn't need the friend! Heat was a non-starter because of brake pipes and ABS wires. Use an impact wrench? There was no room for a socket. Several searches later, several pages down, I found an interesting answer, and it worked. That got me thinking. I'd written a couple of books in crowded genres, and sales had been poor. Was there a book of tips, tricks and tools to free nuts, bolts and screws? There was not. So I wrote this one. The research was an absolute joy. New tool designs reduce the chance of damage to nuts, bolt heads and screws. If things go wrong, there are clever tools to engage rounded off or gouged out heads. There are even special tools and techniques to extract sheared shafts and repair damaged threads. Finally, were myths to bust, poor advice to filter out, and misunderstandings to clarify. This was all music to the ears of a non-fiction writer. So it's all in here, organised for quick reference. It opens with a process which works in order of increasing aggression to lessen risk to you and whatever you're fixing. Reuse more original, possibly rare or even irreplaceable, parts and panels. Avoid delays waiting for replacement parts and save some money into the bargain. What was it that freed the bolt from my wife's car? I won't be cruel and tell you to buy my book to find out. It was a freeze spray. They shrink the fastener, cracking the rust. This creates a sliver of space for the lubricant in the spray to seep into. I didn't know such a thing existed until adversity taught me. I wish you luck fixing whatever brought you here - happy trails! Chas Newport, Somerset, UK. Autumn 2021

Book excerpt: If you enjoy a bit of DIY in the home or you maintain your own car, caravan, RV, motorbike or bicycle you will, sooner or later, come across something so rusty you think it's welded in place. You dangle from the longest spanner you own, maybe cheating a bit with a length of tube over the end and... SNAP! You have a sheared off shaft in a hole... The aim of this book is to provide you with a way to solve the first problem while minimising the probability of the second. It walks you through a series of complementary techniques to clean and free the problem fastener with the minimum effort, risk and damage. Even if you already have a sheared stump to deal with we have techniques for that too.

Book excerpt: It is amazing to think that time has passed by and that the second BMW "3 Series" has achieved such status that it warrants this special book on its 21st anniversary. Maybe it is due to the sheer longevity of its design, its ability to satisfy the keen driver or its iconic status - but, whatever it is, there is no doubt that the E30 is one car from the past that will stay with us into the future. It is a pending classic and prices for well kept models have started to escalate; furthermore, there is a core of well cared for cars out there requiring basic attention by their dedicated owners. As a result, there has never been a better time for a book of this sort. By focusing on the common faults which crop up repeatedly and by giving detailed, simple instructions regarding repairs, this book will be uniquely invaluable for owners who wish to try their hand at their own maintenance, especially those who may previously have been prevented from doing so by a lack of technical know-how or specific knowledge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller • Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize • An Oprah's Book Club Selection “Powerful . . . [Kingsolver] has with infinitely steady hands worked the prickly threads of religion, politics, race, sin and redemption into a thing of terrible beauty.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review The Poisonwood Bible, now celebrating its 25th anniversary, established Barbara Kingsolver as one of the most thoughtful and daring of modern writers. Taking its place alongside the classic works of postcolonial literature, it is a suspenseful epic of one family's tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in Africa. The story is told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it—from garden seeds to Scripture—is calamitously transformed on African soil. The novel is set against one of the most dramatic political chronicles of the twentieth century: the Congo's fight for independence from Belgium, the murder of its first elected prime minister, the CIA coup to install his replacement, and the insidious progress of a world economic order that robs the fledgling African nation of its autonomy. Against this backdrop, Orleanna Price reconstructs the story of her evangelist husband's part in the Western assault on Africa, a tale indelibly darkened by her own losses and unanswerable questions about her own culpability. Also narrating the story, by turns, are her four daughters—the teenaged Rachel; adolescent twins Leah and Adah; and Ruth May, a prescient five-year-old. These sharply observant girls, who arrive in the Congo with racial preconceptions forged in 1950s Georgia, will be marked in surprisingly different ways by their father's intractable mission, and by Africa itself. Ultimately each must strike her own separate path to salvation. Their passionately intertwined stories become a compelling exploration of moral risk and personal responsibility.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How many souls have you won to Christ? How many are still walking with the Lord? All, some, a few? The facts are: Evangelical success is at an all-time low. We’re producing more backsliders than true converts. The fall-away rate—from large crusades to local churches—is between 80 to 90 percent. Why are so many unbelievers turning away from the message of the gospel? Doesn’t the Bible tell us how to bring sinners to true repentance? If so, where have we missed it? The answer may surprise you. One hundred years ago, Satan buried the crucial key needed to unlock the unbeliever’s heart. Now Ray Comfort boldly breaks away from modern tradition and calls for a return to biblical evangelism. If you’re experiencing evangelical frustration over lost souls, unrepentant sinners, and backslidden “believers,” then look no further. This radical approach could be the missing dimension needed to win our generation to Christ.

James Morrow, “the most provocative satiric voice in science fiction,” unabashedly delves into matters both sacred and secular in this collection of short stories buoyed by his deliciously irreverent wit (The Washington Post). Among the dozen selections is the Nebula Award–winning story, “The Deluge,” in which a woman of ill repute is rescued by the crew of the ark, who must deal with the consequences of their misguided act of mercy. Also included is a follow-up to the Tower of Babel fable, an unprecedented nativity, and an attempt to stand so-called creation science on its head. Nothing is spared in a collection that “deliciously skewer[s] not only Judeo-Christian mythology but other sacred cows of modern society, from capitalism to New Age spiritualism” (Booklist). “Morrow’s is a blend of parody and commentary which challenges readers to reflect upon the human spiritual condition.” —Midwest Book Review

Book excerpt: The most comprehensive account available of Michael Heizer's art by a writer and curator who has critical experience with the artist and his work. Michael Heizer is among the greatest, and often least accessible, American artists. As one of the last living figures who launched the Land Art movement, his legacy of works that are literally and metaphorically monumental has an incalculable influence on the world of sculpture and environmental art. But his seclusion in the remote Nevada desert, as well as his notorious obduracy, have resulted in significant gaps in our critical understanding. Michael Heizer: The Once and Future Monuments spans the breadth of Heizer's career, uniquely combining fieldwork, personal narrative, and biographical research to create the first major assessment in years of this titan of American art. Author William L. Fox, founding director of the Center for Art + Environment at the Nevada Museum of Art, has alternately been a sponsor, advocate, and critic of Heizer's work for decades. Fox's understanding of the artist's history and connection to landscape, his time spent with Heizer at the remote ranch where Heizer is finishing his magnum opus--the mile-long sculpture City--and his access to some of Heizer's key associates give him a unique position from which to discuss the artist's work. Fox has also made numerous site visits to Heizer's work--including early pieces in the Nevada desert now largely lost to the elements--to correct the often inconsistent accounts of their locations. Last, Fox imparts a crucial new understanding of Heizer's work by elaborating on the artist's bond with his father, the famed archaeologist and cultural ecologist Robert Heizer, who enlisted his son on important digs in Mexico and Peru, providing the young man with an appreciation of site, landscape, and geology that would thoroughly inform his work. Michael Heizer: The Once and Future Monuments is a long overdue addition to the critical and biographical literature of this major figure in American art.
