Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1919, at the height of the anti-leftist Palmer Raids conducted by the Wilson administration, the anarchist activist and writer Emma Goldman was deported to the nascent Soviet Union. Despite initial plans to fight the deportation order in court, Goldman eventually acquiesced in order to take part in the new revolutionary Russia herself. While initially supportive of the Bolsheviks, with some reservations, Goldman’s firsthand experiences with Bolshevik oppression and corruption prompted her titular disillusionment and eventual emigration to Germany. In My Disillusionment in Russia, Goldman records her travels throughout Russia as part of a revolutionary museum commission, and her interactions with a variety of political and literary figures like Vladimir Lenin, Maxim Gorky, John Reed, and Peter Kropotkin. Goldman concludes her account with a critique of the Bolshevik ideology in which she asserts that revolutionary change in institutions cannot take place without corresponding changes in values. My Disillusionment in Russia had a troubled publication history, since the first American printing in 1923 omitted the last twelve chapters of what was supposed to be a thirty-three chapter book. (Somehow, the last chapters failed to reach the publisher, who did not suspect the book to be incomplete.) The situation was remedied with the publication of the remaining chapters in 1924 as part of a volume titled My Further Disillusionment in Russia. This Standard Ebooks edition compiles both volumes into a single volume, following the intent of the original manuscript. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

The peoples of the West are uneasy about the Communist experiment, accompanied as it is by a forced implanting of atheism such as the world has never yet known - an experiment carried on in a vast country which is little known to, and little understood by, the West. What must be of great interest is the psycholo gical problem How was it possible for Holy Russia to be turned into an arsenal of militant atheism? How is it that a people who are religious by their very structure and live exclu sively by faith have proved to be such a fruitful field for anti-religious propaganda To explain that, to understand Russian anti-religious psy chology, one must have an insight into the religious psychology of the Russian people. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russian Political Thought: A Concise History Were feasible, it would hardly be worth while, for the residue of peculiarly Russian thoughts would probably be very small and would almost certainly be confined to minor points. The main problems of political life are by their very nature such that they are either universal or at least relevant for more than one people, and particular ways of approaching these problems are seldom confined to one country. It is more sensible to define Russian political thought as the sum total of what Russian people have in fact thought about political matters in the course of their history. Most of this Russia would share with some other coun tries, and for a better understanding both of the development of Russian thought itself and of its place in the political thought of mankind it is useful to put it into the context of a wider body of thought. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russian Politics This book attempts to put the English reader in a position to understand the conditions of life and the problems of government that exist in the Russia of to day. Some knowledge of the aspects of the country, the ethnological descent of its inhabitants, and the story of the rise and maintenance of their autocratic form of government, seems necessary as a preliminary to such understanding, and the first three chapters of the volume are devoted to an exposition of these matters; but since modern political life is the subject of the book, they have not been allowed to expand into greater detail than will be helpful to the object in View. The reforms of the early years of Alexander II. Have been treated much more fully, for almost all the political questions of the day in Russia are intimately connected with them and with their subsequent partial abrogation witnessed during the reactionary period of the last quarter of a century. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birth of the Russian Democracy Russia that volumes are written with the special purpose of proving that there is a Ukrainian culture in existence. The Ukrainians are justly proud of their great poet, Shevchenko, but the Great Russians love him and consider him their own. On the other hand, the greatest writers of the Ukrainian nationality, Gogol and Korolenko, wrote in Russian and will live forever in the history of Russian literature and culture. The beauty and the power of Russia's culture may be best illustrated by the fact that it drew to itself even nationalities far distant from the Russian in their historical and cultural traditions. From this point of view, of special interest are the Jewish and the Caucasian problems, as cultural problems in Russia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Siberia to-Day The attitude of mind with which a writer approaches his subject is the core of his book. My purpose in recording my observations and impressions while serving in Siberia is to tell such citizens of the United States as may be interested some of the things they may want to know about the Siberians. This is not a "war book," nor an account of thrilling deeds, nor a history of our expedition in Siberia, but a book in which I have attempted to bring to the public a realization of the difficulties under which our officers and men performed, and perform, their duties in that land. These difficulties are partly inherent in the Siberians themselves, partly the result of the chaos following the Russian revolution and Bolshevism, and partly the result of a lack of policy for Siberia on our part. The people of the United States undoubtedly feel sympathy for all Russia, and desire to aid it in some way; President Wilson, we all know, burdened with the world war's problems, seeks a solution of the Russian situation which will give the people of Russia the fullest possible means of attaining national liberty.
