Book Synopsis The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám by : David Ramsey
Download or read book The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám written by David Ramsey and published by Borgo Press. This book was released on 2013-04 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Ramsey's reinterpretation of the Edward FitzGerald English-language version of the classic Omar Khayyam poem, The Rubaiyat, began with his displeasure of the oft-quoted verse: "Here with a loaf of Bread Beneath..." The author says: "I thought this sounded more Victorian than Persian. I think Omar meant something more like this: 'With a book of verse beneath the bough...' For my own amusement I then proceeded to deflower other of Fitzgerald's translations of Khayyam's poetry. The challenge was to make suitable alternatives to those famous verses that have made The Rubaiyat one of the best-known works of poetry in the English language. One might say that I plagiarized the author, or his principal translator, or both--but I consider this more as an unholy collaboration between the three of us over the centuries. I hope my two unwitting collaborators would not be displeased with my reinterpretation of their efforts." Ramsey's irreverent verses are amusing, full of philosophical wit, and very relevant indeed to today's free-swinging culture. Great reading! Great fun!
Book Synopsis Resetting the Stage by : Dragon Klaic
Download or read book Resetting the Stage written by Dragon Klaic and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commercial theatre is thriving across Europe and the UK, while public theatre has suffered under changing patterns of cultural consumption--as well as sharp reductions in government subsidies for the arts. At a time when the rationale behind these subsidies is being widely reexamined, it has never been more important for public theatre to demonstrate its continued merit. In Resetting the Stage, Dragan Klaic argues convincingly that, in an increasingly crowded market of cultural goods, public theatre is best served not by imitating its much larger commercial counterpart, but by asserting its artistic distinctiveness and the considerable benefit this confers on the public.

Book Synopsis Chinese Central Asia by : Sir Clarmont Percival Skrine
Download or read book Chinese Central Asia written by Sir Clarmont Percival Skrine and published by . This book was released on 1926 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chinese Central Asia written in the 1920s is an interesting travelogue of the journey undertaken overland to Chinese Turkistan through the Karakoram Mountains and Passes, by C P Skrine the then British Consular General to Chinese Turkistan. Our journey starts in dusty Quetta on the borders of Iran. It is a story of the times when the main form of travel was on horse back or on foot. The luxury of road or air travel was not available to those who wished to travel to the more out-of-the-way regions of the world at that time. This opportunity to travel was so inviting to both the author and his wife that he jumped at the chance to visit this region. The author leaves no stone unturned to complete his tour and to give us a vivid description of his travels in this remote region. In his introduction Younghusband makes a very pertinent statement when he says that our impression of the unchanging belief in the unchangeable east is shattered by the bowler hatted Chinese representative who meets our travellers. Our author takes us to many places in his journey and each step gives us a vivid idea of the vistas and ways of the people of that time. His travels awake an interest in all of us who have the wanderlust and a desire to visit distant places in this world.

Book Synopsis The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám by : Omar Khayyam
Download or read book The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám written by Omar Khayyam and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-02-20 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This deluxe, full color edition of the Rubiyt contains the original and acclaimed illustrations by Edmund Dulac, plus the first and fifth editions of the text. The Rubiyt of Omar Khayym attained fame when it was translated and introduced to a Western audience by the author and poet Edward Fitzgerald. Selected for their lyrical beauty, the poems within the Rubiyt are attributed to the Persian mathematician and astronomer Omar Khayym. Writing in the eleventh century, Khayym was revered as a master of the poetic form, and his works have since been much-quoted by artists and admirers. The collection received its name from the word ruba'i, which connotes a two-line stanza comprised of two parts. These quatrains are the way in which the entire collection is written. The first edition contains 75 quatrains, while the later, revised edition has 101. Additionally, the fifth edition appended a series of notes explaining the meaning behind various portions of the text. Over his lifetime, Edward Fitzgerald produced several revisions of his original 1859 translation. Scholars have since come to regard Fitzgerald's effort as containing some of his own poetic input; aspects of the original verses are paraphrased or exchanged with the English poet's own. However, the beauty and succinctness present in many of these verses led to the collection retaining its status as the classic, definitive version - sometimes nicknamed as the 'Rubiyt of FitzOmar'. The intricate and beautiful illustrations of Edmund Dulac, which were first appended to the text in 1909, are in this edition reproduced in full color.

Book excerpt: "A Flask of Wine, a Book of Verse — and Thou, Beside me, singing in the Wilderness," is only one of the memorable verses from Edward FitzGerald's translations of poems by the 11th century Persian sage Omar Khayyám. This magnificent version of The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám reproduces the edition published by Hodder & Stoughton of London in 1909, in which the timeless poems are accompanied by full-color images by Golden Age illustrator Edmund Dulac. Critics and collectors have long debated which book represents the peak of Dulac's career, and many agree that his affinity for Persian art makes this gloriously illustrated volume a strong contender.
