Book excerpt: Hypnotism, although a debatable issue, remains an interesting art. Those who have an expertise in this field, claim to have the ability to exercise amazing control over mind and matter through it.We all fancy at times to create things at our will, or make others do things according to our wish.Mostly, however, it remains a wishful thinking. But with the knowledge and understanding of hypnotism you can really do it. Worldwide hypnotism has been accepted as a part of para-science, and scientists have done a lot of research to explain this phenomenon.Unfortunately it is still clouded in mystery as far as most people are concerned. Therefore, the author has presented in this book very selected material to familiarise the readers with the basics of this art. With easy-to-do exercises, the readers of this book can become amateur hypnotists, provided they follow the instructions honestly. the chapters on the history of hypnotism and development are intended to provide the reader a clear perspective of the field. There are a number of chapters dealing with study of behaviour, diagnosis, assessment and testing which will enable the reader to evaluate the cases. It remains one of the best books for those who wish to learn the art of hypnotism step-by-step, and desire to practise it.

Book excerpt: This thorough revision of the first edition, updates and expands, with 25 percent new material, what was generally recognized as a major survey of contemporary scientific research in hypnosis. In this edition, also a classic, the editors include three new essays in modern hypnosis studies. They also provide a new conceptual framework--cognitive, ego-psychological, and phenomenological--with which to examine hypnosis. This edition is divided into six sections--Theoretical and Historical Perspectives, New Theories, Surveys of Broad Areas, Lines of Individual Research, Individual Researches within Specific Areas, and Anticipations for Future Research. The entire book was completely revised in the light of additional research since publication of the original edition. Thirteen of the twenty chapters in the first edition were updated by their authors, six so extensively that they amount to new chapters, with changes in title and order of authors in the case of coauthored chapters. Hypnosis: Developments in Research and New Perspectives is intended for researchers in hypnosis and clinical practitioners in medicine and psychology. The focus, as indicated by the changed subtitle, is on developments since publication of the original editions: empirical studies, experiments with physiological indicators of hypnosis, and theoretical uses associated with use of hypnosis as a research tool. Altogether, this second edition is a valuable overall guide to an intriguing topic.

Book excerpt: Jill Matus explores shock in Victorian fiction and psychology with startling results that reconfigure the history of trauma theory. Central to Victorian thinking about consciousness and emotion, shock is a concept that challenged earlier ideas about the relationship between mind and body. Although the new materialist psychology of the mid-nineteenth century made possible the very concept of a wound to the psyche - the recognition, for example, that those who escaped physically unscathed from train crashes or other overwhelming experiences might still have been injured in some significant way - it was Victorian fiction, with its complex explorations of the inner life of the individual and accounts of upheavals in personal identity, that most fully articulated the idea of the haunted, possessed and traumatized subject. This wide-ranging book reshapes our understanding of Victorian theories of mind and memory and reveals the relevance of nineteenth-century culture to contemporary theories of trauma.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 9th International Congress of Hypnosis and Psychosomatic Medicine expresses the continuity in the effort to gain scientific knowledge of hypnosis and scientific status for it, ever since the 1st International Congress for Experimental and Therapeutic Hypnotism was held in Paris in 1889, attended by many of the best-remembered psychiatrists and psychologists of the day - men such as Babinski, Bernheim, Binet, Delboeuf, Freud, James, Lombroso, F. W. H. Myers, Ribot, and many others. The continuity was broken by the period of reduced interest in hypnosis between the time of the 2nd Inter national Congress for Hypnotism in Paris in 1900, and the revival of interest shown by the 3rd International Congress for Hypnosis and Psychosomatic Medicine in Paris in 1965. Since then, the Congresses have met more regularly, making the one of which this is the report, the 9th. The programs of these Congresses have become increasingly rich through the years, with many of the older problems still with us but now studied more dispassionately in the light of new knowledge and new scientific methods in the design of investigations and the vali dation of scientific findings.

Book excerpt: The Sunday Times Bestseller 'Really brilliant and just crammed with wisdom and insight. It will genuinely make a difference to me and the way I think about myself.' Stephen Fry ___ Everyone says they want to be happy. But that's much more easily said than done. What does being happy actually mean? And how do you even know when you feel it? In Happy Derren Brown explores changing concepts of happiness - from the surprisingly modern wisdom of the Stoics and Epicureans in classical times right up until today, when the self-help industry has attempted to claim happiness as its own. He shows how many of self-help's suggested routes to happiness and success - such as positive thinking, self-belief and setting goals - can be disastrous to follow and, indeed, actually cause anxiety. Happy aims to reclaim happiness and to enable us to appreciate the good things in life, in all their transient glory. By taking control of the stories we tell ourselves, by remembering that 'everything's fine' even when it might not feel that way, we can allow ourselves to flourish and to live more happily. ___ What readers are saying: ***** 'Immensely positive and life-affirming' ***** 'This is the blue print to a good life' ***** 'Thought provoking and potentially life-changing.'
