Book Synopsis The Making of a Disciple by : Edward W. Watson
Download or read book The Making of a Disciple written by Edward W. Watson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-09-02 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern readers sometimes view the Gospels and other biblical narratives as mere historical accounts of events that occurred long ago. Biblical narratives, however, are intended to do far more than teach us history. They are intended to change how we think and how we live. In The Making of a Disciple, Watson and Culy use insights from narrative criticism to show that the message of the Gospel of John is communicated not only through the teachings and deeds of Jesus, but also through the actions of the other main characters and the consequences of their actions. As readers observe characters interacting with Jesus, they are implicitly encouraged to either emulate or avoid their behavior. Coupled with the teachings and acts of Jesus, these characters serve as potent tools in the Gospel of John to showcase what it looks like not only to become a disciple of Jesus but also to grow to maturity and experience the fullness of joy that Jesus offers.
Book Synopsis Matthew, Disciple and Scribe by : Patrick Schreiner
Download or read book Matthew, Disciple and Scribe written by Patrick Schreiner and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2019-09-03 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fresh look at the Gospel of Matthew highlights the unique contribution that Matthew's rich and multilayered portrait of Jesus makes to understanding the connection between the Old and New Testaments. Patrick Schreiner argues that Matthew obeyed the Great Commission by acting as scribe to his teacher Jesus in order to share Jesus's life and work with the world, thereby making disciples of future generations. The First Gospel presents Jesus's life as the fulfillment of the Old Testament story of Israel and shows how Jesus brings new life in the New Testament.

Book Synopsis The Life of Mashtots' by his Disciple Koriwn by : Abraham Terian
Download or read book The Life of Mashtots' by his Disciple Koriwn written by Abraham Terian and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-10-31 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Life of Mashtots' is mostly praise for the inventor of the Armenian alphabet--the only inventor of an ancient alphabet known by name--and progenitor of Armenian literacy that began with the translation of the Bible. Written three years after his death, by an early disciple named Koriwn, it narrates the master's endeavors in search for letters, the establishment of schools, and the ensuing literary activity that yielded countless translations of religious texts known in the Early Church of the East. As an encomium from Late Antiquity, The Life of Mashtots' exhibits all the literary features of the genre to which it belongs, delineated through rhetorical analysis by Abraham Terian, who comments on the entire document almost phrase by phrase. Translated from the latest Armenian edition of the text (2003), this edition of The Life of Mashtots' includes a facing English translation and commentary. The extraordinary narrative parades historical characters including the Patriarch of the Armenian Church, Catholicos Sahak (d. 439), the Arsacid King of Armenia, Vramshapuh (r. 401-417), and the Roman Emperor of the East, Theodosius II (r. 408-450). Koriwn is an eminently inspiring rhetorical writer and one of the first four authors known to write in the newly invented script. The marked influence of The Life of Mashtots' is discernible in subsequent Armenian writings of the fifth century, dubbed 'The Golden Era'.
Book Synopsis Disciple's Diary by : Cinthia W. Pratt
Download or read book Disciple's Diary written by Cinthia W. Pratt and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2012-08 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disciples Diary is the second book in Cindees series written for women journeying to become all that God has created them to be. This edition is a collection of poems, devotional teachings, and reflective narrative, intended to encourage and to provoke thought in those discipled daughters; who may discover that they are now traveling across terrain much like the territories that the heroine in the story crosses. Her Valley of Shadows may be found sitting at the bedside of a terminally ill loved one. Her Wide Wilderness of Want may appear in the form of a bankruptcy or through the loss of a business or a home. Divorce-court proceedings may compose the walls of the dark pit of loneliness, in which the disciple daughter now sits trapped as she watches the fogs of confusion and doubt begin to roll in overhead. A rebellious child, an unfaithful spouse, and seemingly countless unanswered prayers may all contribute to the tangled briers and twisted branches of the wilderness thicket that blocks the suns warmth and light from the path on which the present-day sojourner now travels. Such is the terrain that might be traced on the map of a modern-day disciple daughter. Fearfully Female and Wonderfully Woman: Becoming All That God Created is the first book in Cindee's series and is designed to be a navigational guide for Christian women of all ages and backgrounds. While Disciples Diary is designed as a devotional collection; this book is more informational in format. Topics addressed in this study include body image, self -esteem, developing healthy friendships, growing old in a youth oriented culture, developing our spiritual gifts, and finding our place of ministry. Fearfully Female and Wonderfully Woman would be a valuable reference tool as well as a guide for individual or small group study. http://bookstore.westbowpress.com/Products/SKU-000466986/Fearfully-Female-and-Wonderfully-Woman.aspx
