One of the most interesting and instructive would be the study of Nehemiah. He is one of the great leaders in the Bible and is one of the great leaders in all of history. In this project, we will explore leadership lessons gleaned from his own personal journal and focus on the first seven chapters of the book that bears his name. Additionally, I will reference quotes and other scripture to reinforce the lesson. I summarize each chapter with Nehemiah’s “Master Builder Principles.” Nehemiah was a master builder. He built a wall around Jerusalem in just fifty-two days, when others apparently could not. He built the Jews’ confidence. He built progress. He built a strong and positive culture. He built relationships. He built his positive reputation. He built a phenomenal legacy. He built an example for all to emulate. I love the study of leadership, have been doing it for 33+ years, and expect to do it my whole life. Leadership fascinates me and the more I study it the more I validate how critical it is to teams, organizations, our nation, and our church. My life’s purpose is to Positively Influence Lives. This is done primarily through leadership. My measure of success with this project is expose readers to God’s Word, expose readers to some leadership lessons, and enable readers to build upon their leadership knowledge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year that will forever be known as 2020 has brought new words to our world: Covid-19, Corona Virus, and Essential Workers. One day we're dropping off the kids at school on the way to work at the office; the next day we're told you're now working from home to keep everyone safe and the dining room became the make shift classroom. Perhaps other than World War II, no other time in history has the focus been on essential workers, focus that would normally be reserved for athletes and movie stars was shifted to doctors, nurses, teachers, transportation workers, baristas, you name it. People and jobs that have been serving us for years, helping keep life running day-in and day-out are finally receiving the attention they deserve. One day you're a delivery driver and the next day you're the key to help people survive. Sounds very familiar to the story of Nehemiah. While many may know Nehemiah as the guy who helped build the wall, what most may not know he was just a simple servant. One day he was polishing the King's silver and the next day he becomes the savior for an entire nation. One simple cupbearer became the person who helped change history. The lessons we can learn from Nehemiah transcends history, occupations, race, religion, etc. These are lessons that can be applied in the office, the classroom, the family room, even a Zoom call. The story of Nehemiah gives us a glimpse to look at our own lives and an opportunity learn from history. While this book is based upon the Old Testament Book of Nehemiah, the leadership principles pulled from the life of Nehemiah can apply to believers, non-believers and even people who have never read the Bible. Nehemiah reminds us we have a Creator who loves us and never forgets about us. He uses normal everyday people to write history. Heroes are found next door, in the classroom, all around us, even in the mirror. Often when we read history we forget that the people we're reading about are just like us, normal everyday people who take a step of faith. The lessons we can learn from Nehemiah can help all of us take those steps in every aspect of our lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do others look to you for leadership? Do you face a major task or shoulder heavy responsibilities? Do you want to take your leadership skills to a higher level? When Nehemiah confronted the task of rebuilding Jerusalem's wall, he was heartbroken by the damage he saw and nearly overwhelmed by the task that lay before him. Yet through the application of timeless leadership principles, Nehemiah completed this nearly impossible project, and laid a pattern for success which is just as valid for us today. Charles Swindoll brings his sensible and straightforward style to offer a deeply spiritual approach to the role of leader. Whatever the context, secular or ministerial, he demonstrates how to size up a task, organize and motivate a team, and respond to inevitable obstacles such as these: Unforeseen setbacks Unrelenting deadlines Criticism and outside resistance Personality conflicts Financial pressures and temptations The insights that Swindoll draws from Nehemiah's wise administration will change your approach to leadership forever.

Although he was not a famous Jewish prophet, scribe, or known leader, he was able to rebuild the torn down and burnt walls of Jerusalem in fifty-two days. Facing all kinds of opposition and internal turmoil, Nehemiah's leadership was unequalled. This study outlines his sterling leadership and life lessons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two leaders, one burning mission: restoration. When the people of Israel returned to Jerusalem after their exile in Babylon, they found the city laid waste, the temple destroyed, and their way of life obliterated. Out of the ashes of this devastation, two leaders emerged to restore the foundations of their worship and their city. Ezra, the first to return, set out to restore true worship in Jerusalem by reminding the people of God’s teaching, what it meant for them, and how it should shape their lives. Nehemiah, the next to arrive, exchanged his royal cupbearer's robes for coveralls and got to work rebuilding the wall. The project took twelve years and was an uphill battle all the way. The efforts of these men reveal just how much God can accomplish in our lives when we follow where he leads. As you read, study, journal, and discuss the books of Ezra and Nehemiah, watch for these key themes that Max will unpack throughout the book: When the Hebrews were allowed to return home their spiritual restoration was as important as their national restoration. Restoring the temple was a significant step in the spiritual restoration of the people. The idolatry of the Hebrews was rooted in foreign wives who continued to worship their false gods. This is why the men were asked to divorce their foreign wives. The Life Lessons with Max Lucado series brings the Bible to life in twelve lessons filled with intriguing questions, inspirational stories, and poignant reflections to take you deeper into God's Word. Each lesson includes: An opening reflection on the Bible book you're studying. Background information to deepen your understanding of the cultural and historical setting. An excerpt of the text (from the NIV and the NKJV). Exploration questions with plenty of room to write your own thoughts and notes. Inspirational thoughts from Max as well as a closing takeaway for further reflection. The Life Lessons series is ideal for use in both a small-group setting or for individual study.

Book excerpt: He was one of the most popular lay preachers and Christian apologists of his day: Sir Robert Anderson devoutly believed that the Bible was the inerrant word of God, and in this popular 1881 book-a companion to his Daniel in the Critics' Den-he mounts a defense of the prophetic Old Testament Book of Daniel, an early example of apocalyptic philosophy in Christianity. Students of the Bible will appreciate this historically valuable attempt to set straight the many controversies surrounding Daniel regarding its authorship and even the date of its writing. And anyone interested in the apocalyptic fervor of modern-day fundamentalist Christianity will find this an instructive and enlightening read. While at Scotland Yard, Irish police official and religious scholar SIR ROBERT ANDERSON (1841-1918) helped investigate the Jack the Ripper murders, but he is best remembered for his works of Bible study, including Forgotten Truths and The Silence of God.

Book excerpt: The Knowing the Bible series is a resource designed to help Bible readers better understand and apply God's Word. These 12-week studies lead participants through books of the Bible and are made up of four basic components: (1) reflection questions help readers engage the text at a deeper level; (2) "Gospel Glimpses" highlight the gospel of grace throughout the book; (3) "Whole-Bible Connections" show how any given passage connects to the Bible's overarching story of redemption, culminating in Christ; and (4) "Theological Soundings" identify how historic orthodox doctrines are taught or reinforced throughout Scripture. With contributions from an array of influential pastors and church leaders, these gospel-centered studies will help Christians see and cherish the message of God's grace on every page of the Bible. The books of Ezra and Nehemiah tell of God's steadfast love toward Israel after their return from exile. The Lord rasied up Ezra and Nehemiah to reestablish the nation by rebuilding the temple and city walls and by turning the people back to his Word. In this 12-week study, Kathleen Nielson shows readers God's mercy and faithfulness demonstrated in the books of Ezra and Nehemiah, encouraging Christians toward sincere repentance and persevering hope. Part of the Knowing the Bible series.
