Book Synopsis Denys Lasdun's Royal College of Physicians by : Barnabas Calder

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Royal College of Physicians in Regent's Park is considered one of the finest 20th Century buildings in London, and architect Denys Lasdun's most successful creation. This beautifully illustrated book describes the building in two parts. The first tells the story of how Lasdun approached the design and building of the College. In accepting the commission, he faced two potentially conflicting demands: to create a radical piece of modern architecture that would also serve as a setting for the centuries-old rituals of College life. The second part is a guide to key areas and rooms of the College, illustrating the remarkable details of its fine design. The book explores the extraordinary ceremonial and functional spaces within the College, alongside Lasdun's struggle and eventual triumph in incorporating these with his own distinctive vision through feats of engineering and lavish materials - the result is a gripping tale.

Book Synopsis Medicine, Magic and Religion by : W.H.R. Rivers
Download or read book Medicine, Magic and Religion written by W.H.R. Rivers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most fascinating men of his generation, W.H.R. Rivers was a British doctor and psychiatrist as well as a leading ethnologist. Immortalized as the hero of Pat Barker's award-winning Regeneration trilogy, Rivers was the clinician who, in the First World War, cared for the poet Siegfried Sassoon and other infantry officers injured on the western front. His researches into the borders of psychiatry, medicine and religion made him a prominent member of the British intelligentsia of the time, a friend of H.G. Wells, George Bernard Shaw and Bertrand Russell. Part of his appeal lay in an extraordinary intellect, mixed with a very real interest in his fellow man. Medicine, Magic and Religion is a prime example of this. A social institution, it is one of Rivers' finest works. In it, Rivers introduced the then revolutionary idea that indigenous practices are indeed rational, when viewed in terms of religious beliefs.

Book Synopsis The Royal Doctors, 1485-1714 by : Elizabeth Lane Furdell
Download or read book The Royal Doctors, 1485-1714 written by Elizabeth Lane Furdell and published by University Rochester Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing upon a myriad of primary and secondary historical sources, The Royal Doctors: Medical Personnel at the Tudor and Stuart Courts investigates the influential individuals who attended England's most important patients during a pivotal epoch in the evolution of the state and the medical profession. Over three hundred men (and a handful of women), heretofore unexamined as a group, made up the medical staff of the Tudor and Stuart kings and queens of England (as well as the Lord Protectorships of Oliver and Richard Cromwell). The royal doctors faced enormous challenges in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries from diseases that respected no rank and threatened the very security of the realm. Moreover, they had to weather political and religious upheavals that led to regicide and revolution, as well as cope with sharp theoretical and jurisdictional divisions within English medicine. The rulers often interceded in medical controversies at the behest of their royal doctors, bringing sovereign authority to bear on the condition of medicine. Elizabeth Lane Furdell is Professor of History at the University of North Florida.

Book Synopsis John Dee's Library Catalogue by : Richard Julian Roberts
Download or read book John Dee's Library Catalogue written by Richard Julian Roberts and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1990 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Dee (1527-1609) has emerged as one of the most influential figures in the intellectual history of Tudor England. Though best known in his own time as a mathematician, he had a host of other interests (including navigation, astrology and astronomy, cabbala, alchemy, paracelsian medicine, and Welsh history) and was one of the first scholars to advocate collecting manuscripts from the dissolved monastic libraries. Indeed his own library was perhaps the largest assembled in England by one man before 1600. This study, which includes a facsimile of the detailed catalogue of 1583, recounts for the first time the growth of Dee's library, the raid made upon it during his absence in Poland, and its dispersal after his death. The book also describes the location of his surviving books and manuscripts.
