Book excerpt: The true story of a Romany childhood... Gypsy Princess is a searingly honest account of what life is really like for travelling communities, for girls in particular, and captures a way of life that is slowly fading away. If you enjoyed the memoirs of Mikey Walsh and Jess Smith, you'll be enthralled by Violet Cannon's biography. 'A fascinating and enjoyable insight into Gypsy life' - Closer A true blooded Gypsy, Violet Cannon grew up the Romany way. Life was tough at times, living in a cramped one-roomed trailer, but, unbound by strict routines, Violet spent her days learning to keep home, playing and roaming the fields with a sense of freedom long lost to the rest of modern society. Immersed in the Gypsy way of life, her childhood set her apart from other children. Bullied by classmates, and segregated from 'gorgia' kids (all non-Gypsies), Violet eventually left school at the age of nine to live a life of travel, play and learning under generations-old Gypsy rules on the fringes of society. With traditional values at the heart of her childhood, the pressure of conforming and marrying young was intense. Violet was duty-bound to find a husband, but would her marriage lead to the 'happy ever after' she grew up believing in as a Gypsy girl? What readers are saying about Gypsy Princess: 'A fascinating and realistic look at what it means to be a Gypsy in today's society. A little understanding of Gypsy traditions goes a long way and I hope we see more biographies like this one' 'Violet is so likeable and warm, and the stories are written so vividly that you can really imagine yourself there' 'I could not put this book down - from the first paragraph I was hooked. I would love to read more about this fascinating lady and her family. By the end of the book I felt as if I knew them all'

Book excerpt: Romany Gypsy True stories, Bittersweet and sometimes funny, from my childhood.1943 to 1959. Family History: Lords, Ladies, and Gypsies going back over 700 hundred years. These are true Romany Gypsy stories from my childhood as I remember them, with a little bit of the author's artistic licence to make them more enjoyable. If you are looking for stories that romanticise a Romany Gypsy life on the open road, then this book is probably not for you. However if you are interested in the true life of Romany Gypsy's, you may find this book interesting. Not all Romany Gypsies lived in wagons but more often houses, preferring a permanent base where they couldn't be told to move on, but still travelling and living the gypsy life in their horse-drawn vardo wagons, carrying on the Romany traditions of flower and rag rug making, duckering (fortune-telling), and hawking (selling) flowers and firewood logs from a horse-drawn cart, as me and mum did, travelling back and forth from the gypsy Camp on Belverdere Marshes the hop picking and fruit farms. Many kept their carts and horses in their backyards as we did. Some had vardos (horse-drawn wagons) and houses, as did my grandad's sister, Ocean. Family History: Lords, Ladies, and Gypsies going back to over 700 hundred years. We are related to Princess Di and her boys, for me and I suppose you [Lenny Harvey] are the same generation as me. I think that makes her our fifteenth cousin once-removed (that means fifteen generations back, we shared a grandad).Winston Churchill is also our thirteenth cousin three times removed. The removed bit means they are not of the same generation as us. Diana is actually of my mum's generation, and Winston is the same generation as my great grandad. Sarah Ferguson and her daughters are also our cousins. We share a great granddad back in the 1400s called Richard Yate. I met HRH Prince of Wales in 1996 in Crimea, Ukraine. At the time, I was not aware that he was family. He never mentioned it either. Sadly none of the family were invited to either Diana or Sarah's wedding. Probably with all our travelling about they lost our address.

She is adopted and educated by a wealthy woman who loves her as if she were her own child. Her benefactress loses her fortune, but Nan does her part to help the household survive economically. When her long lost uncle arrives from Romania, Nan learns that her father was a famous Gypsy musician and her mother came from a wealthy and important Romanian family. When her mother and father died unexpectedly when she was a baby, she was given to her father’s sister to be raised among the Gypsies. Difficulties among the Gypsy clan forced her to leave the caravan, and thus she was adopted and raised by the wealthy woman. In the end, a neighbour boy who has loved Nan for years, proposes and they get married. They go on a Gypsy honeymoon in a ‘roulotte.’ (round-topped wooden caravan pulled by horse). What happens next you ask? Well, you’ll just have to download and read this FREE book to find out for yourself. NOTE: Some interesting parts of this story are that this book was written in 1926, and it takes place in southern California. All eyes in the darkness of the wagon focused on one person, an incredibly beautiful woman who called herself Salome, and who appeared out of nowhere at the detention area before their deportation. Her magical beauty was noticed right away by everyone upon their arrival to Auschwitz-Birkenau, including the young SS Colonel, Helmut von Clausen. Ignoring the objections from every cell of his body, he simply could not resist the effects of Salomes beauty. As his dark past surfaced and intertwined with Salomes magic, an unexpected metamorphosis takes place that changes everything in Helmuts life. As Helmut searches for answers, he must come to terms with his inner evil and the possibility that finding the answer to his quest for truth may cost him the ultimate price, his very own life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the greatest challenges during the enlargement process of the European Union towards the east is how the issue of the Roma or Gypsies is tackled. This ethnic minority group represents a much higher share by numbers, too, in some regions going above 20% of the population. This enormous social and political problem cannot be solved without proper historical studies like this book, the most comprehensive history of Gypsies in Romania. It is based on academic research, synthesizing the entire historical Romanian and foreign literature concerning this topic, and using lot of information from the archives. The main focus is laid on the events of the greatest consequence. Special attention is devoted to aspects linked to the long history of the Gypsies, such as slavery, the process of integration and assimilation into the majority population, as well as the marginalization of Gypsies, which has historic roots. The process of emancipation of Gypsies in the mid-19th century receives due treatment. The deportation of Gypsies to Transnistria during the Antonescu regime, between 1942-1944, is reconstructed in a special chapter. The closing chapters elaborate on the policy toward Gypsies in the decades after the Second World War that explain for the latest developments and for the situation of this population in today's Romania.

Book excerpt: Edited by Anna Alice Chapin (1880 – 1920), the Now A Days Fairy Book contains such classic stories as: the Brothers Grimm’s ‘Snow White’ and ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, Charles Perrault’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and ‘Sleeping Beauty’, alongside Mme D’Aulnoy’s ‘The Three Bears’ and other less well-known tales such as ‘The Mist Island’ and ‘Fairy Talk.’ All of these wonderful tales are accompanied by colour illustrations by Jessie Willcox Smith, and appear in their original translations. Jessie Willcox Smith (1863 – 1935) was one of the most prominent female illustrators in the United States during the Golden Age of American Illustration. She was also a prolific contributor to literary novels and magazines during the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Most notable was her ongoing relationship with Good Housekeeping, including the long-running ‘Mother Goose’ series. Smith’s style changed drastically through her life. In the beginning of her career she used dark lined borders to delineate brightly coloured objects, and in later works she masterfully softened lines and colours – until they almost disappeared. Presented alongside the text of ‘The ‘Now A Days Fairy Book’, her illustrations further refine and elucidate Chapin’s thoughtfully edited collection. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration from the 1880s to the 1930s. Our collection showcases classic fairy tales, children’s stories, and the work of some of the most celebrated artists, illustrators and authors.
