Book excerpt: The story is a dramatic episode of the revolt of the blacks of St. Domingo in 1791. Bug-Jargal, the hero, is a negro, a slave in the household of a planter. He is secretly in love with his master's daughter, a poetic child, betrothed to her cousin, Leopold d'Auverney. The latter saves the life of Bug-Jargal, who is condemned to death for an act of rebellion. When the great revolt breaks out, and the whole island is in flames, Bug-Jargal protects the young girl, and saves the life of her lover. He even conducts D'Auverney to her he loves, and then, in the fullness of sublime abnegation, he surrenders himself to the whites, who shoot him dead.

Book excerpt: While Victor Hugo's lasting appeal as a novelist can in large part be attributed to the unforgettable characters that he created, character has been paradoxically the most criticized and least understood element of his fiction. Character and Meaning in the Novels of Victor Hugo provides readers with a deeper understanding of the complexities and nuances that characterize both Hugo's novel writing and the nineteenth-century French novel, and will thus appeal to the specialist and non-specialist alike.

Download or read book Bug-Jargal written by Victor Hugo and published by Livraria Press. This book was released on 2024-05-09 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new translation into American English from the original French manuscript of Victor Hugo's classic novel Bug-Jargal. This edition contains an afterword by the translator, a timeline of Hugo's life and a summary of each of Hugo's major works chronologically. Hugo's novel of colonial fiction follows the relationship between a legendary revolutionary leader named Bug-Jargal and a French military officer during the Haitian Revolution. The idea of a "noble savage" is a term from Rousseau's philosophy that became a motif in Romantic literature. While the antiquated phraseology Hugo uses is obviously Euro-centric and subtly racist, this novel still notable in it's condemnation of colonialism and criticism of European exceptionalism and an example of Rousseau's Humanistic philosophy.
