Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 100 illustrations. The grandeur of the age of glamourous travel is brought to life in this lavishly illustrated volume. This fascinating book celebrates a time when one could cross the Atlantic on the "Queen Mary" or speed across Europe on the "Orient Express," being pampered all the while. At journey's end there was the Ritz Hotel in Paris or the Excelsior in Venice to offer luxurious accomodations and the finest foods. A lively text, accompanied by period illustrations, make this book ideal reading for those who yearn for a gentler, less hurried age when how you reached your destination was considered as important as actually arriving.

Book excerpt: The hotel that I love like a fatherland is situated in one of the great port cities of Europe, and the heavy gold Antiqua letters in which its banal name is spelled out shining across the roofs of the gently banked houses are in my eye metal flags, metal bannerets that instead of fluttering shine out their greeting. In the 1920s and 30s, Joseph Roth travelled extensively in Europe, leading a peripatetic life living in hotels and writing about the towns through which he passed. Incisive, nostalgic, curious and sharply observed - and collected together here for the first time - his pieces paint a picture of a continent racked by change yet clinging to tradition. From the 'compulsive' exercise regime of the Albanian army, the rickety industry of the new oil capital of Galicia, and 'split and scalped' houses of Tirana forced into modernity, to the individual and idiosyncratic characters that Roth encounters in his hotel stays, these tender and quietly dazzling vignettes form a series of literary postcards written from a bygone world, creeping towards world war.

Book excerpt: Alexis is smart, sexy, and enthusiastic—but, like most people, she’s got a few things holding her back in life. And if she’s to ever move forward, she’s got to confront them—head on, and she does. From failing her school exams and dealing with her father’s illness to being mistaken for a celebrity and avoiding serious relationships at any cost, Alexis’s life is riddled with complications and concerns, some harrowing and others absolutely hilarious. When she meets a svelte Swede named Sven, a United Nations officer, Alexis’s life becomes even more complicated, and her fear of commitment becomes more pronounced, placing her at a pivotal point: Can she overcome her fears and get married? Or will she search for any excuse to keep from walking down the aisle? The Green Line Divide: Romance, Travel, and Turmoils follows Alexis’s trials and tribulations in life, love, and relationships, set against a Mediterranean backdrop rich with travel, musicals and culture. A truly informative, laugh-out-loud novel, it is sure to appeal to readers with a wide variety of interests, including tourism, hitchhiking, international history, personal growth, and stories of relationship drama. The story is more like Summer Holidays, a British movie,or The Sound of Music.

This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to engage with the full range of American travel writing about nineteenth-century Ottoman Palestine, and the first to acknowledge the influence of the late-eighteenth-century Barbary captivity narrative on nineteenth-century travel writing about the Middle East. Brian Yothers argues that American travel writing about the Holy Land forms a coherent, if greatly varied, tradition, which can only be fully understood when works by major writers such as Twain and Melville are studied alongside missionary accounts, captivity narratives, chronicles of religious pilgrimages, and travel writing in the genteel tradition. Yothers also examines works by lesser-known authors such as Bayard Taylor, John Lloyd Stephens, and Clorinda Minor, demonstrating that American travel writing is marked by a profound intertextuality with the Hebrew and Christian scriptures and with British and continental travel narratives about the Holy Land. His concluding chapter on Melville's Clarel shows how Melville's poem provides an incisive critique of the nascent imperial discourse discernible in the American texts with which it is in dialogue.

Book excerpt: When 1772 Collides With 2012, Two Lovers Discover More Than They Ever Imagined in MAKE TIME FOR LOVE a Time Travel Romance by Louise Clark -- 2012, Massachusetts, Boston Area -- Career focused and success driven, Faith Hamilton isn't ready for love when she meets Cody Simpson, the chief software developer at the company where she works. He's everything she doesn't want in a man--analytical, focused on science, inflexible. Or so she thinks until she takes a chance on a date with him. His kisses melt her reservations but her heart remains frozen, trapped by the need to keep a secret: Her eccentric 18th century time-traveling ancestor, Andrew Byrne, who has a habit of dropping in without notice. Cody Simpson thinks Faith is the most beautiful woman he's ever seen. She's also the most annoying. He despises her hard-driving corporate-ladder-climbing mindset and ignores her while immersing himself in his development projects and neglecting his basic duties. Then fate intervenes. Andrew Byrne, Faith's out-of-town relative who has never used a computer and wears clothes that look remarkably like ones from the mid-eighteenth century, is hired as Cody's new assistant. When Andrew announces his intent to permanently stay with Faith in the 21st century, she needs Cody's help to transform him from an eighteenth-century landowner to a modern-day computer geek. Faith is the reason Andrew can move through time, a secret she guards for her own safety. But with Andrew bumbling through the basics of 21st century life and a budding romance with Cody, Faith must choose between guarding her secrets and trusting Cody enough to make time for love. Publisher's Note: This Time Travel Romantic Comedy from Louise Clark features clean language and mild sexual content. Fans of Victorine E. Lieske, Rebekah Crane, Cami Checketts as well as Janet Leigh and Callie Langridge will not want to miss this delightful romantic comedy series. As well, her love of travel meant the books are set in different locals, from historic Boston to the badlands of the American West, and beyond.

Book excerpt: In the still-turbulent year of 1970, Eric was in mid-life, experiencing the trappings that come with it: a failing marriage, growing children, and a mundane job. When he meets Robin, a vivacious and beautiful woman, their attraction is instantaneous. Together, Robin and Eric decide they've had enough of the establishment. Pooling their assets, they surrender their jobs, buy a VW camper, and equip themselves like many other wanderers of the day. Legally separated from his wife and having provided for his children, Eric leaves his life behind to join Robin in an adventure that will change them both. With their camper equipped for roughing it, they travel from the parks and forests of Washington and Oregon, down the coast of California, through Mexico and Central America. Along the way, they experience the beauty of their natural surroundings, fall deeply in love, and encounter some colorful characters some friendly and some who place them in grave danger. Eric and Robin's exciting tale of travel and adventure includes jungle safaris, deep sea fishing trips, erotic love, and dangerous encounters with terrorists, smugglers, and modern-day pirates, and is based on the author's own experiences.
