Book Synopsis The Double Night and Other Poems (Classic Reprint) by : Morrison Heady

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Double Night and Other Poems Before his blindness he had received the bare rudiments of an English education in the country schools of that day. Later he spent a year at the Kentucky Institute for the Blind, and fourteen months at the Ohio Institute, leaving the latter when about twenty years of age. Meanwhile he had applied himself earnestly to the study of music. His mental activity seems to have been stimulated by his deprivations. He read eagerly everything printed in raised type, and, until he lost his hearing, extended his knowledge of books with the aid of friends who enjoyed reading aloud to him. Of the poems in this volume, most were written after Mr. Heady's fortieth year. I have said they are almost unique in interest; nor do I use this term simply because their author is blind and deaf. They contain one of the most elaborate experiments in hexameter yet made by an English poet, and that, too, by an English poet entirely ignorant of the classic models. The grammarian, Noble Butler, once congratulated Mr. Heady on this fact, on the ground that a knowledge of Homeric and Virgilian hexameter could not but impede an English poet. Whether fortunate or unfortunate in this respect, Mr. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dream of Dreams: The Charge Other Poems Fond Muse of Life! If thou couldst sing In sweet accordance with my dream, Then would thy tuneful numbers cling Unto a fair, enchanted stream Which now reflects a fading beam Of days that vanished with the spring. What, then, undying Hope, can bring Boyhood, when all was most divine, And nothing of the world was mine? What can these pleasures half restore Except a dream of days before? Then, spirit of a higher clime, Ascending on unweighted wings, When thou hast flown to heights sublime, Send down a picture of the things That wakened Infancy's pure dreams Which slumber by the crystal streams. What though old, dull Reality, Realizing only that which is, Know not the things that ought to be, In dreams yet Fancy finds a bliss; For still that brightest fire of fire Will in the darkest gloom inspire The soul, which fain would fall asleep Upon the billows of the Deep, Were it not for that flame divine, Which gazers of Chaldean line Beheld within the silent skies, Where Light celestial never dies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dream of a Star: And Other Poems It is not without considerable diffidence, that the Author sends forth to the world this little volume of verse. His avocations have prevented him from bestowing on the work anything worthy to be called revision, and the Poems therefore appear almost as originally written. The principal Poem, nearly all the Sonnets, and many of the other pieces, were written between October 1851 and May 1853, during the greater portion of which period the Author was residing in the Jungles. Without a European with whom to hold converse, with no one near him with whom he could indulge in an interchange of sentiments, he found a solace in his lonely hours in endeavouring to express his thoughts in verse, with what success it is for the reader to decide; but the Author feels assured, that they will judge kindly of this his first essay.
