Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Swan King" is the biography of one of the most enigmatic figures of the 19th century, described by Verlaine as 'the only true king of his century'. A man of wildly eccentric temperament and touched by a rare, imaginative genius, Ludwig II of Bavaria is remembered both for his patronage of Richard Wagner and for the fabulous palaces which he created as part of a dream-world to escape the responsibilities of state. In realization of his fantasies, he created a ferment of creativity among artists and craftsmen, while his neglect of Bavaria's political interests made powerful enemies among those critical of his self-indulgence and excesses. At the age of 40, declared insane in a plot to depose him, Ludwig died in mysterious circumstances.

Book Synopsis The Art of the Woman by : Emily Fourmy Cutrer
Download or read book The Art of the Woman written by Emily Fourmy Cutrer and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Art of the Woman explores the life of German-born Elisabet Ney, a flamboyant sculptor who transfixed the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer and left the court of the half-mad Ludwig of Bavaria to put down new roots in Texas. Born in 1833, Ney gained notoriety in Europe by sculpting the busts of such figures as Ludwig II, Schopenhauer, Garibaldi, and Bismarck. In 1871 she abruptly emigrated to America and became something of a recluse until resuming her sculpting career two decades later. In Texas, she was known for stormy relationships with officials, patrons, and women’s organizations. Her works included sculptures of Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin and are exhibited in the state and US capitols as well as the Smithsonian. Emily Fourmy Cutrer’s biography of Ney makes extensive use of primary sources and was the first to appraise both Ney’s legend and individual works of art. Cutrer argues that Ney was an accomplished sculptor coming out of a neglected German neoclassical tradition and that, whatever her failures and eccentricities, she was an important catalyst to cultural activity in Texas.
Book Synopsis Queen Maria Sophia of Naples, a Forgotten Heroine by : Carl Küchler
Download or read book Queen Maria Sophia of Naples, a Forgotten Heroine written by Carl Küchler and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-11-05 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the exiled Queen of Naples, Maria Sophia, as the title page of this little volume sets forth, is the story of a "forgotten heroine." In many respects, it recalls the story of her sister, Elizabeth of Hungary, though her fate was not so tragic. She was saved from the fury of the assassin; but she revealed many of her sister's attributes—the same courage, the same beauty, the same gayety of disposition, clouded in much the same manner, the same love of nature and of animals, the same love of the people, and the same domestic misfortunes.
