Download or read book Marcus Aurelius written by Frank McLynn and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 2009-08-20 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marcus Aurelius (121-180 AD) is one of the great figures of antiquity who still speaks to us today, more than two thousand years after his death. His Meditations has been compared by John Stuart Mill to the Sermon on the Mount. A guide to how we should live, it remains one of the most widely read books from the classical world. But Marcus Aurelius was much more than a philosopher. As emperor he stabilized the empire, issued numerous reform edicts, and defended the borders with success. His life itself represented the fulfillment of Plato's famous dictum that mankind will prosper only when philosophers are rulers and rulers philosophers. Frank McLynn's Marcus Aurelius, based on all available original sources, is the definitive and most vivid biography to date of this monumental historical figure.

Download or read book Cultural and Landscape Changes in South-east Hungary written by Andrea H. Vaday and published by Archaeolingua. This book was released on 1996 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complete publication of the Prehistoric, Sarmatian and Late Avar settlement at Gyoma 133 (Békés County Microregion). This is a full excavation report on work carried out between 1986 and 1988, the last season being in advance of development. The bulk of material is of Sarmatian (Roman) date and involves three occupation levels, the second involving extensive evidence of metallurgy. Particularly interesting are the results of animal bone study which allow a new picture of Sarmatian agriculture to be built up. The Sarmatians were great horsemen and the discovery of articulated remains of horses and dogs seem to indicate ritual treatment of these important animals.

Book Synopsis The Ripa Pannonica in Hungary by : Zsolt Visy
Download or read book The Ripa Pannonica in Hungary written by Zsolt Visy and published by Akademiai Kiads. This book was released on 2003 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the history of the Roman Empire in what is now Hungary and considers the legacy of the Empire. The Roman Empire was the largest and longest existing empire in the history of the world. Its frontier extended as far as the Danube during the reign of Augustus, and Transdanubia formed a significant part of the province of Pannonia. The Roman Army's deployment along the frontiers began at the end of the first century AD. Between this point in time and the Late Roman Period (the fourth century AD), military units were only stationed along the province's frontier, the Danube River, and these river frontiers were denoted by the word ripa. The frontier in Pannonia extended from the Vienna Basin as far as the mouth of the Save River. It is typical that the sites of three legionary bases along this section of the frontier became the capitals of three countries: Vindobona (Vienna), Aquincum (Budapest), and Singidunum (Belgrade), although the latter belonged to the neighboring prov
