Book Synopsis Seeking New Horizons by : Henry W. Castner
Download or read book Seeking New Horizons written by Henry W. Castner and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1990-04-01 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Castner developed this innovative perspective on geographic education through observation of the Orff-Schulwerk technique of music education. This pedagogical method provides an organizational framework within which the primitive elements and concepts of music can be introduced, experienced, and explored, and auditory discrimination developed. The process of improvisation is the focal point of the Schulwerk. Castner suggests that the numerous educational benefits of improvisation can be obtained in geographic education by the process of "mapping." He defines mapping as graphic description, analysis, and presentation in a problem-solving context. After more than two decades of research in cartographic communication, Castner concludes that success in examining and analysing landscapes, and images representative of them, is dependant upon developed skills in visual discrimination. Seeking New Horizons describes a rationale for linking basic visual discriminations to their logical extensions in the concepts that are fundamental to geographic thinking, thus providing challenging approaches to developing spatial awareness, graphic literacy, and geographic understanding. In addition, Castner identifies eight basic concepts which would allow students and teachers to work interactively with spatial information and, over time, with increasingly complex and sophisticated tools and at increasingly abstract levels of generalization.

Book Synopsis Landmarks in Mapping by : Alexander Kent
Download or read book Landmarks in Mapping written by Alexander Kent and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Founded by the British Cartographic Society (BCS) and first published in June 1964, The Cartographic Journal was the first general distribution English language journal in cartography. This volume of classic papers and accompanying invited reflections brings together some of the key papers to celebrate 50 years of publication. It is a celebration of The Cartographic Journal and of the work that scholars, cartographers and map-makers have published which have made it the foremost international journal of cartography. The intention here is to bring a flavor of the breadth of the journal in one volume spanning the history to date. As a reference work it highlights some of the very best work and, perhaps, allows readers to discover or re-discover a paper from the annals. As we constantly strive for new work and new insights we mustn't ignore the vast repository of material that has gone before. It is this that has shaped cartography as it exists today and as new research contributes to the discipline, which will continue to do so."
Book Synopsis Physical and Information Models in Geography (Routledge Revivals) by : Richard Chorley
Download or read book Physical and Information Models in Geography (Routledge Revivals) written by Richard Chorley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-14 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1967, this book explores the theme of geographical generalization, or model building. It is composed of eight of the chapters from the original Models in Geography, published in 1967. The first chapter broadly outlines geographical generalization and examines the nature and function of generalized statements, ranging from conceptual models to scale models, in a geographical context. The following chapter deals with model theory in a wider scientific framework and the rest of the book discusses models of physical systems and information models. The book considers model-type generalizations that are applied in the three fields of geomorphology, meteorology and climatology, and hydrology before focusing on the transference of information and ideas in geography. This text represents a robustly anti-idiographic statement of modern work in one of the major branches of geography.
