Book Synopsis Mechanics and Physics of Bubbles in Liquids by : Leen van Wijngaarden
Download or read book Mechanics and Physics of Bubbles in Liquids written by Leen van Wijngaarden and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A IUTAM (International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics) Sympo sium 'Mechanics and Physics of Bubbles in Liquids' was held at Pasadena, Calif., USA from 15 through 19 June 1981. The present volume contains the printed version of nearly all papers read at the Symposium. The study of the behaviour of bubbles in liquids was originally stimu lated by problems in cavitation and in boiling ofliquids. Today research is initiated by problems in many other fields as well. In this respect a growing interest from the side of biomechanics may be mentioned. Ordering of the papers could be done either according to the various mechanical and physical aspects of the subject or according to the fields of application. The presentaton at the Symposium contained a bit of both; there was a session on physico-chemical aspects for example and also a session on biological applications. The subdivision in this volume follows roughly the sessions in the Symposium. Most of them start with a paper of a survey nature, reporting progress made in recent years. Here, as in other fields of engineering science, one notes the important part played by experimental techniques and by numerical analysis.

Book Synopsis Cavitation Bubble Nucleation by Energetic Particles by :
Download or read book Cavitation Bubble Nucleation by Energetic Particles written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early sixties, experimental measurements using a bubble chamber confirmed quantitatively the thermal spike theory of bubble nucleation by energetic particles: the energy of the slow, heavy alpha decay recoils used in those experiments matched the calculated bubble nucleation energy to within a few percent. It was a triumph, but was soon to be followed by a puzzle. Within a couple of years, experiments on similar liquids, but well below their normal boiling points, placed under tensile stress showed that the calculated bubble nucleation energy was an order of magnitude less than the recoil energy. Why should the theory work so well in the one case and so badly in the other? How did the liquid, or the recoil particle, "know" the difference between the two experiments? Another mathematical model of the same physical process, introduced in 1967, showed qualitatively why different analyses would be needed for liquids with high and low vapor pressures under positive or negative pressures. But, the quantitative agreement between the calculated nucleation energy and the recoil energy was still poor--the former being smaller by a factor of two to three. In this report, the 1967 analysis is extended and refined: the qualitative understanding of the difference between positive and negative pressure nucleation, "boiling" and "cavitation" respectively, is retained, and agreement between the negative pressure calculated to be needed for nucleation and the energy calculated to be available is much improved. A plot of the calculated negative pressure needed to induce bubble formation against the measured value now has a slope of 1.0, although there is still considerable scatter in the individual points.

Book Synopsis Nucleate and Film Boiling in Reduced Gravity from Horizontal and Vertical Wires by : Robert Siegel
Download or read book Nucleate and Film Boiling in Reduced Gravity from Horizontal and Vertical Wires written by Robert Siegel and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nucleate boiling was studied experimentally from electrically heated horizontal and vertical wires (0.0197-in. diam.) in water, ethyl alcohol, and 60-percent-by-weight aqueous sucrose solution in gravity fields of 0.014 and 1.0 times Earth gravity. The fluids were at their saturation temperatures at atmospheric pressure. The gravity reduction to 0.014 times Earth gravity caused a shift of only a few degrees in the curve of heat flux as a function of the difference between surface and saturation temperatures. Film boiling of ethyl alcohol was observed at Earth gravity and at several reduced gravity fields down to 0.014 times Earth gravity. For both the horizontal and vertical orientations, the gravity field and the circumferential surface tension at the interface of the vapor film surrounding the thin wire proved to be very important for the determination of the vapor removal pattern. As gravity was reduced, the vapor film behavior for the vertical orientation approached that for the horizontal position. A motion picture film is available that illustrates the boiling behavior in reduced gravity.
