There have been few studies into how survivors of CSA construct identity or, specifically, how music therapy may afford such construction. Using a multiple case study design, this research investigated how three adolescent survivors of CSA, who took part in individual music therapy processes, constructed their identities through the techniques afforded them in sessions. All three participants had experienced multiple trauma, most notably abandonment/orphanhood, and this appeared to impact on their exploration of identity in sessions. Findings showed that the main affordances of music therapy for participants were the mastery experienced in relation to certain techniques (which appeared to support confidence and further exploration), and the use of symbolism (promoting the exploration of difficult experiences, as well as affording participants experimentation with preferred identities).

Book excerpt: Sexual abuse is a traumatic event, which leaves survivors with mental, physical and emotional needs. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore whether closed group music therapy sessions could enhance self-compassion, as reported and expressed by sexual abuse survivors. The music therapy process that was conducted was designed to facilitate the three core constructs of self-compassion as researched by Kirsten Neff (2003a), namely self-kindness, common humanity and mindfulness. The study explored the experiences of six sexual abuse survivors residing at a community centre in Lavender Hill, Cape Town, South Africa. Music therapy sessions took place once a week for a period of six weeks and the main musical components of the sessions included song-writing, group singing, drumming, vocal and instrumental improvisations and relaxation. The findings emerged from the interpretive phenomenological analysis of the individual semi-structured interview transcripts and thick descriptions of excerpts of the audio recordings. From the findings of this study it was concluded that the group music therapy sessions offered sexual abuse survivors opportunities for: self-exploration, self-confidence, interpersonal connections, the experience of being supported, encouragement, enjoyment and vitality, stress relief, emotional exploration and expression, and transformation of perspectives. These findings were represented by the following three main themes; characteristics of their lifeworlds, the affordances of music therapy for the group, and the groupaÌ22́Ơ4́Øs experience of transformation, which are then discussed in relation to self-compassion.

Book excerpt: It is well documented that adverse or traumatic events in childhood can lead to increased incidences of serious mental and physical health diseases and disorders. It is also well documented that medical treatment, especially during childhood can be stressful and potentially traumatic, leading to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or Symptoms after treatment. This is especially true for lengthy and invasive medical treatment such as Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT). A single music therapy intervention has been shown to effectively improve resilience in pediatric HSCT patients. But additional research is needed to understand the contribution music therapy interventions make to traumatic and stressful experiences and building resilience across time. This longitudinal two-phase multi-case study examined the patterns of potential trauma, toxic stress, and resilience during the HSCT process as well as the potential roles, functions, and contributions of music therapy interventions to the mitigation and prevention of toxic stress and trauma. The first phase, a retrospective multi-case study, resulted in the construction of a preliminary model of music therapy which identified patterns of stress and trauma and how the music therapy process interacts with these patterns. In the second phase, a purposeful sample of cases was used to confirm, clarify, and challenge the model utilizing Template Analysis. The outcome is the Music Therapy for Pediatric Medical Trauma, a proposed model of music therapy to focus treatment with the intention of mitigating toxic stress and trauma and build resilience in pediatric HSCT patients.

Bereavement can leave children feeling isolated, with fewer material and nonmaterial resources. This qualitative multiple case study was designed to explore the role that music therapy could play in supporting children who have lost a parent. Five children participated from a mainstream school in Cape Town who had suffered the loss of a parent in the three years prior to the study. Participants0́9 ages ranged between seven and twelve and 26 sessions were conducted altogether. Excerpts from video recordings of the sessions were written as thick descriptions and, through interpretive phenomenological analysis, a total of six themes were identified. It was found that the music therapy processes offered clients access to supportive client-therapist relationships, a safe space for emotional expression and reflection on significant relationships, opportunities for assertive expression, and a space where they could express views on beliefs and rituals. Participants identified internal and external resources that served to support them during their processes of bereavement.
