Book Synopsis GATT, WTO and the Regulation of International Trade in Textiles by : Claudia Jiménez Cortés
Download or read book GATT, WTO and the Regulation of International Trade in Textiles written by Claudia Jiménez Cortés and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-20 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1997, in this book an attempt has been made to analyze the legal structure of GATT and the WTO as well as those agreements which control trade in textiles. One of the GATT’s major failures was its inability to come into line with the new economic reality and the needs of those states who created this system for controlling international trade. Trade in textiles was an excellent example of this. Now, the WTO aims to overcome this problem thanks to its greater pragmatism and its search for solutions to free trade difficulties. The WTO is not, however, the perfect solution. Its highly political character allows room for improvement even though the key to its success still lies with the effective cooperation of member states. As for the textile sector, this new panorama for trade in goods provides it with a new opportunity to finally return to the general legal framework in the year 2005.

Book Synopsis World Trade Organization Agreement on Anti-dumping by : K. D. Raju
Download or read book World Trade Organization Agreement on Anti-dumping written by K. D. Raju and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The WTO Secretariat reports that during the period from 1995 to June 30, 2007 WTO members initiated 3097 anti-dumping investigations. Of these, 474 were put forward by India, which made it the largest user of this measure among WTO Members. The traditional argument of developing countries was that loopholes or absence of clear definitions in the anti-dumping rules have increased the possibility of abuses and discretionary practices against them. Now, many developing countries like India have become frequent users of this measure. For a better understanding of the various provisions of the WTO's Anti-dumping Agreement (ADA) a critical investigation of the resulting jurisprudence is a necessity. To that end, this timely work has a fivefold aim: and• To explore the jurisprudence that has emerged around the anti-dumping regime and how it affected developing countries; and• To assess how effectively and to what extent the WTO's Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) is able to analyze the violations of ADA provisions; and• To examine domestic compliance with DSB decisions; and• To study the Indian cases which come before the nation's Customs, Excise andamp; Sales Tax Appellate Tribunal, various High Courts and the Supreme Court of India; and and• To offer recommendations for the improvement of the anti-dumping regime from a developing country perspective.

Book Synopsis The Multilateral Trading System by : Robert Mitchell Stern
Download or read book The Multilateral Trading System written by Robert Mitchell Stern and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume provides an analytical approach to most of the major items on the agenda of the Uruguay Round of Multilateral Trade Negotiations, which was convened in 1986 under the auspices of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT)." "The Uruguay Round negotiating agenda is ambitious in scope, consisting of such topics as barriers to trade, sectoral issues, and GATT rules, and a number of topics that had not been addressed in previous negotiations. The Multilateral Trading System begins with an introduction and overview of the issues, followed by two chapters that put the Uruguay Round in context and provide some historical perspective relating to previous GATT negotiations. The bulk of the volume consists of twelve analytical chapters that address many of the central issues, including tariffs and nontariff barriers; dumping; safeguards; agriculture; services; trade-related intellectual property rights; and trade-related investment measures. The concluding chapters deal with options for change, focusing on trade-offs, coalitions, and national interests and on suggestions for the design of a new constitution to govern the global trading system." "The Multilateral Trading System deals with issues of central importance in the global trading system. It will be of particular interest to specialists in international trade and staff economists in national and international agencies. Specialists and students in political science, law, and business administration will also find much that is useful."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis Development, Trade, and the WTO by : Bernard M. Hoekman
Download or read book Development, Trade, and the WTO written by Bernard M. Hoekman and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Publisher's description: Developing countries are increasingly confronted with the need to address trade policy related issues in international agreements, most prominently the World Trade Organization (WTO). New WTO negotiations on a broad range of subjects were launched in November 2001. Determining whether and how international trade agreements can support economic development is a major challenge. Stakeholders in developing countries must be informed on the issues and understand how their interests can be pursued through international cooperation. This handbook offers guidance on the design of trade policy reform, surveys key disciplines and the functioning of the World Trade Organization (WTO), and discusses numerous issues and options that confront developing countries in using international cooperation to improve domestic policy and obtain access to export markets. Many of the issues discussed are also relevant in the context of regional integration agreements. Separate sections of the handbook summarize what constitutes sound trade policy; the major aspects of the WTO from a development perspective; policy issues in the area of merchandise trade and the liberalization of international transactions in services; protection of intellectual property rights and economic development; new regulatory subjects that are emerging in the agenda of trade talks; and enhancing participation of developing countries in the global trading system.

Book Synopsis Domestic Regulation and Service Trade Liberalization by : Pierre Sauve
Download or read book Domestic Regulation and Service Trade Liberalization written by Pierre Sauve and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2003-08-29 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trade in services, far more than trade in goods, is affected by a variety of domestic regulations, ranging from qualification and licensing requirements in professional services to pro-competitive regulation in telecommunications services. Experience shows that the quality of regulation strongly influences the consequences of trade liberalization. WTO members have agreed that a central task in the ongoing services negotiations will be to develop a set of rules to ensure that domestic regulations support rather than impede trade liberalization. Since these rules are bound to have a profound impact on the evolution of policy, particularly in developing countries, it is important that they be conducive to economically rational policy-making. This book addresses two central questions: What impact can international trade rules on services have on the exercise of domestic regulatory sovereignty? And how can services negotiations be harnessed to promote and consolidate domestic policy reform across highly diverse sectors? The book, with contributions from several of the world's leading experts in the field, explores a range of rule-making challenges arising at this policy interface, in areas such as transparency, standards and the adoption of a necessity test for services trade. Contributions also provide an in-depth look at these issues in the key areas of accountancy, energy, finance, health, telecommunications and transportation services.

Book excerpt: This research explores how multilateralism in trade has worked over the past twenty years - and provides some lessons about how it can work in the future. It describes the WTO's achievements across a number of key areas, including: strengthening the institutional foundations of the trade system; widening its membership and increasing participation; deepening trade integration through lower barriers and stronger rules; improving transparency and policy dialogue; strengthening dispute settlement; expanding cooperation with other international organizations; and enhancing public outreach. It concludes that the WTO has achieved much over its first twenty years but the success of the WTO has inevitably given rise to new challenges.

Book Synopsis Ensuring Quality to Gain Access to Global Markets by : Martin Kellermann
Download or read book Ensuring Quality to Gain Access to Global Markets written by Martin Kellermann and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2019-04-09 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a modern world with rapidly growing international trade, countries compete less based on the availability of natural resources, geographical advantages, and lower labor costs and more on factors related to firms' ability to enter and compete in new markets. One such factor is the ability to demonstrate the quality and safety of goods and services expected by consumers and confirm compliance with international standards. To assure such compliance, a sound quality infrastructure (QI) ecosystem is essential. Jointly developed by the World Bank Group and the National Metrology Institute of Germany, this guide is designed to help development partners and governments analyze a country's quality infrastructure ecosystems and provide recommendations to design and implement reforms and enhance the capacity of their QI institutions.
