Book excerpt: Warnings of the threat of an impending financial crisis are not new, but do we really know what constitutes an actual episode of crisis and how, once begun, it can be prevented from escalating into a full-blown economic collapse? Using both historical and contemporary episodes of breakdowns in financial trade, contributors to this volume draw insights from theory and empirical data, from the experience of closed and open economies worldwide, and from detailed case studies. They explore the susceptibility of American corporations to economic downturns; the origins of banking panics; and the behavior of financial markets during periods of crisis. Sever papers specifically address the current thrift crisis—including a detailed analysis of the over 500 FSLIC-insured thrifts in the southeast—and seriously challenge the value of recent measures aimed at preventing future collapse in that industry. Government economists and policy makers, scholars of industry and banking, and many in the business community will find these timely papers an invaluable reference.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: Upper level division2, , course: Thesis, language: English, abstract: The objective of this study is to analyze the performance of two selected commercial banks over a period of six years (2008-2013) in the Rwandan banking sector. For this purpose, CAMEL approach has been used and it is established that I&M Bank and BPR are at the top of the list, with their performances in terms of soundness being the best, but the commercial bank like BPR has taken a backseat and display low economic soundness in comparison. The study found that overall bank performance increased considerably in the first three years of the analysis. A significant change in trend is noticed at the onset of the global financial crisis in 2007, reaching its peak during 2008-2009. This resulted in falling profitability, low liquidity and deteriorating credit quality in the Rwandan Banking sector in general and BPR and I&M Bank particularly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Implementing Value at Risk Philip Best Value at Risk (VAR) is an estimate of the potential loss on a trading or investment portfolio. Its use has swept the banking world and is now accepted as an essential tool in any risk manager's briefcase. Perhaps the greatest strength of VAR is that it can cope with virtually all financial products, from simple securities through to complex exotic derivatives. This allows the risk taken, across diverse trading activities, to be compared. This said, VAR is no panacea. It is as critical to understand when the use of VAR is inappropriate as it is to understand the value VAR can add to a bank's understanding and control of its risks. This book aims to explain how VAR can be used as an integral part of a risk and business management framework, rather than as a stand-alone tool. The objectives of this book are to explain: What VAR is - and isn't! How to calculate VAR - the three main methods Why stress testing is needed to complement VAR How to make stress testing effective How to use VAR and stress testing to manage risk How to use VAR to improve a bank's performance VAR as a regulatory measure of risk and capital Risk management practitioners, general bank managers, consultants and students of finance and risk management will find this book, and the software package included, an invaluable addition to their library. Book excerpt: This book examines the determinants of financial performance of microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Ghana and Uganda, against the backdrop of the public and academic debate over the financial and social implications of microfinance. In the absence of a conceptual model, the study chooses an inductive research approach with the objective of defining and developing a conceptual model with the capacity to explain, quantify, and compare the performance of MFIs. The research is particularly relevant in the African context where microloan interest rates regularly exceed 100% per annum and where the microfinance industry is lacking behind its global peers in regard to financial and social performance. Book excerpt: Microfinance contracts have proven able to secure high rates of loan repayment in the face of limited liability and information asymmetries, but high repayment rates have not translated easily into profits for most microbanks. Profitability, though, is at the heart of the promise that microfinance can deliver poverty reduction while not relying on ongoing subsidy. The authors examine why this promise remains unmet for most institutions. Using a data set with unusually high quality financial information on 124 institutions in 49 countries, they explore the patterns of profitability, loan repayment, and cost reduction. The authors find that institutional design and orientation matter substantially. Lenders that do not use group-based methods to overcome incentive problems experience weaker portfolio quality and lower profit rates when interest rates are raised substantially. For these individual-based lenders, one key to achieving profitability is investing more heavily in staff costs-a finding consistent with the economics of information but contrary to the conventional wisdom that profitability is largely a function of minimizing cost.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 90.0, Cologne Business School Köln, language: English, abstract: The aim of this study is to understand the factors that drive financial sustainability in microfinance institutions. To accomplish this, several indicators for operational self-sufficiency (OSS) were investigated through correlation and regression analysis. The results indicate that the drivers for operational self-sufficiency include return on assets, number of active borrowers and profit margin. The analysis also showed that in terms of OSS and profitability, there is little difference between for-profit and non-profit organizations. To increase operational self-sufficiency institutions should increase return on asserts, the number of active borrowers and their profit margin. The results support the profit-incentive theory and the financial systems approach. These results indicate that to achieve financial sustainability MFIs should focus on covering operating expenses through earned revenues. Therefore, MFI structure should encourage cost-oriented management. Additionally, findings from this study revealed that there may not be a large tradeoff in efficiency and outreach. Results showed that operationally self-sufficient MFIs actually have a larger outreach than non-self-sufficient organizations. Limitations for this study include that the regression only explains the variables affecting OSS with 26 % certainty and other variables not tested may also be factors
