Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covers the vastly expanding subject of oxidative processes mediated by copper ions within biological systems Copper-mediated biological oxidations offer a broad range of fundamentally important and potentially practical chemical processes that cross many chemical and pharmaceutical disciplines. This newest volume in the Wiley Series on Reactive Intermediates in Chemistry and Biology is divided into three logical areas within the topic of copper/oxygen chemistry— biological systems, theory, and bioinorganic models and applications—to explore the biosphere for its highly evolved and thus efficient oxidative transformations in the discovery of new types of interactions between molecular oxygen and copper ion. Featuring a diverse collection of subject matter unified in one complete and comprehensive resource, Copper-Oxygen Chemistry probes the fundamental aspects of copper coordination chemistry, synthetic organic chemistry, and biological chemistry to reveal both the biological and chemical aspects driving the current exciting research efforts behind copper-oxygen chemistry. In addition, Copper-Oxygen Chemistry: Addresses the significantly increasing literature on oxygen-atom insertion and carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions as well as enantioselective oxidation chemistries Progresses from biological systems to spectroscopy and theory, and onward to bioinorganic models and applications Covers a wide array of reaction types such as insertion and dehydrogenation reactions that utilize the cheap, abundant, and energy-containing O2 molecule With thorough coverage by prominent authors and researchers shaping innovations in this growing field, this valuable reference is essential reading for bioinorganic chemists, as well as organic, synthetic, and pharmaceutical chemists in academia and industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Intemational Meeting on Vitamin B6 and Carbonyl Catalysis took place on Capri, Italy from 22nd to 27th May 1994 and was organized in conjunction with the 3rd Symposium on PQQ and Quinoproteins. It was an extraordinary occasion for scientists from all over the world to meet and discuss new developments in these overlapping fields. Several sessions were dedicated to the molecular aspects of Vitamin B6 and Quinone dependent enzymes, as well as to the cellular, biomedical and nutritional aspects. The congress was inaugurated by Paolo Fasella in his capacity as General Director of Science, Research and Development of the Commission of the European Communities, with an overview on Intemational Scientific Collaboration. The scientific sessions started with a talk on the History of Vitamin B6 given by David Metzler who at the very last minute presented Esmond Snell's paper adding some personal remarks. Unfortunately, both Esmond Snell and Alton Meister had to unexpectedly cancel the trip to Capri. These proceedings contain the papers presented as oral contributions and a few selected poster presentations. The limited number of pages meant we could not publish many interesting poster presentations, including those selected for the three lively and exciting evening poster discussion sessions called by the organizers "Vino, taralli and ... discussion".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summarizes the essential biosynthetic pathways for assembly of metal cofactor sites in functional metalloproteins Metalloprotein Active Site Assembly focuses on the processes that have evolved to orchestrate the assembly of metal cofactor sites in functional metalloproteins. It goes beyond the simple incorporation of single metal ions in a protein framework, and includes metal cluster assembly, metal-cofactor biosynthesis and insertion, and metal-based post-translational modifications of the protein environments that are necessary for function. Several examples of each of these areas have now been identified and studied; the current volume provides the current state-of-the-art understanding of the processes involved. An excellent companion to the earlier book in this series Metals in Cells—which discussed both the positive and negative effects of cellular interactions with metals—this comprehensive book provides a diverse sampling of what is known about metalloprotein active site assembly processes. It covers all major biological transition metal components (Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Mo), as well as the other inorganic components, metal-binding organic cofactors (e.g., heme, siroheme, cobalamin, molybdopterin), and post-translationally modified metal binding sites that make up the patchwork of evolved biological catalytic sites. The book compares and contrasts the biosynthetic assembly of active sites involving all biological metals. This has never been done before since it is a relatively new, fast-developing area of research. Metalloprotein Active Site Assembly is an ideal text for practitioners of inorganic biochemistry who are studying the biosynthetic pathways and gene clusters involved in active site assembly, and for inorganic chemists who want to apply the concepts learned to potential synthetic pathways to active site mimics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxidation reactions are an important chemical transformation in both academia and industry. Among the major advances in the field has been the development of catalytic processes, which are not only selective and efficient, but also allow the replacement of common stoichiometric oxidants with molecular oxygen, ideally from air at atmospheric pressure. This results in processes with higher atom efficiency, where water is the only side product in line with the principles of green chemistry. Focusing on the use of molecular oxygen as the terminal oxidant, this book covers recent advances in both heterogeneous and homogeneous systems, with and without metals and on the “taming” of the highly reactive oxygen gas by use of micro-flow reactors and membranes. A useful reference for industrial and academic chemists working on oxidation processes, as well as green chemists.

The use of cofactors to supplement the native amino acids of a protein is essential to maintain the chemical capabilities necessary for organisms to survive. This volume focuses on the significant advances of the past decade in identifying and describing new cofactors--either small molecules or those derived posttranslationally.
