Book excerpt: Numerous clothing industries face highly dynamic environments, and growth in this environment depends upon both external and internal factors. External factors are represented by aggressive competition and volatile product demand. Internally, the industry must face an increasingly shorter life cycle of the product and the need to innovate both product and organizational development. The competitive advantage of the industry lies in its ability to design a value-creating system based on the management of both external and internal relationships. The successful management of these relationships relies not only on successful customer relationship management but also on effective product supply and demand upkeep. Management and Inter/Intra Organizational Relationships in the Textile and Apparel Industry provides emerging research exploring relevant theoretical frameworks and the latest empirical research underlining the complexity of management applications within the textile industry. Featuring coverage on a broad range of topics such as consumer relationships, cultural identity, and organizational culture, this book is ideally designed for researchers, academicians, professionals, and students working in various disciplines including management, industrial organization, organizational behavior, human resource management, decision science, design science, and information and communication. Moreover, the book will provide insights and support executives and managers of the textile and apparel industry concerned with the ethic design, contamination, and the management relationships with workers, customers, suppliers, the community, and organizational development.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 1999 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: 1,0, Berlin School of Economics, course: Competitive Strategy and Business Perfomance, language: English, abstract: The clothing market environment is characterised by strong competition, low demand and declining margins. As prices deflate, many manufacturers are producing premium products. The present paper analyses the German clothing company JIL SANDER AG, which is then compared to BOSS AG and ESCADA AG. Despite their different size they all pursue a similar strategy to survive in a highly competitive surrounding: they built up a strong brand, diversify in other lifestyle segments and distribute their products through own mono-brand shops as well as through franchise partners. The main task is to assess the performance of a company like Jil Sander in pursuing this strategy, especially considering its size constraints. This is done by qualitative as well as quantitative analysis in view of a environmental analysis, a financial analysis and a scenario analysis Implementing this strategy, it should be kept in mind that it means less control over franchise partners and factories. The push is on to answer the 'management question' by strengthening the second management level, as a tight control over sales channels will not be possible by the person Jil Sander itself.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Operations Research, grade: B, Stuttgart Institute of Management and Technology, language: English, abstract: In this paper, Austria's jeans and lifestyle branch will be analyzed with particular reference to Porter's competitive strategies. The first part of this paper takes a look at Porter's five competitive strategies and their context. The second part deals with the jeans and lifestyle branch in Austria and the influence of the five competitive strategies on this industry. Competitive strategy provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the forces at the basis of the competition in the industry - summarized by the five competitive forces. This framework illuminates the important branch-specific differences, shows the development of industries and helps companies in finding a unique competitive position. Industries change with increasing pressure and thus industry structures as well as borders between industries are reconfigured. While companies of the nineties are substantially different than in the seventies or eighties, high profitability is still based on cost advantages and differentiation. One might believe that faster development cycles or total quality management are the key to the competition, but the crucial point to determine to what extent these methods influence the competition and the relative cost position of a company as well as its ability to differentiate and to enforce surcharges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fashion industry has not traditionally been associated with definitions of sustainable development and sustainability. The social and environmental challenges faced by the fashion industry concern the entire supply and demand chain, propped up by a throwaway consumer culture. In response to these sustainability challenges, some fashion companies have developed innovative social and environmental initiatives. While many of these initiatives are sympathetic, resourceful and hold real potential for generating social and environmental improvements, greater scale and scope is needed in order to bring about a more fundamental shift in current practices. This Special Issue of the Journal of Corporate Citizenship explores how sustainability can be a driver for exploring new business models within a single industrial setting, highlighting some of the sustainability initiatives that bring hope for a more sustainable future. New Business Models for Sustainable Fashion is a must-read for researchers and practitioners tackling the challenges of an industry in need of large-scale transformation.

Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Economic and Social History, grade: 72%, University of Greenwich (Business), course: International Business Environment, language: English, abstract: In times of globalisation strategic decisions like diversification and international expansion become more and more important. As the economic world is developing into an increasingly intertwined network managers need strategic tools to facilitate their decisions. One of these models is the Five Forces model of Michael Porter. He developed this approach in 1980 in his book Competitive Strategy – Techniques for analysing industries and competitors. He claims that any industry has five basic forces that shape the internal competition. This essay will analyse the underlying theories of the model and the its structure itself and apply it to a case study. The case study portraits the Vietnamese textile industry and their association with the government. By analysing the case study this paper will show the models insufficiencies and how it can be improved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no doubt that the textile industry – the production of clothing, fabrics, thread, fibre and related products – plays a significant part in the global economy. It also frequently operates with disregard to its environmental and social impacts. The textile industry uses large quantities of water and outputs large quantities of waste. As for social aspects, many unskilled jobs have disappeared in regions that rely heavily on these industries. Another serious and still unresolved problem is the flexibility textile industry companies claim to need. Faced with fierce international competition, they are increasingly unable to offer job security. This is without even considering the informal-sector work proliferating both in developing and developed countries. Child labour persists within this sector despite growing pressure to halt it.Fashion demands continuous consumption. In seeking to own the latest trends consumers quickly come to regard their existing garments as inferior, if not useless. "Old" items become unwanted as quickly as new ones come into demand. This tendency towards disposability results in the increased use of resources and thus the accelerated accumulation of waste. It is obvious to many that current fashion industry practices are in direct competition with sustainability objectives; yet this is frequently overlooked as a pressing concern. It is, however, becoming apparent that there are social and ecological consequences to the current operation of the fashion industry: sustainability in the sector has been gaining attention in recent years from those who believe that it should be held accountable for the pressure it places on the individual, as well as its contribution to increases in consumption and waste disposal. This book takes a wide-screen approach to the topic, covering, among other issues: sustainability and business management in textile and fashion companies; value chain management; use of materials; sustainable production processes; fashion, needs and consumption; disposal; and innovation and design. The book will be essential reading for researchers and practitioners in the global fashion business.
