Book Synopsis Interventionist Management Accounting Research by : Petri Suomala
Download or read book Interventionist Management Accounting Research written by Petri Suomala and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interventionist research has been proposed as one way of increasing societal impact of management accounting (MA) research. However, there are no guidelines regarding what sort of phenomena would be the most suitable ones to be studied using research interventions. This book builds on top of the methodological literature of interventionist management accounting research, as well as the published studies applying it. Through selected case studies, Interventionist Management Accounting Research shows how societal impact of MA research can be increased by not only applying IVR approach, but also looking into how MA is used in the borderlines between MA and other organizational functions. In many cases, MA research can provide tools and concepts helping to understand contemporary trends within the business environment, thereby naturally providing potential for increasing the societal impact of scholarly work. In particular, this book discusses how to position empirical research endeavours with interventionist elements in a way to ensure important theory contributions with outcomes interesting also outside the MA academia, whether that means MA practitioners, managers in general or scholars in other fields of management. Aimed at primarily researchers, academics and students in the fields of research methodology, management accounting and interventionist research, this book provides methodological guidance on how to execute research projects with interventionist elements, aiming at strong theory contribution with broader societal impacts. Focusing on research in accounting and management, this book also provides interesting insights to scholars and doctoral students in other fields of management research.

Book Synopsis Management Accounting Research in Practice by : Petri Suomala
Download or read book Management Accounting Research in Practice written by Petri Suomala and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-02-13 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many scholars have claimed that management accounting research has lost its pragmatic relevancy and interventionist research has been proposed as one way to produce theories with increased practical implications. In interventionist research, active participation in the field is regarded as an asset rather than a liability. Despite the methodological debate on interventionist research, there is lack of empirical studies on how interventionist research actually helps to produce theories with such pragmatic relevance. The lack of empirical studies has, perhaps, resulted in a too narrow connotation to the research approach. This book attempts to shed light on the various nuances of interventionist research and the positions a researcher can occupy when trying to produce contributions associated with both theoretical and pragmatic relevance. This book is based on various research projects focusing on different aspects of management accounting during the past ten years. To spice up the academic debate, the book also provides managerial perspectives on interventionist management accounting research with interesting new insights. In addition to management accounting, the ideas of interventionist research can also be applied in other management fields.

Book Synopsis The Societal Relevance of Management Accounting by : Sven Modell

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the relevance of management accounting research and practice for a range of broader, societal phenomena related to corporate governance and regulation, the creation and maintenance of markets and their concomitant social and political implications. It also explores the theoretical and methodological implications of pursuing a research agenda exploring such phenomena in greater detail. Containing a number of theoretical, methodological and empirical contributions by leading management accounting scholars, The Societal Relevance of Management Accounting seeks to advance novel research approaches that go beyond the traditional intra-organisational focus that has long dominated management accounting research. As such, it seeks to enhance the relevance of management accounting research for a broader range of stakeholders and interest groups in and around individual organisations. This book was originally published as a special issue of Accounting and Business Research.
Book Synopsis Is Empirical Management Accounting Research Progressing? Evidence on Its Diversity and Methodological Sophistication Over Three Decades by : Irene Essert
Download or read book Is Empirical Management Accounting Research Progressing? Evidence on Its Diversity and Methodological Sophistication Over Three Decades written by Irene Essert and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper assesses three decades of empirical management accounting research in light of its diversity and methodological sophistication. In doing so, we first address concerns recently voiced by distinguished scholars regarding an increasing homogenization of research approaches that may compromise our understanding of management accounting practice. Second, we complement the methodological papers that have prescribed what researchers should account for to ensure the validity of their findings by evaluating how four important types of validity - internal, external, construct and statistical conclusion validity - are de facto considered. Our study provides initial empirical evidence on these issues based on a quantitative content analysis of 415 papers published in ten leading accounting journals. We find a growing narrowness of research content as management control issues become increasingly prioritized, whereas the range of methods employed remains broad. Given the corresponding disclosures, validity improves over time, suggesting that management accounting research is progressing with respect to its rigor. Based on our findings, we discuss avenues for further research.

Download or read book Roles, Authority and Involvement of the Management Accounting Function written by Caroline Lambert and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent techniques and shifts in the environment are often viewed as leading management accountants to adopt a business orientation. However, empirical evidence pointing to clear shifts in the role played by management accountants remains relatively scarce. From in-depth qualitative research based on 73 interviews in ten multinational companies, we identify four distinct styles of management accounting function: discrete, safeguarding, partner, and omnipotent. We show that each style can be associated with one main role: discrete control of managerial behaviour, socialisation of managers, facilitation of decision-making, and centralisation of power. From this in-depth analysis of management accountants' styles and roles we move on to discuss the authority they hold and the independence/involvement dilemma they face.
