Book excerpt: It is 1950 and, after a disastrous honeymoon night, Ariah Erskine's young husband throws himself into the roaring waters of Niagara Falls. Ariah, "the Widow Bride of the Falls," begins a relentless seven-day vigil in the mist, waiting for his body to be found. At her side is confirmed bachelor and pillar of the community Dirk Burnaby, who is unexpectedly drawn to her. What follows is a passionate love affair, marriage, and family -- a seemingly perfect existence. But tragedy soon takes over their lives, poisoning their halcyon years with distrust, greed, and murder. Set against the mythic-historic backdrop of Niagara Falls in the mid-twentieth century, this haunting exploration of the American family in crisis is a stunning achievement from "one of the great artistic forces of our time" (The Nation). This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.

The novel has all the contemporary drama of greed, revolt, murder, and large-scale drug trafficking. It is the ongoing conflict—and sometimes the clandestine cooperation—between military dictators, drug lords, revolutionary guerillas, politicos, and the different American men and women working in these foreign settings. Intermingled with all the intrigue, there is good humor and romantic competition between two American men for the love and attention of a beautiful Latino woman who also happens to be deeply involved with a guerilla movement that is conspiring to overthrow the military dictator for control of the country.

Book excerpt: A sweeping history of this natural wonder, from its geological beginnings to the present. "The noble cataract reflects the concerns, failings, and fancies of the times. If we gaze deeply into its shimmering image we can perhaps discern our own." - page 22 “[Pierre Berton] makes a serious and convincing case for Niagara's pivotal role in North American history. ... His Niagara is a lodestar for North American culture and invention: site of the first railway suspension bridge, inspiration for Nikola Tesla's discovery of the principle of alternating current, and the subject of Frederic Church's most celebrated landscape; a natural wonder that has bewitched generations of scientists, authors, and utopians, and stimulated innovations and social movements still casting long shadows. ... surprising, rich and engrossing.” -- Thurston Clarke, New York Times Book Review “Canadian historian Berton tells dozens of absorbing tales about the region and those who passed through it ... He tells them all superbly, aided by essential maps and a few reproductions of posters advertising some of the more bizarre stunts.” -- Publishers Weekly “Entertaining. . . . Berton brings to life the adventurers and dreamers, visionaries and industrialists, who over centuries have been drawn to the Falls.” -- Maclean’s "Berton at his storytelling best; there is something here for everyone. ... a vintage, full-bodied read." -- The London Free Press "A book worth diving into." -- Calgary Herald "By turns ironic, amused, shocked, horrified and awestruck, Berton traces Niagara's history through the deeds of those who came in contact with it ... all the while walking the fine line between detachment and emotion with agility and grace." -- The Whig-Standard (Kingston) Pierre Berton was one of Canada’s most popular and prolific authors, and is widely credited with popularizing Canadian history. His previous books include The Wild Frontier, Prisoners of the North, Klondike, The Invasion of Canada, and The Great Depression.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I hope it was worth it!” challenged Spencer. Abqurah countered, “It was! It’s a better way to shoot things than with a Kalashnikov! I wish I could turn all guns in the world into cameras.” From what she showed them on the LCD panel, she did get some pretty pictures of the Arc de Triomphe by night, with yellow headlights beaming down on her from the oncoming traffic. Waldemar (Wally) Guenter wrote a murder mystery, entitled The New Crusades, about Aamir killing his older sister, Hazirah, in a fictional honour-killing at a real place, Ball’s Falls, Ontario, in October 2011. The parents are complicit in this crime because they help Aamir escape to ISIS. The younger sister, Abqurah, does not know about her family’s atrocious plan. Waldemar Guenter, a scenery photographer, discovers Hazirah’s body which prompts him to write the first novel as a kind of therapy. The sequel itself takes up the plot in October 2014 with the last two months of Wally’s life. He is dying of pancreatic cancer. Even as he lay dying, life goes on for his young friends who get engaged and get married with high hopes for their future. Alexander Kucharski the main writer of this sequel, reconnects with his old flame, Lena. Also Detective Ed Spencer, from the first novel, courts and marries, Abqurah, the youngest daughter of the Ibrahims who went to prison for their part in their daughter’s honor-killing. The Spencers become Christian and plan on a lovely honeymoon in Paris. They arrive on Wednesday morning, January 7th, 2014. This couldn’t be at a worse time. Saïd and Chérif Kouachi have just broken into the Charlie Hebdo magazine offices with assault rifles to seek revenge for the magazine’s satirization of their Prophet. By the time they are through, 12 people lie dead and the brothers escape putting Paris on high alert. Ed Spencer and Abqurah’s honeymoon turns into a nightmare...but not all is lost...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With The Silence and the Roar, Nihad Sirees writes a powerful, life-affirming and Kafkaesque novel about a censored writer trying to live a normal life under a Middle Eastern dictatorship, Syria. Fathi, a writer no longer permitted to write, makes his way through a city churned by parades for an unnamed dictator. It is a day stifled by heat and the noise of the chants, a day of people trampled, and of the brutality and bullying of the party faithful. But Fathi presses treacherously against the crowd, attempting just to visit his mother and his girlfriend. The Silence and the Roar (Al Samt wa Al Sakhab) is a personal, urgent, funny and aggrieved novel. It asks what it means to have a conscience, or to laugh, or to endure in a time of the violence, strangeness and roar of tyranny. It is both a true literary achievement and an act of real courage by a brilliant Syrian writer. Nihad Sirees' The Silence and the Roar (Al Samt wa Al Sakhab) is translated from the Arabic by Max Weiss and published by Pushkin Press
