'The River towns of Connecticut: A Study of Wethersfield, Hartford and Windsor' is a work on the local history of America. Charles McLean Andrews was born on February 22, 1863 in Connecticut, America. Andrews attended Trinity College in Connecticut in 1884 where he received his A.B., and following this he obtained his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1889. He was a professor at Bryn Mawr College (1889-1907) and Johns Hopkins University (1907-1910) before going to Yale University. He was the Farnam Professor of American History at Yale from 1910 to his retirement in 1931. Andrews was one of the most distinguished American historians of his time and widely recognised as a leading authority on American colonial history. He is especially known as a leader of the 'Imperial school' of historians who studied, and generally praised, the British Empire of the 18th century.

Book excerpt: Considered by many to be the state's oldest permanent English settlement, Wethersfield is referred to in the Connecticut Code of 1650 as "ye most Auncient Towne." The town was established on the Connecticut River in 1634 and boasts a well-documented Colonial history, as well as an enviable array of historic homes and public buildings that illustrate three centuries of community life. The vintage images in Wethersfield testify to the town's more recent transformation from a rural agricultural hamlet of 2,700 in 1900 to a densely settled suburb of over 26,000 inhabitants today. Growth stimulated by an early transit system, affordable suburban development, a thriving Hartford job market, and subsequent urban redevelopment pulled and pushed hundreds of new families into Wethersfield during a century of prosperity and progress.

From the small group of people who came in 1634, the Town has grown to an estimated population of 23,000. Here is the local town history from 1600-1965. Books and published materials about local history are scarce and hard to obtain for study purposes. Our Committee started to write brief monographs to give the students and teachers some information about the people for whom our schools are named and about the Indians who lived in this area. From that small beginning this book developed.
