Thanks to this, he can begin a journey into the past to encounter once more the day when, as a child, a special teacher led him to witness life experiences of others, of real people. Some of these experiences were painful, others not, but all were crucial to understanding our path through this world. Sometimes, though, that understanding requires the passage of time, the acceptance of our limitations, or the recognition that the transcendent awaits us within ourselves, even if we are lost in the darkest of caves.''

Book excerpt: In the ancient Tamil country, the Vaiyai was much more than a mighty river rushing towards the sea. People knew the river intimately and lived their lives upon its banks. In these exquisite poems from the distant past (second to eighth century CE), we glimpse the ebb and flow of everyday life: the bathing, the water games, the lovers’ quarrels and the sacred rituals. Breathtaking in their descriptive power and graceful in their celebration of sensuality, the Vaiyai poems from the Paripāṭal anthology delight our senses and give us insight into a world long past. In V.N. Muthukumar and Elizabeth Segran’s radiant new translation, the Vaiyai River comes alive to a new generation of readers.

Book excerpt: The remarkable shape of this island at once attracts the attention: and indeed it is in its irregular outline and in the occurrence over a large portion of its surface of submarine tuffs and agglomerates that will be found a key to the study of its history. With an extreme length of 98 miles, an average breadth of 15 to 20 miles, and a maximum elevation of nearly 3,500 feet, it has an area, estimated at 2,400 square miles, comparable with that of the county of Devon. Whilst its peculiarly long and narrow dimensions are to be associated with the narrowing of the submarine basaltic platform, from which it rises together with the other large island of Viti Levu, its extremely irregular shape is closely connected with the composite mode of its origin. We have here exemplified the process of the building up of a continental island in the great area of emergence of the Western Pacific, that region which displays at various heights above the sea the ancient reefs and the underlying deposits of the Solomon Islands, New Hebrides, Fiji, Tonga, &c. But this process of construction has never been completed, and is at present suspended; yet it is in its incomplete condition that Vanua Levu possesses its importance for the investigation of this subject. This island has in fact been formed by the union of a number of smaller volcanic islands during a long protracted period of emergence. These original islands are indicated approximately by the 1,800-feet contour-level in the accompanying map. There is, however, no reason for supposing that the movement of emergence has altogether ceased. In the course of ages the extensive submarine plateau, from which it rises, will be laid bare; and the small surrounding islands that are situated upon it, such as Yanganga, Kia, Mali, Rambi, Kioa, &c., will be included in the area of Vanua Levu.

Book excerpt: The Red River Gorge's intricate canyon system features an abundance of high sandstone cliffs, rock shelters, waterfalls, and natural bridges, making it one of the world's top rock-climbing destinations. The Gorge, known for its unspoiled scenic beauty and numerous hiking trails, is one of Kentucky's most popular natural destinations, attracting over 500,000 visitors a year. While books about hiking, climbing, and other recreational activities in the area are readily available, Wildflowers and Ferns of Red River Gorge is the first book specifically devoted to the biodiversity of the Gorge and its watershed. Authors Dan and Judy Dourson introduce the geology and cultural history of the gorge but focus on the incredible diversity of both common and rare flora of this unique ecosystem. With over 1,000 color images and numerous illustrations covering over 1,500 species currently known to exist in the watershed, Wildflowers and Ferns of Red River Gorge is designed to be accessible to the casual hiker and of use to the seasoned naturalist. Rare and endangered species are highlighted as well as a few other important, but often ignored, non-flowering plant groups, including green algae, fungi, slime molds, lichens, and mosses. In addition, a small section on flowering woody vines, shrubs, and trees is included, making the book the most comprehensive natural guide to one of Kentucky's most well-known natural recreational areas.

Book excerpt: In a world where nature’s voice is slowly fading, "Sanctuary of Earth" offers a powerful narrative that echoes with the urgency of our times. This book delves deep into the heart of our planet’s most vulnerable ecosystems, bringing to life the final struggles of the forests, oceans, deserts, and other natural sanctuaries that once flourished with untamed beauty. Each chapter is a poignant reminder of the consequences of environmental degradation, painting vivid pictures of wildernesses on the brink, where every sound, every movement, is a testament to nature’s resilience against overwhelming odds. From the haunting silence of dying forests to the last whispers of a desert fighting for survival, "Sanctuary of Earth" invites readers to walk alongside the guardians of these fragile worlds. The book takes you on a journey from the depths of the ocean, where the last sentinels of the deep stand guard, to the final migrations across tundras and prairies, where the echoes of life persist despite the encroaching shadows of extinction. The struggle of bees in their dwindling hives, the fight of wildflowers in meadows against a vanishing wind, and the silent stories of glaciers as they melt into memory-all are captured in this deeply interconnected narrative that speaks to the resilience of life and the delicate balance we are in danger of losing. "Sanctuary of Earth" is not just a book; it’s a call to action. It’s a reminder that these ecosystems are not just stories on a page but living, breathing entities that need our protection now more than ever. As you turn the pages, you’ll find yourself immersed in the symphony of the seas, the final stand of ancient forests, and the battle for the last gardens of Eden. This book is a reflection on the beauty that remains and a plea for humanity to recognize its role in preserving the last sanctuaries of our Earth before they are lost to us forever.
