Book Synopsis Catholic Priests Falsely Accused by : David F. Pierre
Download or read book Catholic Priests Falsely Accused written by David F. Pierre and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2013-02-21 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We must continue to demand justice and compassion for victims of Catholic clergy abuse. This is not optional. Time and time again in recent years, Catholics and non-Catholics alike have been horrified by hideous stories of wretched abuse and betrayal. However, there is a side of the Catholic Church abuse narrative that is not getting the attention it warrants. Countless priests in the United States have been falsely accused of committing horrendous child abuse. Topics in this book include: ... how the most recent figures indicate that one third of accused priests have been accused falsely; ... the stunning court declaration with the opinion from a retired FBI investigator that "one half" of all accusations are "entirely false" or "greatly exaggerated"; ... the American cardinal who has been the target of two bogus abuse charges; ... how accusers have retained huge monetary settlements even though their allegations later proved to be false; ... the father of an accuser who appeared at the funeral of an accused priest and apologized for the false allegation that his son leveled; ... the Catholic archbishop who tells of being spat upon by a member of SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests); ... the monsignor who waited five years to be exonerated of abuse charges even though his alleged victims denied that they were molested; plus much more.
Book Synopsis Tales of High Priests and Taxes by : Sylvie Honigman
Download or read book Tales of High Priests and Taxes written by Sylvie Honigman and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2021-03-16 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of the conquests of Alexander the Great, the ancient world of the Bible—the ancient Near East—came under Greek rule, and in the land of Israel, time-old traditions met Greek culture. But with the accession of King Antiochos IV, the soft power of culture was replaced with armed conflict, and soon the Jews rebelled against their imperial masters, as recorded in the Biblical books of the Maccabees. Whereas most scholars have dismissed the biblical accounts of religious persecution and cultural clash, Sylvie Honigman combines subtle literary analysis with deep historical insight to show how their testimony can be reconciled with modern historical analysis by conversing with the biblical authors, so to speak, in their own language to understand the ways they described their experiences. Honigman contends that these stories are not mere fantasies but genuine attempts to cope with the massacre that followed the rebellion by giving it new meaning. This reading also discloses fresh political and economic factors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thrilling action, suspense and mystery abound in this historical novel, inspired by the books of Kings and Chronicles in the Old Testament of the Bible. Highlighting the latter days of King Solomon in the city of Jerusalem in Ancient Israel, the novel is a real page-turner that moves with the speed of an arrow. In addition to the aged King Solomon, Biblical characters include Jeroboam, a former governor in Israel, accused of plotting against Solomon and now exiled in Ancient Egypt; Ahijah, a wandering prophet, a friend and former servant of Jeroboam; Iddo, a blind seer; Rehoboam, Solomon's favorite son and designated heir; Zabud, Solomon's long-time friend; Qoheleth, a fanatical supporter of Jeroboam; Gallim, the mayor of Bethel; Berechiah, captain of the Bethel town guard; Nathan, the prophet; King David and his son, Adonijah; the girl, Abishag; Ethan, the sage; and Azariah, the young and ambitious High Priest.
Book Synopsis Prophets, Priests and Politics by : Stephen Disraeli
Download or read book Prophets, Priests and Politics written by Stephen Disraeli and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2024-03-28 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prophets of the Old Testament were speaking, in the first instance, to the people of their own time. This means that we need to locate the prophets in the history of their own time, in order to understand them in the first instance. I propose to survey Israel’s history mainly in terms of the work and role of the prophets, from Moses to Malachi. Of course, they were interacting with the temple priesthood and with the disciples of Machiavelli, who cannot be left out of the story. God himself is in the background of this history, pursuing his purposes through these events and making his will known, which brings us back to the prophets. I’ve been a student of history since I was nine years old, a simple transition from an interest in maps. My mind itches, instinctively, to arrange things in chronological order. In fact, I was trying to synchronise the kings and prophets, for my own interest, while I was still at school. However, this will not be an academic work. My chief source of information will be the Old Testament itself. The story is told from a Christian viewpoint, or even a Protestant viewpoint, as will be evident from time to time. Yet faith will not be over-powering the critical spirit. The charioteer will be running these two horses as a team.

Book Synopsis Cattle, Priests, and Progress in Medicine by : Calvin W. Schwabe
Download or read book Cattle, Priests, and Progress in Medicine written by Calvin W. Schwabe and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1978-05-26 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cattle, Priests, and Progress in Medicine was first published in 1978. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. The author shows that over the centuries many of the most significant breakthroughs in improving humans health have been closely associated with observations and experiments on animals other than man. Because human medical progress has been so dependent on veterinary studies, he urges that schools of veterinary medicine assume a much greater role in the training of persons for research in human medicine. To illuminate the historical link between animals and man in medical progress, Professor Schwabe recounts highlights in the history of medicine from ancient times onward. He describes the early history of man in terms of animal cultures, focusing on the prehistoric Nile Valley, and points to similarities in medical knowledge between present-day "cattle" societies in Northeastern Africa and the ancient people of the Nile. He discusses the comparative healers of ancient Egypt, the comparative foundations of Greek medicine, the Arabic contribution, Sicily and the beginnings of modern medicine, and subsequent developments through the Renaissance .Bringing the history down to modern times, Professor Schwabe emphasizes the role of veterinary medicine in medical research. He outlines specific reforms in the curricula of schools and colleges of veterinary medicine which would provide for the education of medical investigators.

Book Synopsis Priests in Exile by : Meron M. Piotrkowski
Download or read book Priests in Exile written by Meron M. Piotrkowski and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Priests in Exile is the first comprehensive scholarly opus in English to reconstruct the history of the mysterious Temple of Onias, a Jewish temple built by a Jerusalemite high priest in his Egyptian exile that functioned in parallel with the Temple of Jerusalem. Piotrkowski’s book addresses a topic that is mysterious, important and anomalous: a Jewish community of mercenary priests in the (Egyptian) Diaspora in which the priestly sacrificial ritual was carried out daily over a period of more than two hundred years until the first century CE, outlasting the Jerusalem Temple by about three years. Although the book focuses on the very circumscribed topic of the parallel Temple it casts a wide net, placing the story in the context of Jewish Diaspora life in ancient times. Ancient topics and texts are brought to bear, including papyri, epigraphy, archaeology, as well as the modern literature. Piotrkowski throws new light on a fascinating episode of ancient Jewish history that is usually left in the dark.
