Book excerpt: Here's the first book to shed light on an alternative resource strategy: the use of Interim Management for Marketing and Sales functions. "Leadership on Demand" aims to debunk the two-headed myth that performance-robbing gaps in Sales and Marketing are business as usual and too expensive to fix. The revenue engine of any organization is its Marketing and Sales team. When the engine is in tune and firing on all cylinders the company grows, revenue climbs, market share expands. However, when there are gaps in the Marketing and Sales organization the engines performance sputters. What gaps? Vacancies in key positions that exist for months on end; temporary bandwidth gaps that prevent the company from jumping on market opportunities; and gaps in the necessary skill sets required to achieve key objectives. This book is written for the busy CEO or COO. Using executive interviews and case studies to both illustrate and punctuate their points, authors Besondy and Travis paint a clear and concise picture of the problems caused by talent gaps in Marketing and Sales, how to recognize the issues, and how to solve the issues with interim managers (also referred to as interim leaders, fractional managers, and on-demand executives). Performance gaps in Sales and Marketing rob your company of business momentum. And the sad truth is thousands of companies in the U.S. today consider the decline of performance as acceptable, or at least unavoidable.

Book excerpt: There are specific topics which, in microcosm, bring together many of the strands of a whole society. The pressures at work in responding to the problems involved in these topics both in implementing and retarding their resolution, provide a unique insight into the strains of our time. In many ways, the subject of growth controls is a prime exemplar of this species. Grouped under this rubric are all the environmental concerns which are increasingly prominent: the natural limits of land-holding capacity, the trade-offs between intensive land use, and the physical limitations of earth and space. But these elements, while far from being defined, are much more finite than the particulars at the other end of the spectrum that of the character and individual substance and way of life, which revolve around the level of intensity of land use. For example, as we near the end of the twentieth century, an increasing demand is heard for a return to the simpler, more bucolic environment. Just as the suburb replaced the city as the prime location so the suburb in turn finds it very difficult to compete against the lures of the countryside. The drive towards exurbia, and with is greater levels of decentralization, and with it greater levels of decentralization becomes a dominant theme, at least for the affluent. All these and many other elements are at work within the simple title of Growth Management.

Book excerpt: Interim Management provides practical advice on how to succeed as an interim manager. In this candid appraisal of interim management, Russell demonstrates the pitfalls and benefits of being an interim manager. Interim managers are most definitely not 'between jobs', but are a new breed of 'portfolio worker'. They are trained, professional, temporary managers, hired by organizations that need to increase their management strengths for a short period. They help to solve resourcing problems eg *they provide cover for someone who is absent or during a long recruitment campaign *they handle projects that could deflect senior management attention away from key objectives *international specialists provide help with acquiring, integrating, running and overhauling businesses overseas. Unlike consultants they take on full responsibility for the process and the outcome - they manage and do rather than analyse and recommend. They become part of the client team. There are approximately 10 - 15,000 interim managers in the UK. The market is increasing by at least 30% per annum. Book excerpt: Globally, women are facing social, economic, and cultural barriers impeding their autonomy and agency. Accelerated women empowerment programs often fail to attain their targets as envisaged by the policymakers due to a variety of reasons, with the most prominent being the deep-rooted cultural norms ingrained within society. In the era of globalization, empowerment of women demands new approaches and strategies that encourage the mainstreaming of gender equality as a societal norm. The Handbook of Research on New Dimensions of Gender Mainstreaming and Women Empowerment is a critical scholarly publication that examines global gender issues and new strategies for the promotion of women empowerment and gender mainstreaming in various spheres of women’s lives, including education and ICT, economic participation, health and sexuality, mental health, aging, law and judiciary, leadership, and decision making. It provides a comprehensive coverage of all major gender issues with novel ideas on gender mainstreaming being contributed by men and women authors from multidisciplinary backgrounds. Gender perspective and intersectional approach in the discourses make this handbook a unique contribution to the scholarship of social sciences and humanities. The book provides new theoretical inputs and practical directions to academicians, sociologists, social workers, psychologists, managers, lawyers, policy makers, and government officials in their efforts at gender mainstreaming. With a wide range of conceptual richness, this handbook is an excellent reference guide to students and researchers in programs pertaining to gender/women's studies, cultural studies, economics, sociology, social work, medicine, law, and management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social workers have long fought to bring diversity, inclusiveness, and economic justice to the communities in which they serve, but for decades the internal practices of the profession have contradicted its public persona, perpetuating myths and misconceptions about women of color and their ability to teach and lead. In these essays African American, Asian American, Latina, Pacific Islander, and Native American women share their experiences working within the field of social work, describing their rise to leadership and their efforts to maintain authority. Emphasizing themes of social change and justice, these narratives make visible the unique challenges faced by leaders and administrators of color, an issue that continues to affect women within the field today. Trading on decades of experience, Halaevalu F. O. Vakalahi and Wilma Peebles-Wilkins choose essays that specifically examine concerns and techniques facilitating the development of women of color as leaders. Their lessons inform future research, policy, and practice and are sure to enhance scholarship on diversity within the profession. There is even a chapter written by a university vice president, who focuses entirely on working within the academy. Altogether, these contributors prove that culturally based paradigms of leadership, historically devalued and suppressed, are crucial to women on the rise.

Book excerpt: In The Rise of the States, noted urban historian Jon C. Teaford explores the development of state government in the United States from the end of the nineteenth century to the so-called renaissance of states at the end of the twentieth. Arguing that state governments were not lethargic backwaters that suddenly stirred to life in the 1980s, Teaford shows instead how state governments were continually adapting and expanding throughout the past century. While previous historical scholarship focused on the states, if at all, as retrograde relics of simpler times, Teaford describes how states actively assumed new responsibilities, developed new sources of revenue, and created new institutions. Teaford examines the evolution of the structure, function, and finances of state government during the Progressive Era, the 1920s, the Great Depression, the post–World War II years, and the post–reapportionment era beginning in the late 1960s. State governments, he explains, played an active role not only in the creation, governance, and management of the political units that made up the state but also in dealing with the growth of business, industries, and education. Not all states chose the same solutions to common problems. For Teaford, the diversity of responses points to the growing vitality and maturity of state governments as the twentieth century unfolded.
