Download or read book Eagles Ascending written by Mark Megehee and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-08-27 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eagles Ascending begins with the union of two petty states, the Mark of Brandenburg and the Duchy of Prussia in 1618, which led at the end of the 17th Century to the Kingdom of Prussia in a dizzying rise of political and military power in less than a century. Before there could be Frederick The Great, there had to be Frederick Wilhelm, "The Great Elector." This fascinating account traces the origins and rise to dominance of Brandenburg-Prussia across the 17th Century, and introduces readers to the remarkable men who laid the foundations for the later German Empire, it's Army and Navy. Information, much of it appearing in English for the first time, makes the "mover and shakers" of a distant era spring to life, their portrayals made more compelling by superb period artwork, maps, and plans. Here are the wars, battles and leaders who by land and sea shaped the emergence from medieval to modern Germany. The lively narrative is enhanced by twenty-six original full color plates specifically researched for this work detailing the development of the uniforms of Brandenburg-Prussia in the century in which modern military uniforms began. Tactics, and the ever more sophisticated weapons which determined them in the 17th Century, are detailed as well. Conflicts such as the Scanian War, the First Northern War, and the War of the League of Augsburg, mark the progression of Brandenburg-Prussia from weakling to king maker status. Orders of battle, ship plans, period and new battle maps contribute to this splendid foray into the history of a proto-nation rising to greatness in a century more violent even than our own. Complete with footnotes, bibliography, and thoroughly indexed, this book fills a void in English language literature of the military roots and first "Blitkriegs" of German Armies to come. Historians, war gamers, modelers, painters of military miniatures, and even the casual reader will find Eagles Ascending a compelling introduction to a distant time, yet one that affected the shape of the world to this day.

Book Synopsis The Cultivation of Monarchy and the Rise of Berlin by : Karin Friedrich
Download or read book The Cultivation of Monarchy and the Rise of Berlin written by Karin Friedrich and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The start of the eighteenth century witnessed the elevation of Prussia to monarchic status, a reflection of the rising importance of the Hohenzollern dynasty within the Empire as well as in Central Europe. In tandem with this, Berlin came to the fore as the capital city of Brandenburg, with the establishment there of the royal court. This volume makes available for the first time a selection of the diverse printed and visual materials relating to these developments. In their introduction to the documents, the editors explore the historical, political and cultural context of the rise of the Hohenzollerns and the significance of the 1701 coronation of Friedrich III as King in Prussia. The materials provided in the original, as well as in English translation, are wide-ranging. Points of focus include the dynasty's cultivation of the arts and learning, its festive culture, the structure of the court and the nature of Friedrich's reign. Particular attention is given to the ceremonial procedure and festivities surrounding his coronation recorded by the court poet, Johann von Besser. This collection of materials acts as a commentary on Baroque kingship, revealing the manner in which the early eighteenth-century monarch wished to present himself to the outside world and enhance his legitimacy among European rulers. It also offers valuable insights into a key stage in the political and cultural history of Brandenburg-Prussia, the consequences of which exercised a crucial impact on the development of Germany and the history of Europe.

Iron Kingdom is not just good: it is everything a history book ought to be ... The nemesis of Prussia has cast such a long shadow that German historians have tiptoed around the subject. Book Synopsis Anglo-Prussian Relations 1701–1713 by : Crawford Matthews
Download or read book Anglo-Prussian Relations 1701–1713 written by Crawford Matthews and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-02-20 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1701, Frederick I crowned himself the first King in Prussia. This title required a process of royal status construction in conjunction with other European rulers, and Frederick found his most willing partners in the English monarchy. This volume examines their ceremonial and military cooperation. Diplomatic ceremonial was the medium through which the English state and its representatives recognised the new royal rank of the Hohenzollern dynasty. In exchange, Frederick engaged in extensive military cooperation with the English in the War of the Spanish Succession. Yet English statesmen and diplomats also instrumentalised Anglo-Prussian relations for their own status production, furthering their careers and elevating their rank via the symbolic construction of Prussian royal dignity. This book investigates this reciprocal construction of status and rank, exploring the aims and actions of actors involved, and assessing the extent to which they succeeded. Consequently, this book represents an actor-centred work of ‘new diplomatic history’ that simultaneously reinterprets the reign of Frederick I and assesses a crucial yet understudied chapter in the rise of Prussia. This book will appeal to scholars and students of early modern diplomatic history, as well as general readers interested in the history of England and Prussia.
Book Synopsis Gender and Politics in Eighteenth-Century Sweden by : Elise M. Dermineur
Download or read book Gender and Politics in Eighteenth-Century Sweden written by Elise M. Dermineur and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book retraces the life and experience of Princess Louisa Ulrika of Prussia (1720-1782), who became queen of Sweden, with a particular emphasis on her political role and activities. As crown princess (1744-1751), queen (1751-1771) and then queen dowager (1771-1782) of Sweden, Louisa Ulrika took an active role in political matters. From the moment she arrived in Sweden, and throughout her life, Louisa Ulrika worked tirelessly towards increasing the power of the monarchy. Described variously as fierce, proud, haughty, intelligent, self-conscious of her due royal prerogatives, filled with political ambitions, and accused by many of her contemporaries of wanting to restore absolutism, she never diverted from her objective to make the Swedish monarchy stronger, despite obstacles and adversities. As such, she embodied the perfect example of a female consort who was in turn a political agent, instrument and catalyst. More than just a biography, this book places Louisa Ulrika within the wider European context, thus shedding light on gender and politics in the early modern period.
