Book excerpt: Legal disputes over worldwide, including the U.S., sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests, and over efforts by Roman Catholic bishops to conceal clerical misconduct, have produced many headlines and public discussion. However, the precise legal issues involved remain a mystery to most observers. In this study, James O'Reilly and Margaret Chalmers examine the role of canon law in these cases and the interplay between the global church-based law and the laws of individual jurisdictions where criminal actions and lawsuits are brought.

Book excerpt: When Monsignor Patrick Nixon assumes the role of bishop for his California diocese in May 2006, he also accepts responsibility for resolving 161 lawsuits alleging despicable acts of Clerical Sexual Abuse. Unable to rely upon the former bishop’s insight, knowledge, and experience - for he now lies in a coma after suffering a major stroke surely prompted by the stress of the misconduct litigation - acting bishop Nixon prays for strength and guidance as he tries to understand the myriad financial, legal, and insurance issues. His hope to resolve the claims and compensate the legitimately injured victims is frustrated by a powerful personal injury litigator whose true objective appears to be the destruction of the diocese, an unfriendly judicial system that penalizes apology and a hard-nosed insurance executive who has denied all coverage and liability for the abuse claims. Assisting the acting bishop, however, is the newly hired diocesan risk manager, Bethany Griffin, a spiritually challenged former insurance executive. With jury trials looming and time to settle rapidly running out, it seems only a miracle can save the diocese from devastating verdicts - and a miracle is what’s also required if Bethany is to overcome a tragic past that defies comprehension and have her faith in God restored.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many members of the Catholic Church today--clergy as well as laity--find no useful purpose for the Church's legal structure, or canon law. They may view canon law as arbitrary, antiquated, or even a hindrance to the movement of the Spirit, especially within the context of developments following the Second Vatican Council. Kevin E. McKenna counters this attitude with an overview of the positive features of Church law and a modern analysis of the canonical tradition of the Church. McKenna argues that the utilization of canon law in the Church today is not only desirable, but necessary and that it can be highly constructive when the law is viewed as a ministry of service. The call of the Church since Vatican II has been towards communion--with Christ, among Christians, and between local churches. The concept of communion provides a structure and a path that can clarify and encourage individual participation in developing the common good. After a discussion of the development of Church law and the effect Pope Paul VI and Pope John Paul II have had on contemporary canon law, McKenna's work underscores the role of canon law in highlighting the rights of all members of the Church. Canon law is necessary to assist in the orderly carrying out of the gospel demands and to protect the freedom of individual Church members. Practical applications of canon law include the annulment process and alternatives for resolving disputes within the Christian community. The Ministry of Law in the Church Today provides practical guidance and rationale for the role of law in the Church for pastoral ministers who are accustomed to seeing canon law as a problem rather than a solution. This book will also appeal to laity who harbor a curiosity about the usefulness of Church law in everyday Christian life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "To say that this is a good book is to say nothing. To advise one to read it for entertainment is sacrilege. To urge its reading for information, or even for inspiration, is to reveal a lack of insight. This book is a revelation of hell on earth, of the existence of a malignant wickedness and evil in this world. If any man can read it and not be stirred to his depths, it is because he has no depths." --Norman Vincent Peale, from the foreword First published in 1942, Leo Stein's account of the imprisonment of Lutheran pastor Martin Niemoeller recounts face-to-face discussions with Hitler. Martin Niemoeller was ordained as a Lutheran pastor in 1924. He was a hero during World War I, a German naval lieutenant and U-boat commander. He was also one of the earliest and most vocal critics of Nazism. As the Third Reich moved toward the obliteration of the Christian Church, Niemoeller, along with other pastors, formed the Pastor's Emergency League to protect the church and its ministers from imprisonment and destruction. Pastor Niemoeller's was one of the early, stentorian calls for overseas aid, with a major manifesto appearing in an issue of Time magazine just prior to the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Niemoeller was protected until 1937, when he was found guilty of treason. He was sent for "re-education" and spent the remainder of World War II at Sachsenhausen, Mobait, and Dachau. He lived a life of distinction, serving as president of the World Council of Churches and actively speaking out against nuclear armament and military alliances until his death at age ninety-two in 1984. Leo Stein served as a doctor of jurisprudence and church law and was teaching at the University of Berlin when he was arrested and summarily imprisoned for crimes of treason, his book on the Russian Revolution held as the sole "evidence" against him. This book was written following his emigration to the United States.
