Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rhetoric and Oratory The aim of this book is to give the precepts for the building of a speech, and at the same time to place under the eye of both professor and student the speech built according to these precepts. Some works give the precepts alone, but not the complete illustrations, others supply the orations, but do not indicate how they were formed. They give neither the division of parts, nor the principles upon which to construct a discourse. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rhetoric of Oratory This book is a treatise on oratorical composition. While adapted to the needs of public speakers generally, it is intended primarily as a text-book for school and college students. That the young men who are being sent forth annually from our schools and colleges should receive some training in the theory and art of public speech would seem to require no argument. We are a nation of speechmakers, notwithstanding the fact that many good people would have it otherwise. It is sometimes claimed that the press in modern times has supplanted the orator, but a moment's observation of actual conditions will show how unfounded is this contention. There never was a time when oratory constituted so potent a factor in the national life as it does to-day. There never was a time when a talent for public speech brought so much political and social influence. The press has not supplanted the orator, and in the very nature of things it never can; for the personal relation of speaker and hearer can never be supplied by the lifeless type. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Class Book on Rhetoric: Wherein Are Exhibited the Graces and Style of English Composition and Public Oratory In presenting this work on Rhetoric to the people of Canada, I do not feel it necessary to apologize in view of a doubts existing in the mind of any enlightened person with regard to the usefulness and importance of such a publication. The present edition I have reason to hope will be unencumbered with typographical errors, while as the reader will perceive, very useful and interesting matter is added to the former one: sections and sentences supposed to be unnecessary in this work have been lopped off; and upon the whole the author is pleased in indulging a hope that it will meet the wants of the country, and the kind approbation of his present patrons and numerous friends. As many are aware the grand object of the work is to give necessary instructions to all who desire them on the rules and exercises of English composition and public speaking; and as we live in an age of improvement all must be convinced of the importance of lessons of instruction being published on this subject. This department of knowledge has too long been neglected in this Province, and it is a matter of deep regret that instructions upon the art have hitherto been limited to our colleges and higher institutions of learning, and yet no study is more intimately connected with public life, public manners and refinement, than the most valuable and interesting study of Rhetoric. It is true there are a few Rhetorics to be obtained in different sections of the Province, but they are so few in number and so rarely found as to most imperiously demand the present publication. The former, although not specially distinguished for eloquence, was regarded as a most capable speaker; the latter was a great orator. It is much to be regretted that none of his speeches has survived but some idea of their lofty patriotism may be gained from those put into his mouth by Thucydides, while the genuine fragments, several of which have been preserved in Aristotle, are characterized by impressive vividness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Rhetoric and Oratory, Vol. 2 of 2: Delivered to the Classes of Senior and Junior Sophisters in Harvard University Finally the discourse may apply to several propositions, entirely distinct and separate from each other. In such cases the orator is sometimes compelled by the abundance of his subject to di vide his discourse into several distinct orations, each of itself complete. The proposition is sometimes used to express the object to be obtained in consequence of the measure proposed; and in these cases a number of subordinate propositions may be combined for the accomplishment of one. Thus in Burke's speech on conciliation with America, immediately after the exordium and the narration, he says the proposition is peace. Not peace through the me dium of war; not peace to be hunted through the labyrinth of intricate and endless negotiations; not peace to arise out of universal discord, foment ed from principle in all parts of the empire; not peace to depend on the juridical determination of perplexing questions, or the precise marking the shadowy boundaries of a complex government. It is simple peace; sought in its natural course. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of an Oration This manual is the outgrowth of nearly twenty years' experience in teaching rhetoric, in its various forms and applications, to successive classes of college students. Much of it was given originally as informal and unwritten lectures to classes in oratorical composition. Later these lectures were committed to writing for the purpose of making them more useful to my pupils. It is hoped that the informal style and methods of the classroom will not detract from the usefulness of the book. The aim of the following pages is preeminently practical. Their purpose is to present as clearly and definitely as may be the distinctions between the oration and other forms of discourse, and to set forth concretely and specifically the fundamental methods that must be pursued by him who would attain success in oratorical composition. No attempt is made to teach the higher and finer forms of oratorical style. What is the use of trying to teach in a book what can not be taught or learned, in any large and satisfying measure, in the classroom or from a book? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Golden Age of American Oratory Although the Revolutionary orators ushered in this Golden Age of our Eloquence, no attempt has been made to describe them; because such a de scription now must be, at best, only a second-hand copy of their traditionary lineaments. Many of the illustrative remarks and conversa tions alluded to in this volume, especially of Mr. Clay, Mr. Webster, and Mr. Choate, were expressed directly to the author, or in his presence, by these gentlemen. He has not, however, thought it worth while to particularize these instances in the text; except where an important principle is asserted by such eminent authorities, or an important historical fact is narrated.
