Book excerpt: The Rhesus Monkey discusses the use of the rhesus monkey as a test subject in biomedical research. This text provides information that is essential for research that involves the rhesus monkey, from conditioning a wild rhesus monkey to restoring it to its natural state after the tests that it is subjected to. This book covers the phases a rhesus monkey specimen will go through in an experiment. Each chapter covers different facets of using a rhesus monkey as a test subject, including selecting a suitable specimen, conditioning, medication, nourishment, breeding, and pathological threats. Researchers in all fields will find this book an invaluable source of information regarding the best use of rhesus monkeys as research subjects.

Book excerpt: Spontaneous Pathology of the Laboratory Non-human Primate serves as a "go to" resource for all pathologists working on primates in safety assessment studies. In addition, it helps diagnostic veterinary pathologists rule out spontaneous non-clinical disease pathologies when assigning cause of death to species in zoological collections. Primate species included are rhesus, cynomolgus macaques and marmosets. Multi-authored chapters are arranged by organ system, thus providing the necessary information for continued research.Pathologists often face a lack of suitable reference materials or historical data to determine if pathologic changes they are observing in monkeys are spontaneous or a consequence of other treatments or factors. - Contains color illustrations that depict the most common lesions to augment descriptions - Covers descriptions that are compliant with the International Harmonization of Nomenclature and Diagnostic Criteria (INHAND) guidelines set forth by the Society of Toxicologic Pathology (STP) - Provides pathologists with common terms that are compliant with the FDA's Standard for Exchange of Nonclinical Data (SEND) guidelines

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Age is a nonreversible risk factor for atherosclerosis. The atherosclerotic process begins early in life, progresses during the middle years, and usually culminates in clinical disease towards the later years of the life span. Since atherosclerosis is a multifactorial disease, and many of the "risk factors" are time- and age related, it has been difficult to sort out intrinsic aging from environmental factors that operate over many years. Furthermore, the role of genetic factors remains unknown. This workshop has produced much worthwhile information that is helping elucidate the impact of age on atherogenesis. Important strides have been made in understanding the role of changes in the arterial wall and of lipoproteins, platelets, and monocyte-derived macrophages in the disease process. In parallel, our understanding of the biology of aging has increased sufficiently so that these two areas of interest can now profitably intersect. The proceedings of this successful workshop emphasize that there is much to be gained by continued interaction between those scientists interested in the biology of aging at all levels and those interested in the atherosclerotic process. Hopefully, we may eventually progress in our understanding and reach the stage when atherosclerosis will no longer be an inexorable concomitant of human aging. Edwin L. Bierman, M. D. The book discusses animal medicine, experimental methods and techniques, design and management of animal facilities, and legislation on laboratory animals. Several papers discuss the biology and diseases of mice, hamsters, guinea pigs, and rabbits. Another paper addresses the dog and cat as laboratory animals, including sourcing of these animals, housing, feeding, and their nutritional needs, as well as breeding and colony management. The book also describes ungulates as laboratory animals, including topics on sourcing, husbandry, preventive medical treatments, and housing facilities. One paper addresses primates as test animals, covering the biology and diseases of old world primates, Cebidae, and ferrets. Some papers pertain to the treatment, diseases, and needed facilities for birds, amphibians, and fish. Other papers then deal with techniques of experimentation, anesthesia, euthanasia, and some factors (spontaneous diseases) that complicate animal research. The text can prove helpful for scientists, clinical assistants, and researchers whose work involves laboratory animals.

This group of viruses includes human simplex type 1 and 2, Epstein–Barr virus, Kaposi's Sarcoma-associated herpesvirus, cytomegalovirus, HHV6A, 6B and 7, and varicella-zoster virus. The viral diseases and cancers they cause are significant and often recurrent. Their prevalence in the developed world accounts for a major burden of disease, and as a result there is a great deal of research into the pathophysiology of infection and immunobiology. Another important area covered within this volume concerns antiviral therapy and the development of vaccines. All these aspects are covered in depth, both scientifically and in terms of clinical guidelines for patient care. The text is illustrated generously throughout and is fully referenced to the latest research and developments.

Book excerpt: The Rhesus Monkey, Volume I: Anatomy and Physiology discusses the anatomic and physiological measurement, microscopic anatomy, learning, skills, general behavior, and vocalization of rhesus monkey. The rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) is widely used for biomedical and psychological studies. Accordingly, an enormous fund of scientific information is available in papers and some collected data. This book is generally a collection of data from over 2000 papers on rhesus monkey. It covers topics on the cerebral angiography, electrocardiogram, and vector cardiogram of the rhesus monkey. It also provides additional information on morphology and function of rhesus kidney; the development and eruption of teeth in rhesus; and the histology and histochemistry of the rhesus monkey. This book serves as an invaluable reference work for all who work with this primate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of birth defects has assumed an importance even greater now than in the past because mortality rates attributed to congenital anomalies have declined far less than those for other causes of death, such as infectious and nutritional diseases. It is estimated that as many as 50% of all pregnancies terminate as miscarriages. In the majority of cases this is the result of faulty development. Major congenital malformations are found in at least 2% of all liveborn infants, and 22% of all stillbirths and infant deaths are associated with severe congenital anomalies. Teratological studies of an experimental nature are neither ethical nor justifiable in humans. Numerous investigations have been carried out in laboratory animals and other experimental models in order to improve our understanding of abnormal intra-uterine development. In less than two decades the field of experimental teratology has advanced phenomenally. As a result of the wide range of information that is now accumulating, it has become possible to obtain an insight into the causes, mec.;hanisms and prevention of birth defects. However, considerable work will be needed before these problems can be resolved. The· contributions in this volume deal primarily with the areas of terato logical evaluation and the use of selected animal models for the study of con genital anomalies. It is not only a documentation of the latest experimental work, but it also indicates new and important areas for future research.

Book excerpt: In the present study, a Serial Probe Recognition (SPR) task was evaluated as an environmental enrichment device for nonhuman primates. Twenty-one rhesus monkeys were assigned to two experimental groups, one group male (n=15) and one group female (n=6). Urinary cortisol levels, which correlate positively with stress, were measured to determine the effectiveness SPR as an environmental enrichment device, with baseline measurements taken before the onset of the task, and experimental measurements taken during SPR training. Results showed that cortisol levels were significantly higher during the SPR condition than during the baseline condition.
