Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revelation of John On the other hand, if he be possessed of that special information which should qualify the inter preter for his office, another snare is waiting to trap him as we shall see. Study of Eastern religions and philosophies has revealed to many investigators that the pure, and noble, and uplifting, is not the sole property of Christianity. This discovery has some times resulted in a belittling of Jesus the Christ, whereas he is the chief cornerstone of that Temple of Truth into which many great and dedicated lives have been builded. This being so, let the qualified interpreter refrain from substituting for the name of Jesus Christ that of another, however exalted. If to such an interpreter the book of Revelation seem only a series of chapters taken from the initiatory rites of the Ancient Mysteries, it must be admitted that, for reasons to be explained presently, his ingenuity and special knowledge can make the book conform in a way to his theory, but it should be said that his meanings, however plausible, will be only secondary and, at a time like the present, his giving will be but a stone to those who cry for bread. Reve lation deals with world-happenings, in fact with the renovation of the human race and the earth itself, and not with that merely personal development for which the Mysteries existed, and which is only a type, the little likeness of the large. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revelation of St. John In answering the call for a third edition of these Lectures the author has thought it desirable to make a change in the mode of their publication. In former editions the Lectures were followed by several Appendices, treating of such important subjects as the Authorship of the Apocalypse, its Relation to the Fourth Gospel, its Date, and its Unity. These topics appeal to a narrower circle of readers than the Lectures themselves; while, at the same time, the growing rather than diminishing interest in the subjects discussed, together with the progress of inquiry, render it necessary that they should be treated anew, and the treatment brought down to the present hour. The author therefore now separates the Appendices from the Lectures; and, after having reconsidered them in the light of the most recent literature on the subject, he hopes to publish them in a volume of Discussions similar, at least in part, to that which was spoken of in the Preface to the first edition of this work. This volume will be prepared with as little delay as possible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Revelation In ordinary circumstances one who undertakes to comment upon a book of the New Testament may be justly expected to make every effort to explain each successive clause and each difficult expression of the book on which he writes. My aim in the following Commentary is rather to catch the general import and object of the Revelation of St. John considered as a whole. The latter purpose indeed cannot be attained unless the commentator has himself paid faithful attention to the former; but it is not necessary that the results of these inquiries should in every case be presented to the English reader. To him this book is for the most part a perplexity and enigma, and he would only be embarrassed by a multitude of details. It seemed well, therefore, to treat the book in its sections and paragraphs rather than verse by verse; and this is the course pursued in the following pages. The translation used is for the most part that of the Revised Version. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Revelation, or the Apocalypse of John The earliest writc's whose views haw come down to as, are Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Hippolytus, and Victorians, who lived and labored from fifty to one hundred years after the book had been written and its message received by its first readers. They all use -what is known as the Eschatological method, and all are strongly chiliastic in their interpretation, or, as we would say, they all stand firmly on the belief in the speedy return of Christ to defeat His enemies, set up His kingdom, and reign with His saints on the earth for a thousand years. In their writings, however, are found traces of a contemporary historical interpretation, by which they attempt to identify certain figures and references with persons and events of the author's own time. And again, there are to he found the beginnings of that tendency of the Alexandrian School to allegorize, a tendency which, as we shall see, held complete sway for more than eight hundred years. It succeeded in crowding out the Eschatological method as the opposition of the Empire to the Church died out and the Christian religion became more popular. Chiliasm then became a thing of the past, and Christ's reign of a thousand years was inter preted as simply a period in the history of the Church. To Tyconins it was that period between the first and second advents of Christ. The second was to take place three and a-half days, i.a 350 years after the first or about 350 ad. To meet scholars and teachers it meant a thousand years from either the birth or the death of Christ, and 'so intense and widespread was this belief that when the year onethousand approached great consternation prevailed and multitudes either gave or bequeathed all their possessions to the Church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revelation of John: An Interpretation of the Book With an Introduction and a Translation Although this volume is the result of study extending over many years it makes no claim to exhaustiveness; indeed it is only an interpretation, and that merely in outline, of the book. An accurate interpretation of every word and phrase of the book along historical lines is impossible in the present state of our knowledge, 'but enough is known to enable us to understand it in a general way, and this general knowledge is of very great practical value. For the reader's convenience, and because careful study show ed both the Authorized Version of 1611 and the Revised Ver sion. Of 1885 to be defective, it was found necessary to include a fresh translation of the book in this volume. A translation, as literal as possible, into clear, simple, modern English has been the aim. Although in many ways the book is a difficult one for the translator it is hoped some success has been obtained. The translation is inserted as Appendix I. In Appendix II will be found brief explanations of the very few technical terms and proper names used in the volume the explanation of which might be helpful to some readers. If the succeeding pages prove to be a help to the intelligent comprehension of the book the writer of them Will rejoice that his labour has not been in vain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Unfolding of the Ages in the Revelation of John This passage is quoted from Alford because the writer, while under profound Obligation to him for much valuable help, is nevertheless compelled Often to differ widely from him. This issue with him begins at the breaking of the first seal, where, instead of believing the victorious rider of the white horse to be the Lord Jesus as insisted on by Alford, the writer believes him to be antichrist. This, surely, is more in conformity with our Lord's prophecy. The white horse of the first seal is followed by war, pestilence, and death. These are, according to the Lord's prophecy, the beginning of sorrows which issue in a great tribulation after which the Son of Man is seen coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. This fact will be considered fully in its proper place. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
