This book introduces the reader to all the previous characters from her ten books. Barry, Grammy, Cheryl, Pam, Jodi, Sister Bridget, and Father David plan the 70th Anniversary Celebration Weekend to be held in May 2019. Some of the Middle School Students from St. John the Baptist Catholic Elementary also help the adults in the planning of this 70th Anniversary Celebration Weekend. It is a weekend that will be remembered by everyone who attended the school both past and present. I hope you all have enjoyed Peggy, The Three-Some Book 2, The Writer’s Corner Book 3, The Golden Nugget Book 4, Emily Book 5, This Is As Good As It Gets Book 6, The 1940 Diary Book 7, Pockets Book 8, Pam and Jodi’s Journey Book 9, The Journal Book 10 and The Reunion Book 11. This book has been written for my friends and family especially Angela, Bobbie, Aunt Edwina, Gwen, Jane, Jean, Kate, Peggy, Renee, Susan, Father Andy, Father Don, Sister Mary DeChantel, my parents Fred and Elizabeth, and all my classmates from NPHS the class of 1966. Special thanks goes to Miss Jean A. Houck, Fred, Lynne and Robert. You gave me the idea for the 70th Anniversary Celebration Weekend. It was fashioned after our 50th Class Reunion at NPHS for the Class of 1966. If any of you are wondering if I fashioned any of the characters after me, the answer is yes. There is a part of me in all the characters. A lot of the experiences in this book happened to my family and me, and in my various classrooms. This is an interactive book. I hope all of you learned something from it and enjoyed it as well.

Book excerpt: The book's primary character is William (Will) Farrell. The book begins with eleven-year-old William lusting after his friend Nick's sister, Sylphie McMillan. A bit later, William sheds a tear as he watches his precious Sylphie drive away with a sleek dude from California. Nick and Will play football together in high school. As an adult, Will reflects on how he meets his wife, lovely Lorna, after a silly accident on the ski slopes. Lorna's father doesn't care for Will, especially after Will gets drunk and rides a calf up and down both aisles of their church service. So the couple elope and birth two lovely daughters. After college, William rises to chief engineer at DataComp Inc., and Lorna rises as chief fashion designer at Fashions International. Lorna basks in in the glamor of the fashion world and local society while Will just takes pride in being a competent engineer and program manager. At one point, Will passes a golden new business opportunity to his well-trained business subordinate. Lorna hears of this "passing the buck" by her husband, and considering his lack of interest in rising in the world of society, she proposes that they separate as a first step to divorce and suggests that both of them feel free to date others. Finally, after Will wrestles (and deflates) the huge inflatable dragon at DataComp's entrance, Court, the company owner, tells Will to vanish for an indeterminate sabbatical. Will then heads off to Bermuda where he plays rugby, deep fishes, and reunites with Sylphie--who has changed her name to a movie actress named Margaret/Maggie Wainwright. The two of them love and battle through a tempestuous relationship before Maggie finally departs Will and Bermuda. Whilst in Bermuda, Will revives his old passion for painting and writing and struggles with a "Portrait of Lorna." Meanwhile, Lorna begins to tire of the social frenzy and begins to reflect on the many reasons why she had loved her separated hubby, William, for those many years. Realizing that she still loves him, she flies off to Bermuda. (Meanwhile, whilst on the beach, William finally manages to paint a magnificent painting of his first and only love, Lorna). At the end, Lorna scales down the rocks to a secluded beach and discovers William sound asleep in front of the "Portrait of Lorna." She quietly bends over and kisses William in his sleep. And they hug and kiss and unite in a solemn pact to stay together--forever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If This Porch Could Talk was written when Arlene was ninety-five years old and takes place in the 1990s--a kinder, gentler time, a golden era that we will never know again. Arlene relied on stories recorded in journals that she has kept for many years, providing a wealth of memories to draw from. Her story is centered around the historical background of her beloved hometown of Flint, Michigan. It is a tapestry of real life--sincere, heartfelt, a sweet, nostalgic story. It was 1995 when Arlene and her husband Jack purchased a home in Mott Park, Flint, Michigan, for a summer home. They embarked on a restoration project, refreshing the home. A Victorian porch was added across the front of the home, and many conversations took place on that porch. Some stories are humorous, others are sad. It celebrates memories of her family, days that she thought were ordinary. Looking back, they seem extraordinary. A great deal of Flint history is recorded. Some of the stories relate to things that are only memories such as Christmas shopping in Flint's magical downtown, dining at the Carriage Room on Smith-Bridgman's mezzanine, and the old farmers market. Other stories describe traditions that continue to this day--the Old Newsboys Sale, Applewood and the Sloan Summer Fair. Other historical topics touched on include the brick street in the downtown area, the metal arches proclaiming Flint as the Vehicle City, Glenwood Cemetery, and the Whaley House, among others. The flashbacks are interesting and beautifully written. Live again a thrilling performance of the Shrine Circus through Arlene's vivid description. You are there! Arlene has a way of painting a picture with words. You feel as though you are right beside her. If you enjoyed her debut book, Homemade Noodles & Cars, you're sure to treasure this one too. Her story is uplifting and leaves you with hope in your heart.

Book excerpt: From a New York Times best-selling author, an important and heartfelt exploration into the world of lost dogs and the power of reunion One in six dogs go missing at some point in their lives, leaving bereft owners to search high and low, hang missing posters, check shelters, and hope for good news. But amid these grim statistics, countless happy endings are forged. Tails wag again. Best friends are reunited. In Where the Lost Dogs Go, Susannah Charleson, author of Scent of the Missing and a trusted chronicler of the human/animal bond, dives headlong into the world of missing dogs. The mission to reunite lost pets with their families starts with Susannah's own shelter rescue, Ace, a plucky Maltese mix with a mysterious past who narrowly survived months wandering lost. While Susannah formally studies animal behavior, lost-pet search tactics, social media strategies, and the psychology of loss, Ace also steps up for training. Cheerful and resourceful, Ace has revealed a nose for the scent of lost pets, and together they help neighbors and strangers in their searching. In Where the Lost Dogs Go, readers take to the streets beside Susannah to bring home a host of missing pets. Along the way, Susannah finds a part of herself also lost. And when unexpected heartbreak shatters her own sense of direction, it is Ace--the shelter dog that started it all--who leads Susannah home. Inquisitive, instructive, heartrending, and hopeful, Where the Lost Dogs Go pays tribute to the missing dogs--and to the found--and to the restless space in between.

Book excerpt: Learn to communicate with your dog—using their language “Good reading for dog lovers and an immensely useful manual for dog owners.”—The Washington Post An Applied Animal Behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years’ experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell reveals a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs—sharing insights on how “man’s best friend” might interpret our behavior, as well as essential advice on how to interact with our four-legged friends in ways that bring out the best in them. After all, humans and dogs are two entirely different species, each shaped by its individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (as are wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. This marvelous guide demonstrates how even the slightest changes in our voices and in the ways we stand can help dogs understand what we want. Inside you will discover: • How you can get your dog to come when called by acting less like a primate and more like a dog • Why the advice to “get dominance” over your dog can cause problems • Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble—and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of mischief • How dogs and humans share personality types—and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alpha wanna-bes!” Fascinating, insightful, and compelling, The Other End of the Leash is a book that strives to help you connect with your dog in a completely new way—so as to enrich that most rewarding of relationships.

Book excerpt: Following church services, twelve-year-old Elisabeth Rose stands patiently in the reception line, waiting to ask the Reverend Van Dyke if animals go to heaven. "No, honey," he says dismissively, turning to shake hands with the man behind her. "Why not?" she persists. "Why, honey, they don't have souls." As every animal lover knows, the Reverend Van Dyke is terribly wrong. For the Love of a Dog charts one woman's journey into the joyous, complicated, and mysterious communion people can have with animals. From her first dog, a mischievous fox terrier named Patches, to the thuggish finch, Pavarotti, who rooms with her in grad school and the haughty horse, Shannon, whom she coaxes into docility, Elisabeth Rose's account reveals her special sensitivity to the inner voice of creatures and their particular needs. Most especially, For the Love of a Dog is the story of Rose's relationship to her border collie, Kierney, a "brooding poet" -- intelligent, exuberant, remarkably conversant, but also anxiety-ridden and difficult -- who is misdiagnosed as insane. Told with power and deep insight, Rose chronicles the life of this extraordinary dog in a narrative infused with keen perceptions on fable and myth, spirituality, and the ways in which consciousness and language interact. Ultimately, Rose's fascination with the emotional and spiritual lives of her animal companions leads her to the answer to her own question. "If the soul flickers somewhere in our bodies like a wispy genie," Rose writes, "maybe it's in our brain stem, our medulla oblongata, our animal brain."
