Book excerpt: Over the last half century, Yelloweye Rockfish Sebastes ruberrimus have experienced dramatic declines along the West Coast of the United States and British Columbia. Efforts have been made throughout the species’ range to rebuild and sustainably manage stocks, including the introduction of a Statewide Rockfish Initiative by the State of Alaska, which intends to develop management strategies for Yelloweye Rockfish in the Gulf of Alaska. To support this effort and address information gaps in Yelloweye Rockfish reproductive biology throughout their range, I estimated important reproductive parameters and life history information for Yelloweye Rockfish in Prince William Sound and the Northern Gulf of Alaska, Alaska, that included maturity, parturition timing, skip spawning, and fecundity relationships. I identified that ages-at-50% maturity (A50) for males and females were similar (A50 = 15 years and A50 = 16, respectively), but males reached full maturity (A95) earlier than females (male A95 = 19 years and female A95 = 31 years). Female Yelloweye Rockfish fork length-at-50% and 95% maturity (L50 and L95) was greater in the Northern Gulf of Alaska (L50 = 46.7 cm and L95 = 55.8 cm) than in Prince William Sound (L50 = 41.1 cm and L95 = 50.2 cm). Similarly, male L50 and L95 was greater in the Northern Gulf of Alaska (L50 = 44.0 cm and L95 = 49.2 cm) relative to Prince William Sound (L50 = 40.8 cm and L95 = 46.0 cm), and males matured at a smaller size than females. Female L50 was consistent with data from southern populations, but A50 was younger than predicted based on a latitudinal trend, indicating that Yelloweye Rockfish in this region may experience greater than expected growth rates. Yelloweye Rockfish underwent parturition between May and August and peaked in June and July, and parturition timing was earlier for larger and older females. I documented that female Yelloweye Rockfish skip-spawned at a rate of 9.8%. Skip spawning rate was associated with fork length and peaked at sizes between 40.2 cm and 52.3 cm; the peak in stock reproductive potential is shifted toward larger females in response to skip spawning. I conducted egg and larvae counting in an image-analysis software, which was more than four times faster than manual counting and was equally accurate and precise. Yelloweye Rockfish fecundity scaled hyperallometrically with FL and relative fecundity increased with length, indicating that spawning stock biomass may not be proportional to total egg production. Combining these results, I found that ignoring the hyperallometric fecundity relationship and skip spawning could overestimate reproductive potential by as much as 66% and 45% for Prince William Sound and the Northern Gulf of Alaska, respectively. The results of this study will improve the estimates of stock-recruitment dynamics and can be readily integrated into a stock assessment that will guide the sustainable management of Yelloweye Rockfish in Prince William Sound and the Northern Gulf of Alaska.

Combining harvest and composition estimates will permit estimation of total harvest of each species in the CFMU.

Book excerpt: Atmospheric testing of thermonuclear devices during the 1950s and 1960s created a global radiocarbon (14C) signal in the environment that has provided a useful tracer and chronological marker in oceanic systems and organisms. The bomb-generated 14C signal retained in fish otoliths can be used as a permanent, time-specific recorder of the 14C present in ambient seawater, making it a useful tool in age validation of fishes. The goal of this study was to determine 14C levels in otoliths of the age-validated yelloweye rockfish (Sebastes ruberrimus) to establish a reference time series for the coastal waters of southeast Alaska. Radiocarbon values from the first year's growth of 43 yelloweye rockfish otoliths were plotted against estimated birth year to produce a 14C time series for these waters spanning 1940 to 1990. The time series shows the initial rise of bomb 14C occurred in 1958 in coastal southeast Alaskan waters and 14C levels rose relatively rapidly to peak [Delta]14C values (60-70%) between 1966 and 1971, with a subsequent declining trend through the end of the record in 1990 ( -3.2%). In addition, the radiocarbon data, independent of the radiometric study, confirms the longevity of the yelloweye rockfish up to a minimum of 44 years and strongly supports higher age estimates. The yelloweye rockfish record provides a 14C chronology that will be useful for the interpretation of 14C accreted in biological samples from these waters and in future rockfish age validation studies.

Previous studies have presented schemes on the reproductive biology of a single targeted species of the genus Sebastes, but all appear to possess a similar reproductive biology as evidenced by this and other studies. This atlas stages major events during spermatogenesis, oogenesis, and embryogenesis, including atresia, in six species of Sebastes (S. alutus, S. elongatus, S. helvomaculatus, S. polyspinis, S. proriger, and S. zacentrus). Our study suggests that the male reproductive cycle of Sebastes is characterized by 11 phases of testicular development, with 10 stages of sperm development and 1 stage of spermatozoa atresia. Ovarian development was divided into 12 phases, with 10 stages of oocyte development, 1 stage of embryonic development, and 1 stage of oocyte atresia. Embryonic development up to parturition was divided into 33 stages following the research of Yamada and Kusakari (1991). Reproductive development of all six species examined followed the developmental classifications listed above which may apply to all species of Sebastes regardless of the number of broods produced annually. Multiple brooders vary in that not all ova are fertilized and progress to embryos; a proportion of ova are arrested at the pre-vitellogenic stage. Reproductive stage examples shown in this atlas use S. elongatus for spermatic development, S. proriger for oocyte development, and S. alutus for embryological development, because opportunistic sampling only permitted complete analysis of each respective developmental phase for those species. The results of this study and the proposed reproductive phases complement the recommended scheme submitted by Brown-Peterson et al. (2011), who call for a standardization of terminology for describing reproductive development of fishes.

Book excerpt: Ecosystem-based fishery management (EBFM) entails treating resource allocation and management as elements of a comprehensive framework that accounts for ecological linkages. The goal of EBFM is to maintain ecosystem resiliency in a manner that provides for the services desired e.g., fishery catch, species abundance, economic viability. Historically fisheries have been managed on a per species basis with a general focus on increasing or decreasing harvest rates. This management strategy often excludes meaningful processes such as interactions with other species, environmental changes, and economic effects of management changes. One feasible path for implementation of EBFM is through enhancement of existing single-species fishery management models. Contemporary age-structured stock assessment models generally use an estimate of spawning stock biomass (SSB), i.e., the biomass of female spawning fish, to approximate stock reproductive potential (RP). This approximation inherently assumes a proportional relationship between SSB and RP. Maturity at age or at length is a key aspect of reproductive biology that is central to estimating both RP and SSB. As a sequential augmentation to a single species management model the relationships among body condition, population abundance, the probability of being mature, relative fecundity, and environmental correlates were examined for female walleye pollock Gadus chalcogrammus in the Gulf of Alaska. Maturity data were corrected for spatial sampling bias using a mixed-effects generalized additive model. Once corrected for spatial bias, relationships between maturity, ocean temperature, body condition, ocean productivity (in the form of chlrophyll-a), and population abundance were explored. Estimates of fecundity were updated through the processing of archived samples and were also examined with mixed-effects generalized additive models to explore relationships between the previously listed covariates. Multiple measures of RP were examined to explore differences between methods currently incorporated into the stock assessment and updated measures of total egg production and time varying maturity. Walleye pollock body condition is density-dependent, declining with population abundance. However, after accounting for the effects of length, age, location, year, chlorophyll-a concentrations, summer ocean temperature and sample haul, condition has a positive effect on the probability of a fish being mature. Similarly, condition has a positive effect on relative fecundity, after accounting for length, age, egg diameter, chlorophyll-a concentrations, winter ocean temperature and sample haul. A positive relationship is observed between depth-integrated summer ocean temperature and maturity and depth-integrated winter ocean temperature and fecundity. Chlorophyll-a concentrations have a dome shaped relationship with maturity, peaking at 2.3 mg/m−3, and a negative relationship with fecundity. Variations in body condition have a direct influence on the estimated RP of the fish stock through both differences in the maturation schedule and total egg production. Over some periods these updated estimates of RP differ from estimates of female SSB from the annual stock assessment. Alternative estimates of annual RP, particularly total egg production, may provide better estimates of annual reproductive output than spawning stock biomass. In addition, relationships to density-dependent and density-independent factors provide informative predictions that can be incorporated into stock assessment analyses. Inclusion of spatially explicit information for walleye pollock maturity has implications for understanding stock reproductive biology and thus the setting of sustainable harvest rates used to manage this valuable fishery. Additionally, because management decisions have economic as well as biological consequences a suite of management strategies were simulated to examine the economic viability of a proposed small-vessel walleye pollock fishery in Alaska state waters in the Gulf of Alaska. As a case-study for straddling stocks, an agent-based model was developed to examine a suite of available federal and state management strategies as they relate to the economic viability of a nascent Alaska state-waters trawl fishery for walleye pollock that may develop after a long history of parallel state and federal waters management. Results of alternative strategies were compared in terms of indicators, such as variance of catch and quasi-rent value. Given the input characteristics of these simulations, the management strategy that produces the best overall improvements relative to status quo involved a federal-waters management strategy that allows for community-based cooperatives and an open access strategy in state-waters. Agent-based models may be used to inform managers of the underlying dynamics of catches and revenues in order to avoid unintended consequences of management decisions and to improve the likelihood of attaining fishery management objectives. This dissertation provides incremental additions to our knowledge of walleye pollock reproductive biology its spatial and temporal dynamics, and environmental correlates that may serve as ecological indices. These indices, coupled with an improved understanding of the socio-economic examinations of fishery management changes through agent-based modeling, may assist in producing more holistic management strategies, such as EBFM.

Book excerpt: This study will document the unassisted submergence success of 5 rockfish species (Sebastes spp.) in Prince William Sound, Alaska following capture by hook and line. The capture depth, temperature difference between capture depth and surface, and 6 external signs of barotrauma will be documented for all 5 species. Deepwater release methods have proven successful in increasing the probability of survival of fish exhibiting symptoms of barotrauma; however, the ability to submerge unassisted has not been assessed in many rockfish species. These 5 species are commonly caught and released in Prince William Sound, often at the surface. Regulations requiring the deepwater release of all rockfish in Prince William Sound will become effective in 2020, so it is necessary to determine which and what proportions of commonly caught rockfish are able to submerge unassisted.
